1) Introduction

My thanks to Allan Herbert, Miklos Orso, Mikhail Golubev, Ching Kim Lye, Toni Ayza, Gary Suffield, Nigel Freeman, Tarjei J. Svensen, Giannis Antoniadis, Greg Shahade, Albert Muratet, Dr. Bognár Csaba, Lou Caruana, Svein Jonny Albrigtsen, Petr Pisk, Wantiez Fabrice, Alain Talon and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Another interesting week of chess. Peter Leko beat Anatoly Karpov in a close rapid match 4.5-3.5, the match was decided by a big error from Karpov in game three and Karpov did make a fine save on the final day but it can't be said that the match caught fire. Peter Svidler beat Magnus Carlsen with a very creative sacrifice to win their two games match also this week. Carlsen has been busy and he was finishing off the NH Hotels Scheveningen tournament in Amsterdam topping the standings of the Rising Stars and qualifying for the lucrative Amber Blindfold and Rapid tournament next year. Vassily Ivanchuk also dominated a rapid event this week winning one held on a cruise ship travelling between Odessa-Istandbul and back to Odessa. Finally the very strong 59th Russian Championship 1st League has just started in Tomsk, it will qualify players for the important super final at the end of the year. It is just one of a number of events in a worrying trend using game viewers and not publishing the games in PGN or indeed any usable electronic format, I'm not sure of the motivation in this case, sometimes it must be ignorance but I think in many cases its a definite attempt to stop the games being distributed.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Leko - Karpov Match

Peter Leko and Anatoly Karpov played an 8 game rapid match in Miskolc 30th August - 3rd September 2006. Two games per day at 16:00 and 17:30 local time. Time control was 25 mins + 5 seconds a move. Peter Leko won the match 4.5-3.5 courtesy of a terrible blunder at the end of game 3 from Karpov in an otherwise pretty sterile match.

4) NK Hoteles Chess Tournament

The NH Chess Tournament took place August 19th-29th at the NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky. It was organized by the hotel chain NH Hotels in close cooperation with the Association Max Euwe from Monaco. The Scheveningen team tournament was a battle between a team of 'Experience' and a team of 'Rising Stars'. The 'old hands' were Andersson, Beliavsky, Jussupov, Ljubojevic and Nunn, while the 'Youngsters' were Carlsen, Karjakin, Stellwagen, Smeets and Wang Hao. As it turned out all the Rising Stars performed above their rating apart from Karjakin who lost a few points and they won the battle 28-22. Alexander Beliavsky is still an active competetor on the world scene and he scored excellently. Most of the rest don't compete that much these days and John Nunn (See interview at: http://www.doggers-schaak.nl/) in fact went as far as to announce his retirement a few years ago and in the end the 6 point gap was to be expected (and indeed spot on predicted by Mystic Mig). Magnus Carlsen will be invited to next year's Amber Rapid and Blindfold Tournament in Monaco after finishing as the Rising Star's top scorer.

6) Chess Cruise Tournament

A rapid tournament with a time control 15 minutes per game took part on the ship Yuzhnaya Palmyra during the cruise Odessa-Istanbul-Odessa (28th August - 2nd September 2006). As it happened, the tournament was dominated by the Ukrainian grandmasters. Being an indisputable rating favourite, Vassily Ivanchuk of Lviv ensured the victory only in the very last round, beating his main rival Viacheslav Eingorn. In the case of an Eingorn win in that game, the Odessite would have taken the first place due to the better tiebreak. Third place was occupied by the youngest grandmaster of Odessa, Yuri Drozdovskij. A special prize for the best result among women was taken by the leader of the Ukrainian women's team Natalia Zhukova, who also lives in Odessa.

IM Anatoly Bykovsky of Russia acted as a chief arbiter and GM Genna Sosonko of the Netherlands headed the Appealing Committee. "The First International Odessa Chess Cruise" was a part of celebration of the annual town's day in Odessa (September 2nd) and was supported partly by the town and partly by the corporate sponsors: Bank Pivdenny, Optima Telecom, Suncoin Invest and Farlep.

