Gata Kamsky is definitely back. He took the top prize at the World Open
to add to his other recent achievements particularly in the Foros tournament.
Just before the world open he also won the Mayor's Cup Invitational rapid event
in New York. Its going to be interesting to see how much better he can get.
Joel Lautier won the annual Pivdenny Bank Geller Memorial in Odessa edging out
Vassily Ivanchuk. Elsewhere the summer is definitely here with a lot of events
starting this week and a few concluding.

The 34th Annual World Open took place in Philadelphia June 28th-July 4th
2006. Gata Kamsky wins a blitz playoff over Vadim Milov to win the event after

The Festival International d'Echecs de Marseille took place 30th June -
7th July 2006. There was an IM tournament which saw Stanislav Savchenko and
Nicolas Brunner finish on 7/9 and a WGM tournament with a three way tie also on
7/9. Daniel Fridman and Eric Prie finished with 7.5/9 in the open A. In this
latter event the games need some more work.

The Women's Chess Cup took place in Dresden July 7th-8th 2006. The event
was themed around the FIFA World Cup with the Group stages mirroring the
football group stages. Several German players represented countries where they
couldn't find players and a couple of teams in groups G and H didn't have
players. After the group stages there were quarter finals, semi-finals and a
final. Zsuzsa Polgar won the event for the USA beating Elisabeth Pähtz of
Germany.

Massy (France) with 6/6 . This tournament has been organised for many years by
a very strong group of French computer chess engine programmers. Unfortunately,

The final four rounds of the French Team Top 16 Championship took place

39th Biel International Festival
The 39th Biel International Festival takes place 22nd July - 4th August
2006. There are two closed tournaments, one for men, one for ladies.

15th Kavala Open
The 15th Kavala Open takes place 4th-11th August 2006. There is one
(traditional) Open Tournament, which is at the same time the Greek
Championships. This year they decided to form two groups with very low elo
players competing separately, so as not to create great elo differences and
discourage high-ranked players from participating (and being paired with a 1400
player, when a game loss, or draw might mean an "elo catastrophy") on a swiss
tournament such as this one. This separation of low elos and the bigger ones is
done for the first time in Greece, previously all competed in one tournament.
The 1st group players will be eligible for Greek Open titles in men's and
women's competitions.

Central Chess Club, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and the Chess Assistant Club
invites chess players and chess clubs from your country to take part in the
Open Internet chess blitz Cup dedicated to 50 year jubilee of the Central Chess
Club (Moscow) for the prizes of FIDE president Kirsan Ilyumzhinov.
The prize-winning fund of the Cup makes 10 000 USD that will be played
off in 10 qualifying tournaments (April 1 - May 3) and 2 final tournaments (May
6 and 10). The closing ceremony and winners rewarding will be made by Kirsan

Vladimir Kramnik vs. Deep Fritz Match Announced
Vladimir Kramnik will play the ChessBase computer program Deep Fritz in
a 6 game match 25th November - 5th December 2006 in the German’s Art and
Exhibition Hall in Bonne. Kramnik stands to win a prize of $1 Million US for a
win in the match doubling his starting fee.
Asked how he estimates his chances, Kramnik reacted cautiously: "Fritz
examines millions of moves per second. It is extraordinarily difficult to play
against such a calculating monster. Right from the start you are walking on a
very narrow ridge, and you know that any inattentiveness will be your downfall.
It is a scientific experiment and I will have to fight very hard for my
chance." The WCC is being organized by Universal Event Promotion (UEP), in
cooperation with the Art and Exhibition Hall.
