There was an exciting start to the Biel GM Chess tournament with the three players you'd expect to be challenging for the title all winning, the top two rated players Alexander Morozevich and Teimour Radjabov will be expected to fight out the title but the rapidly improving Magnus Carlsen is always fascinating to watch. Elsewhere its been announced that Kasparov will play a one day exhibition rapid event against Judit Polgar, Victor Korchnoi and Anatoly Karpov. He always left the door open to compete in such events and it will be interesting to see how rusty he is. Elsewhere its the summer in Europe, there's chess everywhere!
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The Ikaros Chess Festival took place in Agios Kirikos 8th-22nd July 2006. The Ikaros Chess Festival has been held for the last 28 years on Ikaria island, one of the most picturesque and peaceful aegean islands of Greece. The main event was the Aegean Open 12th-19th July 2006 won by Mihail Salaev ahead on tie-break from Dmitry Svetushkin both scored 7.5/9.
This year 135 players took part in the festival which also included blitz, rapid and blind events as well as tournaments for juniors, ladies and veterans. The organisers have plans next year to make the tournament stronger and more interesting. One idea is to invite all past winners of the Aegean Championships in a celebratory event. More on this in the months to come.

The 2006 Oklahoma State Championship title was won this year by Tulsas Tom Braunlich who barely outpointed Sergey Galant of Oklahoma City on tie-breaks. The trophy is awarded annually to the highest finishing Oklahoma resident at this event. Event this year was held in Oklahoma City. FM Langer from Texas came in first with Bill Orton of Arkansas finishing 2nd. Darwin Yang from Dallas is the top rated 9 yr old in the USA with a USCF 1943 rating. Next closest 9 yr old is about 150 pts below him. He reminds me of Hikaru Nakamura when he was that age. Chief Arbiter was Frank Berry. Thanks to him for this report.

The 15th Kavala Open takes place 4th-11th August 2006. There is one (traditional) Open Tournament, which is at the same time the Greek Championships. This year they decided to form two groups with very low elo players competing separately, so as not to create great elo differences and discourage high-ranked players from participating (and being paired with a 1400 player, when a game loss, or draw might mean an "elo catastrophy") on a swiss tournament such as this one. This separation of low elos and the bigger ones is done for the first time in Greece, previously all competed in one tournament. The 1st group players will be eligible for Greek Open titles in men's and women's competitions.
Entries must be sent by fax to + 30.2510.226871 or by e-mail : vliog@tee.gr, not later than July 24th and should include full name, ELO Rating, telephone and dates of arrival and departure. Telephone communication : Vassilis Liogkas : +30.2510.622370 and 6977474684

Right from the start you are walking on a very narrow ridge, and you know that any inattentiveness will be your downfall. It is a scientific experiment and I will have to fight very hard for my chance." The WCC is being organized by Universal Event Promotion (UEP), in cooperation with the Art and Exhibition Hall.