Some games were reconstructed by participants after the event end. Among these scores, a few (especially, Lerner vs Ivanchuk game) are incomplete. Detailed information in Russian language about the event can be found at the new Odessa chess website, Shahmatnyi Kruiz: http://www.chessportal.od.ua. It is hoped that in the future similar competitions will be organised again. (Report by M.Golubev.)

7) Russian Championship 1st League

The 59th Russian Championship 1st League takes place in Tomsk 3rd-11th September 2006. 7 players qualify for the Russian Championships super-final at the end of the year. Swiss system, 9 rounds with time control 1 hour 40 minutes on the firsts 40 moves, then 50 minutes on the next 20 moves and 10 minutes till the end of the game with an incrimation of 30 seconds per move from the first one. The prize fund is $100 000. The participants, who take the first 7 places, qualify for the superfinal of the Championship of Russia 2006. One round 2 results is missing. There is plenty of coverage but none in PGN. I may have to type in the round one games as they are hidden in yet another proprietary format of which there are far too many on the internet these days.

20) Banyoles International Chess Festival

The Banyoles International Chess Festival took place 16th-25th August 2005. It started with the 2nd Lluis Muratet Rapid on August 16th which was won by Sergey Fedorchuk with 8/9. Then there was an eight day open won on tie-break by Viktor Korchnoi on tie-break from a group of 6 players on 7/9. Korchnoi received two half point byes to allow him to play in the Lichthof Chess Champions Day reported above. My thanks to Albert Muratet who sent the report below and many more games this week.

Albert Muratet reports: The "Banyoles Chess Festival 2006" took place in the nice and quiet town of Banyoles 16th-24th August 2006. It was, without doubt, a great event, with a large international participation (the largest foreign participation in the whole of Catalonia and possibly Spain, too) in the two tournaments of the Festival including 19 grandmasters and 30 International masters. Heading the ranking was Viktor Korchnoi (Switzerland) who challenged for the World Chess Championship twice and the presence of Sergei Tiviakov (Netherlands) as top seed with a rating of 2668 Elo.

In the Lluis Muratet Memorial there were 12 grandmasters (10 men and 2 women) and 17 International Masters and in "Ciutat de Banyoles" there were 7 Grandmasters (5 men and 2 women) and 16 International Masters and more than 10 Fide Masters.

The amount of participants were considerable, with more than 150 registered players inside the Memorial Lluis Muratet, with 80 foreigner players from 23 different countries, and more than 220 players in the tournament « Ciutat de Banyoles » with 92 foreigner players from 17 different countries, becoming the Chess Festival with more foreigner participation: 172 players.

The Chess Festival 2006 had different activities, where the most important were the two international tournaments: The Memorial Lluis Muratet, rapid-chess (20 minutes for game) which was his second edition and the International Chess Tournament "Ciutat de Banyoles" which was in its ninth edition.

The whole Festival was showed live on the Internet, throught the website of Banyoles Chess Club (www.escacsbanyoles.com), and not only the evolution of the two first boards could be followed. With a webcam, the images in direct of the players, with special attention to the games of Viktor Korchnoi, it meant that all the world could see the retransmission of the Tournament. The 16th of august was held, in the venue of Mirallac Hotel, close to the Lake of Banyoles, the second Memorial Lluis Muratet, with, as we said yet, the participation of 120 players.

