My thanks to Remco Hekhuis, Barth Plomp, Miklos Orso, Serge Archambault, Gary Suffield, Michael McDowell, Willem-Jan Pannekoek, Tarjei J. Svensen, Roberto Alvarez, Hans Groffen, Maxim Devereaux, Roger Scowen, Ali Nihat Yazici, George Mirijanian, Jan Mazuch, Natalia Khamidova and everyone else who helped with the issue.
Another busy week of chess. Vladimir Kramnik played his final event before his match against Veselin Topalov in September. He rather amazingly won the Dortmund tournament after drawing his first five games by winning his last two games against Baadur Jobava and Peter Leko. Whilst he never looked particularly impressive he won despite admitting that he wouldn't be using any of his novelties. Its obvious he's in his best shape for at least 18 months but whether he's in the form to beat Topalov remains to be seen. The Biel tournament was much livelier as you might expect with the field they assembled. Alexander Morozevich has won the Biel event every time he has played and this year was no exception. He lost two games to Magnus Carlsen and drew quickly to finish the event off against Teimour Radjabov but amazingly won all the remaining games. Carlsen shared second with Radjabov. Carlsen has played a lot of chess over the summer, and has clearly jumped up in class again. Probably its time to cut down again and do some more studying in time for the Corus tournament in Wijk aan Zee where its entirely possible to imagine him kicking on to another level again.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The 15th Kavala Open takes place 4th-11th August 2006. There is one (traditional) Open Tournament, which is at the same time the Greek Championships. This year they decided to form two groups with very low elo players competing separately, so as not to create great elo differences and discourage high-ranked players from participating (and being paired with a 1400 player, when a game loss, or draw might mean an "elo catastrophy") on a swiss tournament such as this one. This separation of low elos and the bigger ones is done for the first time in Greece, previously all competed in one tournament. The 1st group players will be eligible for Greek Open titles in men's and women's competitions.

Bobby Fischer has got into a dispute with the Union Bank of Switzerland who cancelled his account. The most interesting thing about the story is that it seems confirm Fischer was paid in full for his match against Spassky in 1992 (first prize $3.65m). The account under dispute was supposed to have around $3m in it.

Michael McDowell reports.
The Great Britain team of John Nunn, Colin McNab and Jonathan Mestel, sponsored by Winton Capital Management, retained the World Chess Solving Championship held in Wageningen, Netherlands on 1st-2nd August, after one of the toughest fought contests for years. The British had a disastrous start, scoring 20/30 in the two-move round to languish in 13th place amongst the 20 competing teams. Difficult sets of problems saw the lead change round by round, and a spirited fightback brought GB to the top in the penultimate round. They just held on to emerge winners ahead of Poland by 1¾ points. Final scores: 1st GB 148/180, 2nd Poland 146.25, 3rd Israel 139.25. Piotr Murdzia of Poland successfully defended his individual World title. Leading scores: 1st Piotr Murdzia 78.75/90, 2nd Jorma Paavilainen (Finland) 76.75, 3rd John Nunn 73. Other British scores: 10th Colin McNab 62, 14th Jonathan Mestel 59, 36th David Friedgood (solving as an individual) 48.75.
The Open Solving event was won by Michel Caillaud of France. Leading (and British) scores: 1st Michael Caillaud (France) 59.5/60, 2nd Piotr Murdzia (Poland) 54.5, 3rd Anatoly Mukoseev (Russia) 54.5 (slower time), 4th John Nunn 53.5, 22nd Jonathan Mestel 47.5, 30th Michael McDowell 45.5, 33rd David Friedgood 44, 47th Colin McNab 38 (93 competed).
In the first round of the WCSC solvers have 20 minutes to solve three two-movers. The following problem defeated many of the leading solvers.

A problem with a large number of tries (moves with a single refutation) to catch the unwary. The main tries involve complex line opening and closing. 1.Re6? threatening 2.Nf5 fails to 1 Rf4! because 2.Rd2 is no longer mate. Similarly 1.Be6? fails to 1 Bf4! because 2.Re4 is no longer available. A pair of tries on f4 fail to refutations on e6. 1.Nf4? (threats 2.Re4 and 2.Rd2) 1 Re6! (2.Nf5?) and 1.f4? (same threats) 1 Be6! (2.Bf6?). Other tries are 1.Rc3? Ne1!, 1.Bc7? Rd6!, 1.Bxh4 or Nxh4? Qxb7! The key is 1.cxb5! threatening 2.Rc4, with variations 1 Re6 2.Nf5, 1 Be6 2.Bf6, 1 Qa4 2.Qd5 and 1 Ne3 2.Rd2.
