My thanks to Adolivio Capece, Alex Relyea, Zsuzsa Veroci, Juan Minaya, Bill Townsend, Thomas Henrich, Fritz Skopetz, David Clayton, Boris Alterman, Miklos Orso, Greg Shahade, Ivo Knezovic, Igor-Alexander Nataf, George Mirijanian, Frank Berry, Doug Bake, Stewart Reuben, Steve Giddins and everyone else who helped with the issue.
The World Blitz Championships proved to be an exciting and close event. Alexander Grischuk managed to beat Peter Svidler who must be disappointed not to hold the position he had which was all he needed to take the title. Interestingly the organisers managed to record all but half a game given that many recent rapid events have lost a lot of the games. Nigel Short is playing his first international tournament in mainland UK since Hastings 1989 and he shares the lead with 5/6 in the European Union Championships. The Russian First League which was a qualifier for the Russian Championship Superfinal at the end of the year proved to be an exciting event. Rather nicely they provided PGN for the event for most of the event after I mentioned it. I'm really looking forward to the final. There was a huge amount of chess this week which rather caught me offguard.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The World Blitz Championship final took place on 7th September 2006 in Rishon Le Zion (Israel). This was a Round Robin Tournament with 16 players. Alexander Grischuk won a final armageddon playoff game (he had white but had to win) against Peter Svidler to take the title after they tied during the all-play-all phase. My thanks to the organisers for the file of games (only one partial game missing which is a great job for blitz).

The 59th Russian Championship 1st League took place in Tomsk 3rd-11th September 2006. Ernesto Inarkiev won the event with 6.5/9. There were 7 qualification places for the Russian Championships super-final at the end of the year. There were seven players tied for six places and it appears that Nikita Vitiugov edged out Evgeniy Najer on a second Progessive score tie-break after they tied the first.
Swiss system, 9 rounds with time control 1 hour 40 minutes on the firsts 40 moves, then 50 minutes on the next 20 moves and 10 minutes till the end of the game with an increment of 30 seconds per move. The prize fund was $100 000. In the end the coverage was very good with PGN available at the ends of rounds.

France and China played for the Trophée MULTICOMS in Paris 4th-9th September 2006. This is a Scheveningen match with 6 men and 3 women in the teams. There are 20 000 Euros in prizes for the men's section. France edged out China 20-16 in the main men's event. The women's part was a complete mismatch in terms of ELO ratings in favour of the Chinese and so it proved in reality finishing 12.5-5.5. This left the final over all result as China 28.5 France 25.5. [Round 5 has about half the games missing and Wang Yue - Sokolov (6) is incomplete]

The 128th New York State Championship was held in Albany, NY from Sept. 1 to 4, 2006. Nearly 200 players competed in the four sections, showing a dramatic improvement over turnouts in recent years.
The Open section was won by GMs Ildar Ibragimov and Joel Benjamin, who both scored 5 1/2-1/2. The event's highest rated players by a significant amount, the two drew each other in round five and handily beat all their other opponents. FM James Critelli was clear third with 5-1.
Since none of the above-named players are current New York State residents, the new state champion was chosen from among those tied for fourth with 4 1/2 - 1/2: FM Teddy Coleman, WFM Iryna Zenyuk and NM Mark Kurtzman. Coleman was declared state champion on tiebreaks, seeing as his only loss was to GM Benjamin and he beat two International Masters.
It was strange to have GM Joel Benjamin win the tournament and not be state titleholder since he is a nine-time former champion (a record!), but he now makes his home in New Jersey.
Tied for seventh with 4-2 were: IM Jay Bonin, FM Igor Nikolayev, IM Marlo Micayabas, and Matt Parry. Eleven players tied for eleventh with 3 1/2 - 2 1/2: Max Enkin, Craig LaSalle, Richard Tuhrim, Lonnie Kwartler, Daryll Weatherly, Benjamin Katz, Matthew Gregory, Peter Michelman, Dikran Karagueuzian, Mitchell Fitzko and Steven Owen.
The New York State championship is the longest running annual tournament in the U.S., and possibly the world, having started in 1878 and been held almost every year since then. Previous titleholders include: Frank Marshall, Carlos Torre, Reuben Fine, Arnold Denker, John Collins and Larry Evans. More recent champions include: Roman Dzindzichashvili, Michael Rohde, Robert Byrne, Joel Benjamin, Hikaru Nakamura and Gata Kamsky. There are also two World Champions on the lengthy list of winners: Jose Capablanca was champion in 1910, and 5th World Correspondence Champion Hans Berliner was winner in 1953.
The event was directed by Steve Immitt and Bill and Brenda Goichberg. Full crosstables for the event are posted at the Continental Chess website, the exact address is: http://www.chesstour.com/nysc06r.htm

There are stories coming out of Spain that MTel, Linares, and Corus along with Bilbao have come to an agreement about producing a series of major Grand Slam events. News is too scant to comment in detail. Hopefully there will be a press release this week but there are one or two signs that things may not be straightforward. They are talking about the top 4 players in the world having to play all four events and revisiting some aspect of broadcast rights.

It is a scientific experiment and I will have to fight very hard for my chance."