In the third round, the French FIDE Master, Nicolas Coursaget beat the number one of the ranking, Sergei Tiviakov. In the fifth round, Viktor Korchnoi drew with the Swedish grandmaster Slavko Cicak and then WGM Ana Matnadze (Georgia) and IM Omar Almeida (Cuba) headed the standings in the sixth round. The victory of Almeida over Matnadze meant that Almeida ahead alone. But then in the seventh round, Almeida drew with Korchnoi and Fedorchuk beat Tiviakov, and Fedorchuk tied with Almeida ahead the classification with 6,5 points, followed by Viktor Moskalenko, Viktor Korchnoi, Ana Matnadze and Vladimir Epishin. Among them will be the podium of the Tournament. In the 8th round, victory for Fedorchuk over Almeida, and the victory of Epishin and the draw between Korchnoi and Moskalenko, meant that Fedorchuk was alone in first place with one round to go. In the last round, Fedorchuk drew with Epishin (who had won all the games except the first round where he lost because he arrived to late at the game). The draw in the board number one (Fedorchuk-Epishin) decided the Tournament in favour of Fedorchuk. In the second board, Vadim Malakhatko with 6,5 won this compatriot Viktor Moskalenko (Ukraine), while on the third board, Sergei Tiviakov beat Viktor Korchnoi. The final standings of Memorial Lluis Muratet was:

On the 17th of august started the 9th Open Ciutat de Banyoles, which was more disputed yet. The main favourites, among, Viktor Korchnoi that in the middle of the Tournament must go to travel to Zurich to play against Gary Kasparov in the celebration of 150th Anniversary of Credit Suisse in a quadrangular with Gary Kasparov, Anatoly Karpov, Viktor Korchnoi (the three big Ks) and Judith Polgar, and he must come back to Banyoles to play the last rounds and finishing the Tournament.

The 9th Open Ciutat de Banyoles is divided in two sections. Inside the first, the A group, there were a total of 133 players, where 62 were foreigner players, and with the participation of 5 grandmasters, 2 women grandmasters, 14 international masters and 9 Fide masters.

In the B group (rating below 2000) there were 92 participants, where 30 were foreign players and 25 players had Fide rating, so more than 30% of the players had Fide rating. It meant B group was very attractive to get a Fide rating.

The 9th Open International Ciutat de Banyoles was more disputed than the rapid chess 2nd Memorial Lluis Muratet, after that in the 3rd. round, the draw between Viktor Korchnoi against Nicolas Giffard and the draw of Sergei Tiviakov against the WGM Ana Matnadze from Georgia, meant that the GM Viktor Moskalenko and the GM Slavko Cicak led the tournament, tied with IM Yury Lapshun (from USA) and FM Jordi Cuadras (from Spain). The victories of the Grandmasters in the next round meant they were joint leaders, and the draw between them in the 5th round, meant at the start of the 6th round, there were 8 players are tied with 5 points: GM Tiviakov, IM Almeida, GM Korchnoi, IM Lapshun, IM Giffard, GM Moskalenko, GM Cicak and WGM Matnadze. Of them, only Tiviakov won in the 7th round and with 6 points he was the leader. In the 8th round, the repetition of the match up of the tournament: Viktor Korchnoi against Sergei Tiviakov, this time Korchnoi had white, and his win meant that, with the same points of GM Tiger Hillarp Persson, he was in joint first place, and, in the board number one in the last round with all the emotion of the tournament played Hillarp-Korchnoi, followed them for the other players to half point. The draw in this first board meant the equality with 6 players and after the tiebreak, Viktor Korchnoi was the winner of the Tournament.

Kramnik - Deep Fritz

Vladimir Kramnik will play the ChessBase computer program Deep Fritz in a 6 game match 25th November - 5th December 2006 in the German’s Art and Exhibition Hall in Bonne. Kramnik stands to win a prize of $1 Million US for a win in the match doubling his starting fee.

Asked how he estimates his chances, Kramnik reacted cautiously: "Fritz examines millions of moves per second. It is extraordinarily difficult to play against such a calculating monster. Right from the start you are walking on a very narrow ridge, and you know that any inattentiveness will be your downfall. It is a scientific experiment and I will have to fight very hard for my chance."

The WCC is being organized by Universal Event Promotion (UEP), in cooperation with the Art and Exhibition Hall.

Schedule: Game 1: Saturday 25.11.2006 16h Game 2: Monday 27.11.2006 16h Game 3: Wednesday 29.11.2006 16h Game 4: Friday 01.12.2006 16h Game 5: Sunday 03.12.2006 16h Game 6: Tuesday 05.12.2006 16h
