A fantastic week's chess. Viswanathan Anand has been the king of the Frankfurt and now Mainz Chess Classic for years. He had a hard time holding off his challenger Teimour Radjabov this year however. But in the end his experience counted and he won the last two games to take the match 5-3. The Association Max Euwe always seems to put together interesting tournaments. In addition to the annunal Amber tournament and the one off Polugaevsky Sicilian tournament they've now come up with the NH Hotels tournament pitting rising stars against experienced (not to mention almost retired in some cases) players. I personally was expecting the rising stars to win quite convincingly but at the moment the teams are inseparable at 7.5 each after three rounds. A really interesting tournament.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The Chess Classic Mainz took place 15th-20th August 2006. Viswanathan Anand beat Teimour Radjabov 5-3 in the annual rapid match (17th-20th 8 game match). Peter Svidler was defeated by Levon Aronian in chess960 again this was settled by two wins on the final day. Rustam Kasimdzhanov won the 13th Ordix Open. I give the chess960 match at the end of the file, because the castling is unusual I've had to split the games at the point it takes place.

The NH Chess Tournament takes place August 19th-29th at the NH Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky. It's organized by the hotel chain NH Hotels in close cooperation with the Association Max Euwe from Monaco. It's a Scheveningen team tournament between a team of 'Experience' and a team of 'Rising Stars'. The 'old hands' are Andersson, Beliavsky, Jussupov, Ljubojevic and Nunn, while the 'Youngsters' are Carlsen, Karjakin, Stellwagen, Smeets and Wang Hao. Obviously the first question is which team will win, but there are several 'individual' prizes as well, the most interesting being the one for the youngster with the best score (provided it's a positive score): he'll be invited to next year's Amber Rapid and Blindfold Tournament in Monaco.
Another novelty is that apart from the usual live transmission of the games there will be streaming video coverage from the tournament hall so that the Internet audience can follow the entire action.

The Swiss Chess Tour Davos Festival 2006 with Viktor Korchnoi playing the first time in individual senior championship which was won by Borislav Ivkov. The 5th Davos Open was won by Petar Benkovic.
Sinisa Joksic reports: 73 year old Borislav Ivkov won the 6th European Championship for seniors. 55 years ago, GM from Belgrade of Serbia, had been winner of the 1st Junior World Championship (Birmingen 1951). The European Championship took place in Davos (Switzerland) from 4th-13th August 2006 in Congress Center, attractive four stars hotel Sun Star Park Hotel, placed on the top of the hill, less than 100 meters from the very center of Davos, where, mostly players got settled. Ivkov made Bobby Fischers score 8 points out of 9 games. He really played very good and was not so far to made perfect score. The only defeat occurred against Viktor Korchnoi in a time scramble, missing chances to win the game several times. On his route to victory he won against Jansa, Cebalo and Tseitlin, after the last round he was a full point ahead the Tseitlin and Jansa, holders of silver and bronze medals.
GM Jansa commented on Ivkov's play: You better then 40 years ago. Mark Tseitlin (63), last year's winner beat the top seed of the championship, Viktor Korchnoi in the last round to take second place. Viktor Korchnoi (76) played too sharply and riskily, to escape drawish variations prepared by more and less all his opponents. Korchnoi lost to Jansa in a much better position and to Tseitlin, this time after poor play. Viktor Korchnoi one the best players in chess never conquer a world or European title. During his junior or younger period no appropriate championships existed.
The women's championship and golden medal won Valeria Dotan (ISR), silver Aleksandra Shestoperova (RUS) and bronze Tatyana Fomina.(EST). Davos Open won IM Petar Benkovic (SCG), second IM Bjorn Tiller (NOR) and third Cesar Martin Luis (ESP). The organisation was very good. FIDE persistently (stubbornly) rejects the idea of giving GM title to the winner of European Championship, who dont have it. In the meantime gives them to the juniors and even under 18. Unlucky that proposal does not carry the support of the ECU either. Carry out what will be if all continent federation asks GM title for their senior champions. Forget that proposed content the condition of minimum 100 players and 5 GM. Anyhow some of juniors with GM title give up chess

Vladimir Kramnik will play the ChessBase computer program Deep Fritz in a 6 game match 25th November - 5th December 2006 in the Germans Art and Exhibition Hall in Bonne. Kramnik stands to win a prize of $1 Million US for a win in the match doubling his starting fee.
Asked how he estimates his chances, Kramnik reacted cautiously: "Fritz examines millions of moves per second. It is extraordinarily difficult to play against such a calculating monster. Right from the start you are walking on a very narrow ridge, and you know that any inattentiveness will be your downfall. It is a scientific experiment and I will have to fight very hard for my chance."
The WCC is being organized by Universal Event Promotion (UEP), in cooperation with the Art and Exhibition Hall.
Schedule: Game 1: Saturday 25.11.2006 16h Game 2: Monday 27.11.2006 16h Game 3: Wednesday 29.11.2006 16h Game 4: Friday 01.12.2006 16h Game 5: Sunday 03.12.2006 16h Game 6: Tuesday 05.12.2006 16h
During the entire period of the match the Art and Exhibition Hall will offer a varied program.

If you've won a game that's appeared in Chessbase Megabase 2005 then find out a series of results which by separation means you beat Garry Kasparov! Fun stuff from Karlheinz Zoechling. I'm not in Megabase but have beaten someone who has a separation of two, giving me a separation of three!

It is a scientific experiment and I will have to fight very hard for my chance." The WCC is being organized by Universal Event Promotion (UEP), in cooperation with the Art and Exhibition Hall.
Schedule: Game 1: Saturday 25.11.2006 16h Game 2: Monday 27.11.2006 16h Game 3: Wednesday 29.11.2006 16h Game 4: Friday 01.12.2006 16h Game 5: Sunday 03.12.2006 16h Game 6: Tuesday 05.12.2006 16h During the entire period of the match the Art and Exhibition Hall will offer a varied program.
