My thanks to Gérard Demuydt, Ole Valaker, Laszlo Nagy, Petar Stajic, John Saunders, Andrea Malfagia, David Clayton, Steve Giddins and everyone else who helped with the issue.
Nigel Short took clear first place in the European Union Individual Championships after he was the only winner amongst the leaders going into the final round. This week sees the start of the Vladimir Kramnik against Veselin Topalov match which will produce a definitive single world champion in chess for the first time since 1993. Veselin Topalov is world number one and Vladimir Kramnik's form has returned after a period of illness, its very tough to predict a winner. Should be an exciting contest.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The first weekend of the 4NCL took place in Sunningdale, England 16th-17th September 2006. Defending champions Wood Green lost both their opening matches after losing their sponsorship. Favourites this year look like being Guildford ADC with a challenge from Hilsmark Kingfisher and Slough Sharks. [See http://www.4ncl.co.uk/giddins01.htm and http://www.4ncl.co.uk/giddins02.htm for Steve Giddins' rounds 1-2 reports.]

The Corus Website has a commentary column by Gert Ligterink in Dutch which comments on the Grand Slam Association. It doesn't seem as advanced as some of the reports from Spain suggested last week.
http://www.coruschess.com/article.php?s=c94 A Babel fish translation gives this as the final para: "Provisionally I wait. Corus-toernooidirecteur Jeroen van den Berg mount insured that definite appointments still no me have been made. The committee stands plan kind compared with the Grand Slam, but it is on its hoede. It will never permit that it is fiddled to the autonomy of the tournament. I had not differently expected."

Asked how he estimates his chances, Kramnik reacted cautiously: "Fritz examines millions of moves per second. It is extraordinarily difficult to play against such a calculating monster. Right from the start you are walking on a very narrow ridge, and you know that any inattentiveness will be your downfall. It is a scientific experiment and I will have to fight very hard for my chance."
