The final Bundesliga weekend took place April 1st-2nd 2006. Baden Baden (Anand, Svidler, Shirov etc) took the league title with a 7-1 win against Godesberger and then a 6-2 win against Köln Porz. Köln Porz took the rather odd decision to name Michael Adams in their team when they knew he was in fact playing in the French League this weekend. Of course this sort of conflict in scheduling between leagues was unfortunate to say the least.
Michael Adams issued an open letter on Tuesday 4th April 2006.
OPEN LETTER FROM GM MICHAEL ADAMS
It has come to my attention that I was this weekend named in the Porz side for the final Bundesliga matches. I only became aware of this situation when another player at the French league weekend, where I was playing, informed me that my name had appeared for Porz on board 1. Porz knew that I was unable to play for them as I was participating in the French league on the same dates, as I informed them several months ago. At no point was I ever due to play this weekend, as the Porz team were well aware. Naturally I am angry and upset by their actions. After this senseless behaviour on the part of the Porz team I have requested that they remove my name from their team list for next season, and I will not participate in any future matches for them. Michael Adams.
Games and final results in TWIC 595. Please note I corrected TWIC595 a few days after its release, the final round 15 games had the year 2005 instead of 2006.

The Danish Chess Championships take place in Aalborg, Denmark 8th-17th April 2006.
The Championships introduce a whole new tournament system, Gladiator Chess, where the players will be playing a game at normal time settings (40 moves in 100 minutes + 30 minutes, and adding 30 seconds per move).
In case of a draw, they will continue to play, colours reversed, a game of rapid chess with the time settings 25 minutes + 10 seconds per move. In case of yet a draw, players will continue to play, colours changing at every game, blitz chess, 10 minutes + 5 seconds per move until a game is decided. Thus, only 1s and 0s will count.

The Mephisto Schloss-Open took place 6th-9th April 2006 in Werther (Germany). News: Gabriel Eleftheriadis.
The winner this year was surprisingly GM Schebler with 5,5. Also 5,5 points made GM Buhmann, GM Halkias from Greece and the polish Rafal Antoniewski from our club.
At the beginning of the tournament Halkias and Gutman startet very well with 3 points but Halkias made two consecutive draws (against Karpatchev and Schebler) in round 4 and 5, while Gutman lost against Buhmann and Siebrecht. So Schebler with two wins against Karpatchev and Gutman became first with 4,5/5.In the 6th round Schebler made draw with black against Halkias and could make a very short draw in the last round against young Braun in 6 moves to win the tournament. Antoniewski drew against Buhmann with white in the last round in only 9 moves. Buhmann played French with black, while Halkias always Sicilian, the Alapin-Variation was generally very popular.Schebler always finachettoed his white squared bishop. Very good results were also delivered by young ambitious players like Vitali Braun from our club, who won against Gelashvilli and Ivanov and young Tereick who won also against Gelashvilli and Souleidis.Very disappointing the results of IM Souleidis and especially GM Gelashvilli who was ELO-Favorite and became only 19th with just 4 points losing a considerable amount of ELO. The players were very satisfied with the conditions in the tournament, which was sponsored by Saitek this year. Next year there will be the 13th Schloss-Open with hopefully even more players and exciting games.

Asked how he estimates his chances, Kramnik reacted cautiously: "Fritz examines millions of moves per second. It is extraordinarily difficult to play against such a calculating monster. Right from the start you are walking on a very narrow ridge, and you know that any inattentiveness will be your downfall. It is a scientific experiment and I will have to fight very hard for my chance." The WCC is being organized by Universal Event Promotion (UEP), in cooperation with the Art and Exhibition Hall.
