My thanks to Varlam Vepkhvishvili, Helen Milligan, Adolivio Capece, David Avron, Frank Berry, Thomas Henrich, George Mirijanian, Jonathan Berry, Geoffrey Borg, Andy McFarland, Koos Stolk, Laszlo Nagy, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr and everyone else who helped with the issue.
The Morelia half of the traditional Linares tournament started with six of the first eight games being decisive. Peter Svidler started off in good style beating Veselin Topalov in the first round and then Vallejo Pons in the second. He's not the only Peter on 2/2, Leko also started with wins against Vallejo and Radjabov. Half a point behind is Vassily Ivanchuk and he seems to be in good form playing well in Wijk aan Zee and starting well here. Pre-event favourite Topalov isn't out of it yet but is already a point and a half off the lead. I'm really looking forward to the rest of the event.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

Léo Battesti has joined forces with Bessel Kok's campaign for the FIDE Presidency Campaign. Battesti had declared his intention to stand himself but now he and the French Chess Federation have come to an agreement in Cannes to join forces. One of the major planks will be the moving of FIDE's head quarters to the Paris Ile-de-France Region, with a current offer in Saint- Quentin-en-Yvelines, where the brand new offices of the French Chess Federation are being set up. With support from Belgium, Thailand, Canada, Afghanistan and the US Chess Federations in recent weeks there is a head of steam building up for the Bessel Kok ticket. Their campaign site is at: http://www.rightmove06.org.
Election forms for the General Assembly 2006 are on the FIDE site http://www.fide.com/news.asp?id=947 and must reach the FIDE Secretariat by 2nd March 2006. Each candidate needs to be nominated by his federation and as the Russian Federation supports sitting President Kirsan Iljumzhinov it means Anatoly Karpov can't stand. However its looking increasingly likely its going to be a straight fight between Kirsan Iljumzhinov and Bessel Kok.
Bessel Kok gave an interview with Chessbase at: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=2929
Iljumzhinov himself is also campaigning appearing in Azerbaijan according to a report at: http://www.trend.az/?mod=shownews&news=16073〈=en
The elections are in Turin on June 2nd 2006.
