The big announcement of the week was that there will be a chess reunification match between Vladimir Kramnik and Veselin Topalov. How this plays in the FIDE elections is uncertain but its obvious that this is good news for chess. Zdenko Kozul won the European Individual Championships finishing half a point clear of Vassily Ivanchuk.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The Danish Chess Championships took place in Aalborg, Denmark 8th-17th April 2006.
The Championships introduced a whole new tournament system, Gladiator Chess, where the players will be playing a game at normal time settings (40 moves in 100 minutes + 30 minutes, and adding 30 seconds per move).
In case of a draw, they continued to play, colours reversed, a game of rapid chess with the time settings 25 minutes + 10 seconds per move. In case of yet a draw, players will continue to play, colours changing at every game, blitz chess, 10 minutes + 5 seconds per move until a game is decided. Thus, only 1s and 0s counted.
Sune Berg Hansen took first (he had the most victories in the standard time rate games) from Nicolai Vesterbaek Pedersen in 2nd, Karsten Rasmussen in 3rd and Steffen Pedersen in fourth. The top two were unaffected by the format.

The Cogas Match this year took place between Jan Timman and Viktor Korchnoi. The four game match took place in Almemlo, 14th-15th April 2006. Alongside was a six round open on the same dates. All four games were drawn between Korchnoi and Timman. Sipke Ernst demolished Frank Kroeze 3.5-0.5. There are a few games from the open tournament won by Igor Khenkin with 5/6 but I need a list with full names in at least. (C Richter, and A Orlov were a couple of players impossible to identify from the info given)

www.playchess.com held the final of the annual PAL/CSS Freestyle Chess Tournament (advanced chess) 8th-9th April (final).
The event was this time dominated by the Hydra machine and its team around Chrilly Donninger. Only Corr GM Arno Nickel had a very promising position, not to say he totally outplayed, against Hydra but failed in time trouble. 2nd the programmer of Rybka engine IM Vasik Rajlich and his team (the team members are at least not known for me). 3rd and the winner of 2000 US$ is "Relic" and the team around Darren DiAlfonso form the USA. 1st prize was 8,000 US$. the 2nd with 4,000 US$. Places 4-16 will receive prizes in form of software and books. Total prize fund was 16,000 US$. Time rate: 45mins + 5 seconds)
The next Freestyle Tourney is scheduled for 16th-18th June 2006 (not definately yet). http://www.computerschach.de/ as the offc. tourney and host site.

Kramnik and Topalov to play re-unification match. FIDE are reporting:http://www.fide.com/news.asp?id=978 that there will be a 12 game reunification match between Vladimir Kramnik and Veselin Topalov in Elista. This has subsquently been confirmed by Carsten Hensel, Kramnik's manager. The match comes at the end of extensive negotiations which started after Topalov's win in San Luis. It also sees a significant consession from Kramnik in that he wanted matches to settle future world championships but the winner will play in a World Match tournament.
Each player will receive 500,000 USD net from FIDE and in addition certain revenues from possible commercial sponsorships. The winner goes to the WCC tournament 2007 (see below), the loser has to wait for the next cycle. The games will be played under classical time control (120 minutes for the first 40 moves, 60 minutes for the next 20 moves and then 15 minutes for the rest of the game plus an additional 30 seconds per move starting from move 61). Possible Tiebreak: 4 games of rapid chess (25min+10sec), then 2 blitz games (5min+10sec), then sudden death (6min/5min) with white to win.
Dates: Open Ceremony 21st September 2006, 7.00 p.m. Play on: 23rd, 24th, 26th, 27th, 29th, 30th September, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th (tie-breaks) October 2006. Closing ceremony 13th October 2006.
Later in the week a FIDE Press release said that Kirsan Ilyumzhinov announced the match tournament with be in Mexico City in 2007. Similar format to San Luis.
Garry Kasparov finally drops out as world number one through inactivity. When I asked Anand and Topalov about the race to be number one Anand virtually conceded Topalov would be top because Anand wasn't playing any more rated events. Topalov said he could blow it at Morelia and Linares, and he nearly did. A dreadful performance in Morelia was made up for by a tremendous comeback in Linares and he edges out Anand by a point. Both are within striking distance of Kasparov 2812 mark too. Levon Aronian rises to number three in the world from five continuing his rise as a new star of the game. Peter Svidler effectively drops a place holding number four but losing 22 points. Leko rises a place, and Ponomariov and Morozevich both gain. Vassily Ivanchuk rises one place to 7 (effectively holding) after his rating was corrected a few days after the list was released. Vladimir Kramnik drops again after his poor performance in the Russian Championship. Gelfand makes up the remaining top 10 place. Teimour Radjabov's rise continues after his great result in Linares gaining 17 points. The rest of the list is remarkably devoid of interest, only players in the 90s drop out of the list and there are re-entries from players on the edge of the list although Baadur Jobava did gain 32 points to get back in the list at 65. Magnus Carlsen gains another 21 points in his inevitable rise.
Below is the corrected list. Nigel Short and Vassily Ivanchuk were rated for single games that they didn't play initially. There were a number of corrections elsewhere, the originally given ratings are in brackets.
