Another busy summer week and another 3000 games played. Up and coming star Andrei Volokitin leads the main event in Biel with 5/8 with two rounds to go. This performance so far will come as a relief to him after his disaster in his last major tournament in Sarajevo. Elsewhere Pavel Eljanov took clear first place in the Amsterdam Chess Tournament, Konstantin Sakaev in the Politken Cup and Pentala Harikrishna in the Sanjin Hotel Cup.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The Maccabiah games took place in Jerusalem, July 10th-20th 2005. An Invitational Tournament (over 2500 Elo Rating) included GM Smirin Ilia, GM Najer Evgeniy, GM Felgaer Ruben. The Category 15 event saw Evgeniy Najer take the gold medal Ilia Smirin the Silver after the finished joint first on 3.5/5. It seems they drew lots for the medals. I got games from the wrong event last week this finished with Yaacov Zilberman winning with 8/9. Quite a few games missing from this event.

Sami Hämäläinen reports: The 15th Heart of Finland Open 2005 Jubileum tournament was played in Jyväskylä, Finland, on July 18th-24th. The event was won by Estonian grandmaster Mihail Rytshagov with a score of 8,5/10. Another undefeated player was the rating favourite Russian grandmaster Vladimir Belov, who took the second place half a point behind the winner. Finnish international master Sampsa Nyysti took the bronze medal with 7,5/10. He also made his second grandmaster norm. Along with Nyysti the grandmasters Popov, Solozhenkin, Nybäck and Külaots ended up with 7,5 points. WFM Manuela Schmitz won the women's group with the result of 6/10. There were 146 players from 10 countries. One interesting thing was that this was probably the first time in chess history when the top boards of each round were broadcast live to mobile phones. Games will follow.

The 2005 Irish Chess Championship was held in Dublin July 9th-17th 2005. The nine round event featured the welcome return of Irish international Colm Daly who was formerly in dispute with the governing body of chess in Ireland [ICU] has resolved his differences and went on to win the event with a convivncing score of 8/9. This will also see him return to playing for Ireland again at the 2006 Turin Olympiad after a noticable absence from the last two Olympiads, as one of the perks of winning the tournament was/is an automatic place on the 2006 Irish Olympiad Team. This was his fourth time winning the event [98, 99 being the other two] but only his third time winning the title of Irish champion owing to losing out on tie break in 1996. Runner up and second seed Stephen Brady was also impressive with a score of 7/9 that will see him also gain FIDE rating points. News: Martin Crichton.
