Next Saturday sees the start of the 2006 Wijk aan Zee tournament. They again have a superb field with 6 of the top 10 players in the world. FIDE Champion Veselin Topalov and Viswanathan Anand will fight it out for the World Number One spot which will be vacated by Garry Kasparov in April unless he makes a shock come back. Vladimir Kramnik withdrew from the tournament at the last moment and at last provided an explanation as to what has been ailing him for nearly two years now as his rating has declined. He is going for intense treatment on a form of arthritis which he hopes will finally restore him to full health and give him a chance to restore his form. The organisers still have an exciting field and Kramnik's replacement is 20 year old Shakhriyar Mamedyarov who has been steadily improving over the years. I'm really looking forward to the event.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The Corus tournament in Wijk aan Zee takes place January 14th-29th 2006. 4th seed Vladimir Kramnik dropped out at the last minute. His performance at the Russian Championships was poor and indeed he didn't look well in the photos from that event. In his announcement on his website he finally gives an explanation as to the ailment that has been troubling him for the last couple of years. Rising star 20 year old Shakhriyar Mamedyarov has been named as his replacement.
Here is the statement on: http://www.kramnik.com/eng/ dated January 5th 2006.
I would like to inform the chess community that due to health problems I shall not be able to participate in the Corus Chess Tournament 2006. A couple of years ago a form of arthritis was diagnosed. This disease causes painful inflammation in the joints. Unfortunately since that time, the symptoms have started to appear more often and with greater severity. A new recent crises makes it necessary to undertake serious clinical treatment. Solving the present problem within a few months will allow me to come back and enjoy competitive chess at the highest level. I want to stress clearly, that as always I am eager to continue and enhance my chess career. There are still many goals to achieve.
Friso Nijboer withdrew following the death of his mother and was replaced by Arkadij Naiditsch.

The 24th Chess Memorial of Stanislaw Gawlikowski took place in Warsaw, 16th-18th December 2005 in the Olympic Centre Wybrzeze Gdynskie street 4. Zoltan Gyimesi beat Vladimir Malaniuk 1.5-0.5 in the final. There is now a large game file. There are errors and incomplete games but the file isn't bad for such a big rapid event. My thanks to Tomasz Delega.

IM Jean Hébert was the joint winner of the 58th Quebec Open Championship with 6.5/9, with Antoine Berube, Simon Gravel, and FM Vahagn Voskanyan. The tournament is usually Canada's largest open event, although this year its 195 players ranked it just behind the Canadian Open for attendance. Hopefully I can round up all the games at some point.
