1) Introduction
---------------
Due to computer system problems (including lack of netscape and easy
transfer of files) a number of items have had to be put back to
next week. Also its slowed down preparation a lot. But there
is still a lot to be excited by. Belgrade is one of the best
events of the year, the Icelandic Championships have started, the
Zonal in Linares should be interesting.
Please note that there is a Calendar www page by Michael Niermann
http://www.mathematik.uni-dortmund.de/lsvi/niermann/calendar.html
I will still include the calendar every few issues. I couldn't even
access it this week due to system problems.
My thanks to Shay Bushinsky, Einar Karlsson, Sklavounos Panagiotis,
Kevin O'Connell, Jeroen van de Weijer and Joerg Harm for the
preparation of this issue.
Hope you enjoy this issue.
Mark

3) Paris INTEL Grand Prix
-----------------------
Last week as I went to press I posted all the games and results
from the Paris Intel Grand Prix. Earlier in the afternoon Anand
had missed the first game of his semi-final against Kasparov.
Early reports gave traffic as being the problem. Instead it
turned out to be a communications problem.
Alessandro Miotto reports "Anand was really convinced that the semifinal
started at 15:30, while it was foreseen at 13:30. The taxi arrived at
around 14:15 with all the public awaiting outside, and there he learnt he
lost game one. Anand did not go to the player council on Sunday morning,
but on Saturday, before leaving, asked at what time the games were scheduled.
Later Filipowicz, the referee, suggested that he might have confused
"treize heurs trente" (13:30) with "trois heurs trente" (3:30 pm) and
Anand himself acknowledged this as the reason of his mistake.
Indeed at the Espace Cardin there was no timetable with session times,
even for the public, and I found this amazing already on friday when I
went to buy the tickets. Sunday sessions had a different schedule than the
other days."
The final standings in the 1995 Grand Prix were:
------------------------------------------------
Kasparov 19 points
Ivanchuk 14 points
Kramnik 12 points
Anand 11 points
Adams 6 points
Morozevich 5 points
then a large number of players on 4 points.
Speelman points out that in the final there was a lot of money
at stake on the 5 minute games. Kasparov won $35,000 on these
two games alone, it cost Kramnik $45,000, this was because of
the closeness of the above standings. Kramnik would have won
the Grand Prix for the second year running if he had won the
final (which at first he seemed destined to do after winning
the first game of the final with Black.)
My thanks to Kevin O`Connell whose Intellegent Chess System
covered the event for the official gamescores. The corrections
are in the games section (mostly just additional moves at the
end of the shuffle.)
4) Icelandic Championships 1995 by Einar Karlsson
-----------------------------------------------
After 4 rounds GM Stefansson is a whole point above GM Hjartarson in the
1995 Icelandic Championship. These two are expected to fight for the top
seat. If Stefansson wins it will be his first championship victory but
Hjartarson is defending the title since he won it last year.
The games have been fun to watch since only 6 of 24 have ended in a draw.
This is partly because of the huge ELO difference between the top and the
bottom, 390 points.
The games in pgn and results can be seen on: http://www.vks.is/skak
the day after each round.
