My thanks to Koos Stolk, Chris Bird, Petr Pisk, George Mirijanian, Thomas Henrich, Milos Orso, Rolf Sander, Axel Fritz and everyone else who helped with the issue.
It was always likely to be a quiet week in general after the Olympiad finished and so it turned out to be. The exception was the Leon knockout rapid event which saw world numbers one and two meet. Veselin Topalov was just one point clear of Viswanathan Anand in the rating list in April but Topalov would have moved further clear with his win at the Mtel Masters and also Anand had a poor Olympiad. So Anand would certainly have taken something from beating the Bulgarian in the Leon event 2.5-1.5 a margin which could have been larger had he not settled for a draw in the final game.
Hope you enjoy this issue.
Mark
The XIX edition of the Ciudad de León chess tournament took place 9th-11th June 2006 at the Junta de Castilla y León building in León, Spain. The four game matches were rapid play 20 minutes for the whole game, with an increment of 10 seconds after each move. Tie-breaks: blitz games (5 minutes for each player). Knockout event with semi-finals and then a final. The event is no longer "advanced chess" with players aided by computers.
Viswanathan Anand won game two of the final against Veselin Topalov. The remaining games were drawn giving a 2.5-1.5 win to the Indian.

The 2nd Lodi international chess festival took place 5th-11th June 2006. The surprise winner was former world championship candidate Henrique Mecking. Mecking suffered years of life threatening illness before making a shock return to chess in 1993. He hasn't really recaptured anything like his old form but has proved to be reasonably solid. This is a comparitively rare appearance in Europe.

The 15th Kavala Open takes place 4th-11th August 2006. There is one (traditional) Open Tournament, which is at the same time the Greek Championships. This year they decided to form two groups with very low elo players competing separately, so as not to create great elo differences and discourage high-ranked players from participating (and being paired with a 1400 player, when a game loss, or draw might mean an "elo catastrophy") on a swiss tournament such as this one. This separation of low elos and the bigger ones is done for the first time in Greece, previously all competed in one tournament. The 1st group players will be eligible for Greek Open titles in men's and women's competitions.
Entries must be sent by fax to + 30.2510.226871 or by e-mail : vliog@tee.gr, not later than July 24th and should include full name, ELO Rating, telephone and dates of arrival and departure. Telephone communication : Vassilis Liogkas : +30.2510.622370 and 6977474684

Vladimir Kramnik will play the ChessBase computer program Deep Fritz in a 6 game match 25th November - 5th December 2006 in the Germans Art and Exhibition Hall in Bonne. Kramnik stands to win a prize of $1 Million US for a win in the match doubling his starting fee.
Asked how he estimates his chances, Kramnik reacted cautiously: "Fritz examines millions of moves per second. It is extraordinarily difficult to play against such a calculating monster. Right from the start you are walking on a very narrow ridge, and you know that any inattentiveness will be your downfall. It is a scientific experiment and I will have to fight very hard for my chance." The WCC is being organized by Universal Event Promotion (UEP), in cooperation with the Art and Exhibition Hall.
Schedule: Game 1: Saturday 25.11.2006 16h Game 2: Monday 27.11.2006 16h Game 3: Wednesday 29.11.2006 16h Game 4: Friday 01.12.2006 16h Game 5: Sunday 03.12.2006 16h Game 6: Tuesday 05.12.2006 16h During the entire period of the match the Art and Exhibition Hall will offer a varied program.
