My thanks to Mitko Iliev, Alex Relyea, Tarjei J. Svensen, Thomas Henrich, Varlam Vepkhvishvili, Rob Huntington, Hassan Khaled, Andrew Hollinberger, Miklos Orso, Dieter Nisipeanu, Chirila Radu-Catalin, Anjo Anjewierden, Adolivo Capece, Olivier Breisacher, Stewart Reuben and everyone else who helped with the issue.
Veselin Topalov confirmed himself as the top player in the world at the moment. After a pretty indifferent start to the Mtel Masters he won five of his last six games including the last four to take clear first place from Gata Kamsky. Kamsky himself has every reason to be pleased. After struggling in Wijk aan Zee he showed he can compete at this level. If he can bring his openings up to world class level there is no reason to suppose he can't reclaim a place in the top 10. In contrast Viswanathan Anand will be dissapointed with his result and a failure to win a won position in the final round meant he lost the chance to finish joint second. As this event was seeing its final round the Olympiad was into its first. This is a massive event with 68 of the top 100 players (many of those missing will be Russians, they can only have 6!). Topalov, Leko, Ponomariov and Polgar are missing but almost everyone else is there. Vladimir Kramnik is back and his form will be a strong matter of interest. Anand heads the Indian team who are second favourites. Having said that Russia have got off to a 100% start with 8 wins in two rounds and look in no mood to finish second.
Hope you enjoy this issue.
Mark
The Mtel Masters took place in Sofia 9th (opening ceremony) - 21st (closing) May 2006. Topalov won five of his last six games to take the event by half a point from Gata Kamsky. Viswanathan Anand was a further half point behind.

The 37th Chess Olympiad takes place 20th May - 4th June 2006. The event includes the FIDE Chess Congress which will see Bessel Kok challenge Kirsan Ilyumzhinov for the FIDE Presidency.
There is a team composition list at the site:http://schach.wienerzeitung.at/tnr3410.aspx?art=0&lan=1&flag=30. The list is described as "preliminary. Out of the top 30 players in the world only Topalov, Leko, Ponomariov, Polgar, Mamedyarov, Malakhov, Jakovenko are missing the latter two simply failing to make a very strong Russian team. The biggest misses are of course FIDE Champion Veselin Topalov, Peter Leko, Ruslan Ponomariov and Judit Polgar. However this event sees the return to active play of Vladimir Kramnik after a break since December 2005 for treatment for his health problems. His form will be a major matter of interest. His Russian team are clear favourites to take the event. Viswanathan Anand plays his second Olympiad in a row for India after many years of not competing. He leads a very strong Indian side that are second seeds. Third sees are the ever solid and experienced Armenian side. In 4th are Ukraine who are missing Ruslan Ponomariov but still command a full squad in the top 100 in the world. A huge number of stars compete including 68 of the top 100. Victor Korchnoi again returns as top board of Switzerland so we may see some interesting pairings for him.
I'm waiting for the games to settle down and the first bulletins to appear before giving any games.

The 15th Kavala Open takes place 4th-11th August 2006. There is one (traditional) Open Tournament, which is at the same time the Greek Championships. This year they decided to form two groups with very low elo players competing separately, so as not to create great elo differences and discourage high-ranked players from participating (and being paired with a 1400 player, when a game loss, or draw might mean an "elo catastrophy") on a swiss tournament such as this one. This separation of low elos and the bigger ones is done for the first time in Greece, previously all competed in one tournament. The 1st group players will be eligible for Greek Open titles in men's and women's competitions.
Entries must be sent by fax to + 30.2510.226871 or by e-mail : vliog@tee.gr, not later than July 24th and should include full name, ELO Rating, telephone and dates of arrival and departure. Telephone communication : Vassilis Liogkas : +30.2510.622370 and 6977474684

Vladimir Kramnik will play the ChessBase computer program Deep Fritz in a 6 game match 25th November - 5th December 2006 in the Germans Art and Exhibition Hall in Bonne. Kramnik stands to win a prize of $1 Million US for a win in the match doubling his starting fee.
Asked how he estimates his chances, Kramnik reacted cautiously: "Fritz examines millions of moves per second. It is extraordinarily difficult to play against such a calculating monster. Right from the start you are walking on a very narrow ridge, and you know that any inattentiveness will be your downfall. It is a scientific experiment and I will have to fight very hard for my chance." The WCC is being organized by Universal Event Promotion (UEP), in cooperation with the Art and Exhibition Hall.
Schedule: Game 1: Saturday 25.11.2006 16h Game 2: Monday 27.11.2006 16h Game 3: Wednesday 29.11.2006 16h Game 4: Friday 01.12.2006 16h Game 5: Sunday 03.12.2006 16h Game 6: Tuesday 05.12.2006 16h During the entire period of the match the Art and Exhibition Hall will offer a varied program.
