There can now be little doubt that 23 year old Levon Aronian has arrived. Rising from 10th to 5th in the January rating list after winning the FIDE World Cup, he has now won one of the two biggest elite tournaments of the year by taking clear first in Linares. The consensus is that he is still pretty raw and that in a couple of years time he could be "really" strong. The event as a whole was a tremendous success with lots of fighting and interesting chess. In a possible first (although its happened in a World Championship match) the event was played on two continents, North America followed by a move back to the traditional Linares for the second half. The first half in Morelia was a disaster for the favourite Veselin Topalov. He scored 2.5/7 and was placed seven of eight. 5.5/7 almost recovered all the ground and if all the games had been drawn in the final round then he would have won the event on tie-break. For a long time Peter Leko looked like he would win the event after starting with 3.5/4. He got bogged down and an example of his cautious mindset was his short draw in round 8 against Francisco Vallejo Pons in what was a pretty trivially winning position. Leko lost to Topalov in the penultimate round in a game he should have drawn and then was mopped up by Aronian in spite of having white in the final round. Second equal with Topalov was 19 year old Teimour Radjabov for who this result with a solid +4 -2 =8 is also a good indication for the future. Lots of other good chess about including the Women's World Championship, Reykjavic and various national championships. Oh and the very strong Amber event starts Saturday!
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The 7th and 8th Rounds of the 4NCL took place 4th-5th March 2006. My thanks to Arthur Brameld for the games.
In Division 1, table-toppers Wood Green 1 and Guildford-ADC 1 continue on their merry way with a pair of comfortable victories apiece. Although both teams have had plenty of scares this season, its beginning to look like their final round encounter will again decide the title. Wood Green have the advantage on games points perhaps this turn out to be important if the pair tie on match points. Slough Sharks 1 lead the chasing pack an honourable mention to their GM board 1, David Navara, who now has a perfect six wins from six in his first 4NCL season. In the Division 1 relegation battle there are 5 teams looking to scramble away from danger. Almost all the matches between these 5 have now been played, so it looks like they will all be looking to land upsets in the final weekend. Reading from the bottom, its going to be tough for Barbican 4NCL 2, 3Cs Oldham 1 and North West Eagles 1.

Every year on President's Day Weekend (Feb. 18-20) the U.S. Amateur Team Championships are held in four different locations throughout the United States. There is South (Florida), Midwest (Illinois), West (California) and East (Parsippany, New Jersey). The East was where the event started back in 1970, so Team East is always the largest of the four by far. In recent years it has been consistently breaking its own record of being the largest team tournament ever held in the Western Hemisphere, but this year it fell a little short: about 1,150 players competed in 271 teams. While this is just shy of last year's record of 286 teams and 1205 players, it is almost certainly going to be the largest chess team event held in this half of the world this year.
Five teams tied for first with 5.5 points out of 6, but the winner by Team East's unique tiebreaking system was "My G8 Predecessors" which was originally seeded tenth. The team consisted of: Charles Riordan, Alex Cherniack, Lawyer Times and Charles Mays. The other four teams were: "University of Texas Dallas - White," "Mike Khodarkovskys Tycoons," "The Fed Express" and "Hikaru wins the games; Evan b...".
The word "Amateur" in the title of the event refers to the fact that the average team rating cannot exceed master strength, which is 2,200 USCF. However, within that restriction anything goes and usually there are dozens of titled players at any given Team East. There were even several grandmasters, including 1954 U.S. Champion GM Arthur Bisguier and then-reigning U.S. Champion GM Hikaru Nakamura. Bisguier was undefeated with a 5-1 record, but Nakamura's upset loss to Pennsylvania master William Peterson was one of the sensations of the tournament.
The U.S. Team East is always an enjoyable event, a strange mixture of the serious and the silly. In spite of the odd costumes and funny team names, serious competitive chess is the order of the day. At least a dozen of this year's participants went on to play in the recently completed U.S. Championships, including both women's finalists: WGM Rusudan Goletiani and WGM Anna Zatonskih.
The credit for the success of this event goes to Steve Doyle, his team of directors, and the New Jersey State Chess Federation.

The 124th Oxford vs Cambridge Varsity Match took place on 11th March 2006 at the RAC Club, Pall Mall, London. The world's oldest regular chess fixture has run from 1873, with gaps for the two world wars. Oxford University won 4½-3½ after seeming worse for much of the match. In the end it rested on the top board game which swung Oxford's way in the final half hour. News and games John Saunders.

Their press release says:
FIDE Presidency Campaign 2006 The English Chess Federation officially announces its support for the candidacy of Bessel Kok, as nominee for the next President of FIDE (Fédération Internationale Des Échecs), the official body for the World Chess Federation. The ECF acknowledges the good work and valuable input of the incumbent Kirsan Iilmyumzhinov, Deputy President, Georgios Makropoullos and their team and also recognises the considerable contribution of David Jarrett as FIDE Treasurer. The ECF Board approved the official endorsement of Bessel Kok at the Board meeting held on 11th March 2006. For further information on this press release, or any other matters relating to Chess including news stories, sponsorship opportunities etc please contact 01424 775222 or email office@englishchess.org.uk

There was a letter signed by many of the top English Grandmasters in support of Bessel Kok before the meeting.
We, the undersigned English Grandmasters, would like to express our support for Bessel Kok in the forthcoming Presidential Election in Turin, May 2006. He has an exemplary record of organising and supporting top level chess events as well as a highly distinguished business career. We believe this is a unique opportunity to restore credibility to FIDE and to reverse the decline in their capacity to attract commercial sponsorship. For these reasons we implore the English Chess Federation to join the clear majority of their European colleagues in supporting positive change after a decade of stagnation.

Asked how he estimates his chances, Kramnik reacted cautiously: "Fritz examines millions of moves per second. It is extraordinarily difficult to play against such a calculating monster. Right from the start you are walking on a very narrow ridge, and you know that any inattentiveness will be your downfall. It is a scientific experiment and I will have to fight very hard for my chance." The WCC is being organized by Universal Event Promotion (UEP), in cooperation with the Art and Exhibition Hall.
