My thanks to Bognar Csaba, Bogdan Ionescu, Gary Suffield, Pierre Becker, Vladimir Sakotic, Mitko Iliev, Jovan Petronic, Chirila Radu-Catalin, Stewart Reuben, Holger Lieske, Mihajlo Stojanovic and everyone else who helped with the issue.
The Olympiads are a lot of work for me but as a chess fan I really love Olympiads. For those of us of a certain generation that grew up with Bobby Fischer there are the classic Varna, Havana and Siegen Olympiads with the special and unique games he played there (his only game against Botvinnik his loss to Spassky, can you just imagine what that would have been like if the internet had been around?). More recently Kasparov, Kramnik and Topalov have all made individual Olympiads their own. At the half way stage the potential stories are a win for someone other than Russia, Kramnik's return (currently 4/5) and the Magnus Carlsen's 2/2 start. We'll know better by next week. God, I really love this event.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The 37th Chess Olympiad takes place 20th May - 4th June 2006. The event includes the FIDE Chess Congress which will see Bessel Kok challenge Kirsan Ilyumzhinov for the FIDE Presidency.
The FIDE Chess Olympiad has just passed its half way stage. The leaders are 3rd seeds Armenia who have a one point advantage over the favourites Russia. It looks likely it will be a race to the line between these two countries as to who can score most heavily against the rest of the field as the two teams drew their match 2-2 in round 5. Russia lost the lead in round 6 when they lost to the Netherlands 2.5-1.5. The Olympiad used to be one of the jewels in the crown of world chess with all the top players and sometimes saw rare meetings between players otherwise separated by the iron curtain. Its had some ups and downs since then but this year its back almost to its very best. Sadly Veselin Topalov is missing as are Peter Leko, Ruslan Ponomariov and Judit Polgar. But almost everyone else who matters is there and every round has exciting pairings. Individuals who have caught the leadlines include Vladimir Kramnik in his return to chess after illness has scored 4/5 (including a win against Aleksandrov in round 7 where he committed a strange blunder. Aleksandrov calculated 18. ...Kf7 19.Nc5 Bc8 but played 18. ...Bc8 instead and had to resign). Also of interest is Magnus Carlsen in his second Olympiad but his first as top board. He missed the early rounds but has started with two wins including one over Michael Adams. Viswanathan Anand who makes his second successive appearance in the event after a long period of absense started with a win but has since been held to four draws. There is really too much to write about but the first seven rounds of games are in the PGN section. There seem to be some errors but the bulletins don't seem too bad, especially considering the weight of games.

Boris Spassky defeated Anatoly Karpov in the two game "Match des Légendes" on May 26th 2006 in Porto-Vecchio, Corsica. The players haven't played much in recent years, although they did draw their two games at the Unzicker 80 event in Mainz in 2005 (prior to that their last meeting seems to have been 1988 in the GMA World Cup). The time rate was 15 mins + 3 secs in front of 300 children.
Much like Karpov's win against Kasparov in New York in 2002 this is I believe Spassky's first match win against Karpov. Very much after the Lord Mayor's show but still a match win.
Indeed Spassky seems to have only won two games previously against Karpov, the first game of their 1974 Candidates semi-final and the second game of their 1982 TV match in Hamburg. Karpov won both matches in the end.

The 15th Kavala Open takes place 4th-11th August 2006. There is one (traditional) Open Tournament, which is at the same time the Greek Championships. This year they decided to form two groups with very low elo players competing separately, so as not to create great elo differences and discourage high-ranked players from participating (and being paired with a 1400 player, when a game loss, or draw might mean an "elo catastrophy") on a swiss tournament such as this one. This separation of low elos and the bigger ones is done for the first time in Greece, previously all competed in one tournament. The 1st group players will be eligible for Greek Open titles in men's and women's competitions.
Entries must be sent by fax to + 30.2510.226871 or by e-mail : vliog@tee.gr, not later than July 24th and should include full name, ELO Rating, telephone and dates of arrival and departure. Telephone communication : Vassilis Liogkas : +30.2510.622370 and 6977474684

Asked how he estimates his chances, Kramnik reacted cautiously: "Fritz examines millions of moves per second. It is extraordinarily difficult to play against such a calculating monster. Right from the start you are walking on a very narrow ridge, and you know that any inattentiveness will be your downfall. It is a scientific experiment and I will have to fight very hard for my chance." The WCC is being organized by Universal Event Promotion (UEP), in cooperation with the Art and Exhibition Hall.
