My thanks to Michael Rahal, Varlam Vepkhvishvili, Andy McFarland, Nebojsa Baralic, Ahmed Adly, Douglas Griffin, Tarjei J. Another huge week of interesting chess. The Amber tournament has just got under way with the first three rounds having taken place. Alexander Morozevich and the in form Levon Aronian have taken an early lead in the over all standings. The Category 18 Poikovsky tournament started at exactly the same time with players such as Ponomariov and Shirov competing. The women's world championship has reached its semi-final stage. Magnus Carlsen defeated Viswanathan Anand in the semi-final of a little publicised blitz event which took place after the Reykjavic open. Finally there is the sad news of the death of Ratmar Kholmov who died at 80 years old, one of the great generation of soviet grandmasters he played almost to the end of his life.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

XXII Reykjavik Open took place 6th-14th March 2006. The Reykjavik Open 2006 Champion was the 23 year old Armenian Gabriel Sargissian on tie-break, he finished on 7/9 as did Pentala Harikrishna from India, Igor-Alexander Nataf from France, Shakhriyar Mamedyarov from Azerbaijan and Ahmed Adly from Egypt. 19 year old Egyptian GM Ahmed Adly defeated 15 year old Norwegian Magnus Carlsen in a flutuating game where Adly had the advantage out of the opening, then later Carlsen then had a win for a move but after missing that the game turned around again decisively for Adly. This denied Carlsen clear first place and gave Adly his best ever result, 2nd place on tie-break behind Sargissian.

The Glitnir Blitz 2006 tournament took place in Reykjavic following the open on 15th-16th March 2006. 196 players competed. There was a preliminary swiss event followed by a knockout. Details are sketchy, below are some of the details I've put together. Carlsen defeated Anand 2-0 in the semi-final and Hannes Stefansson in the final. A number of games are available both of Carlsen's and the event as a whole (live coverage in a viewer) the latter games I've had to make guesses about which order they were played during the rounds and some are clearly incomplete. Very little advance publicity. I would welcome more games and detailed results because this event was very strong.

(Internet Chess Club (ICC), March 17th-25th 2006) IM Michael Rahal (EDAMI, Barcelona) reports:
For the seventh year running the VII internet Chess Tournament "Ciudad de Dos Hermanas" is being held on the Internet Chess Club playing zone (http://www.chessclub.com). This event is clearly one of the most important Internet chess tournaments in the world, regarding both the number and the level of the participants. Up to the moment, 1.696 participants have registered, and each day more players are coming in. Already qualified for the finals are the GM's Hikaru Nakamura (USA) and Pavel Eljanov (Ukraine), and the more than probable qualification of the young star GM Magnus Carlsen as best second.
The total prize fund is 6.100 euros, with a first prize of 1.800 euros. In addition, the first six non GM-IM players classified will receive a free 6-months subscription to ICC, and twelve free 6 month free membership prizes will be raffled between all participants in the event who finish at least one qualifier.
As in previous editions, the playing system is as follows: twelve 12-round Swiss qualifiers using the Fischer System playing rate: 4 minutes + 1 seconds. Qualifiers are held twice a day from March 17th to 22nd. March 23rd is a rest day and the finals are held on March 24th and 25th. The 12 qualifier winners plus the 20 best scores qualify to the 32 KO final. Registration for the last six qualifiers is still open. Complete standings, game file, PGN game files and other interesting information can be found at the Dos Hermanas web site http://www.doshermanas.net (specifically http://www.chessclub.com/resources/event/doshermanas2006/)

Ratmir Kholmov 13th May 1925 18th February 2006. One of the very strong generation of Soviet chess players has died at the age of 80. Kholmov rarely played abroad but enjoyed successes such as finishing on 12/19 tied with the winner Leonid Stein in the Soviet Championships of 1963. He played as recently as December finishing 3rd in a tournament in Dnepropetrovsk in the Ukraine (TWIC581). If I find time I hope to write some more on this sad event.

Believe it or not this may be another false event, I'm checking out if this is yet another problem event after one of the players below says he has not been invited.
There will be a Heroes of Chernobyl Memorial in Slavutich comemorating the April, 26th, 1986 explosion at nuclear station in Chernobyl. The event takes place 12st-26th April 2006.
I'm assured that the event has different organisers to the ficticious event that took place under this name last year. Also the players are a good deal more famous than last year.

Asked how he estimates his chances, Kramnik reacted cautiously: "Fritz examines millions of moves per second. It is extraordinarily difficult to play against such a calculating monster. Right from the start you are walking on a very narrow ridge, and you know that any inattentiveness will be your downfall. It is a scientific experiment and I will have to fight very hard for my chance." The WCC is being organized by Universal Event Promotion (UEP), in cooperation with the Art and Exhibition Hall.
