My thanks to John Saunders, Andrea Malfagia, Kurpnieks Vairis, Mikhail Golubev, Doru Ionescu, Bognar Csaba, Hernán Sartori, Mogens Nielsen, Adolivio Capece, James Alvis, Eugeny Atarov, Goran Tomic, Dr. Hesham Elgendy, Stéphane Laborde, Giovanni Carlo Liistro, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Lahcene Chemali, Greg Shahade, Gary Suffield, George Mastrokoukos, Jovan Petronic and everyone else who helped with the issue.
The first round of the FIDE World Championships in San Luis (Argentina). I have to say I'm surprised both by the strength and format of the event and there is no doubt the winner will have a lot of credibility. Whilst the FIDE President has stated the winner could meet Vladimir Kramnik to tie up loose ends he is in a strong position as the players have agreed to stick with FIDE after the event and not play Kramnik without FIDE's permission. Kramnik had a modest success at the European Club Cup with his +1=3 score gaining him some rating points. Nevertheless he really needs a major success or he could end up being sidelined. As to the San Luis Match tournament its format is similar to the 1948 World Championship Match tournament and the Candidates tournaments 1950-62. These events split almost down the middle with half of them being exciting events with lots of decisive results and half being full of bore draws. A case could be made for almost all the competitors winning the event given the right form but you'd be hard pushed to look beyond Anand, Topalov and Leko as pre-event favourites. That said I don't believe Kasparov's estimation of 95% chances for one of the three of them winning, 75% would be as far as I'd go. I'm excited, and looking forward to Wednesday.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

Anatoly Karpov was in Argentina reports Hernán Sartori of the Clarín newspaper.
He gave two simuls.
Saturday 17th September 2005
He played a match against a six boards team of the Círculo de Ajedrez de Villa Martelli, a tradicional chess club of northern Buenos Aires.
He finished 4,5 to 1,5
He won against IM Diego Valerga and Enrique Scarella, and 15 year ord Germán Della Morte. He made draw against GM Sergio Slipak, IM Alejo De Dovitiis y WIM Marisa Zuriel, national champion.
Tuesday 20th September 2005
He played against six boards in a shopping center: Diego Flores (22 years), recent Argentine champion; Gastón Needleman (15), eighth in recent Continental Championships and invited to 2006 World Championships; Germán Della Morte (15); and the winners of the different categories of the Festival "Miguel Najdorf": Robert Hungasky (18), Anton Kovalyov (13) and Cristian Massaferro (10).
Karpov won against Flores (on time), Massaferro and Hungaski (also time). Then made draws against Della Morte and Kovalyov. And finally lost against Needleman, the future of national chess. Karpov was so upset that he did not attend the prize award meeting, in which was invited the Vicepresident of Argentina. But at night Karpov had dinner with him, to be diplomatic.

These are the quotes:
With the respect you have won in world chess, why are you planning to participate in a difficult political campaign to confront the Fide president?
Because we must stop the people that are destroying professional chess. They can´t find sponsors to make important tournaments. They don´t push the National Federations to develop junior and youth chess. And great masters are confronting a weak FIDE because it doesn´t follow the rules and changes the schedule of the tournaments. Every tournament must be a success for chess, but if somebody organizes one because he finds a sponsor, they get jealous. That is why in many countries there are so many problems between chess players and Federations.
About Kirsan Ilyumzhinov
"His main weakness is that he can not accept critics. He turns apart anybody who criticised him and he has only people who say what he wants to hear"
About World Championships
"Top players agreed in Prague 2002 that there is no need for a knock out system. They would like to see a strong competition between the best. FIDE participated in that meeting, but unfortunately nothing happened".
About San Luis World Championships
"It will be a digitated World Championships, because all the best players won't be there. It just happened once in chess history, after Second World War".
About changes
"We need changes at the top. We lost Kasparov, who stopped playing because of this unclear situation. We hope to see changes, because when the most famous players are there, the easiest is to find a sponsor".
About his rivalry with Kasparov
In soccer, everybody confronts Diego Maradona and Pelé to decide who was the best. In chess, everybody confronted you with Kasparov. ¿Why not enjoy your rivalry and the chess you both played against each other, rather than confronting you? --It is a sign of the time. Mass media prefers articles with problems. Television doesn´t show a constructed bridge. Television only shows a destroyed bridge.
About presenting chess to children
"The future of the chess depends on the level in schools. Developing masters or grand masters is not the most important and I don´t think it´s even necesary. What is important is to present chess to every child and then let him choose if he wants to play it or not"
About chess "Chess teaches to think logically, to make plans, to administrate time and to develop memory. I tell parents not to worry if your child gives two hours per day to chess, because he will recover those hours by administrating time and developing his memory".
About Argentina and chess "I feel almost at home. People know me and I know people. It's one of my favorite countries. I came here for the first time in 1978, when chess was very popular. It's excepcional that besides the political and economical problems, chess activity continues here"
In addition to Hernán Sartori's report above ChessBase http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=2647 also reported the event. One interesting historical point was the meeting over Anatoly Karpov and Diego Maradona on a human chessboard. The game wasn't of much interest as it was only 4 moves long. Karpov vs Maradona 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 d6 4.Nc3 and draw.

Soren Sogaard announces that his site Seagaard ChessReviews will no longer be updated.
His letter: Dear reader! This is the last "newsletter" you receive from Seagaard ChessReviews. I have run the site for 5½ years, but now I no longer have the time to keep running the site. I have looked for sponsors for some time now, but I didn't succeed. Without these sponsors it is not easy to run the site. It was a hard decision, but the site, products and reviews will still be there for you - I just stop reviewing the products that I receive. If I receive products in the future, I will still store them in the database. However, I will writ eto the publishers that the site is closing so don't count on a lot of new products ;-) Thanks to all the people who supported me during the years. I am happy that more than 320 people now subscribes to the newsletter and that we have + 70.000 hits every week. All the best Soren Sogaard - Seagaard ChessReviews
