My thanks to Jürgen Daniel, Olivier Breisacher, Roberto Alvarez, Spiros Ilandzis, Yannick Pelletier, Oscar de la Riva, Mihajlo Savic, Lawrence Tamarkin, Thomas Henrich, Gérard Demuydt, Laszlo Nagy, Arasu Israel Arul, Argiris Kotsis, Mark Adams, Dimitris Skyrianoglou, Tarjei J. Svensen, Goran Tomic, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Roberto Alvarez, Yin Hao, Amador de la Nava, Jeff Mallett, Milen Petrov, Milan Ninchich, Ian Rogers, Douglas Bryson, Micah Hughey, Hector Walsh, Georges Bertola and everyone else who helped with the issue.
The main event was the conclusion of the Dortmund tournament and the surprise win by 19 year old Arkadij Naiditsch. The favourites Topalov, Leko, Kramnik, Svidler and Bacrot all struggled to find their best form. Kramnik in particular seems to be in crisis. This is another huge edition, I even left some material for next week. We're really into the chess summer of 2005.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The Dortmund Sparkassen Chess Meeting took place 8th-17th July 2005 (rest day 13th) in the Civic Theatre. The shock winner was local player 19 year old Arkadij Naiditsch. He finished in clear first half a point clear of Topalov, Bacrot, Van Wely and Svidler. In spite of finishing in second Topalov lost rating points but not as many as the bottom five in the field. Vladimir Kramnik is obviously not going to recapture his form anytime soon and was defeated in the final round to finish on 50%.

This years Scottish Chess Championships, held in Oban High School from the 2nd to 10th July, were dedicated to the memory of Oban businessman Alan Murphy who passed away in late November last year.
The event was won comfortably by Jacob Aagaard with a score of 8/9. However, Jacob does not yet satisfy the residential requirements necessary to win the title. The competition for the title between the other entrants was very much a battle of youth over experience. After a tense final round Craig Pritchett became the 2005 Scottish Chess Champion.

Spiros Ilandzis reports: The 34th Greek Team Championship took place July 4th-11th 2005, at the resort of Ermioni in Peloponnese, in southern Greece. Apart from the top Greek Players [GMs Kotronias (2587), Papaioannou (2578), Mastrovasilis D. (2563), Banikas (2548), Halkias (2548), Nikolaidis (2522), Grivas (2515), Mastrovasilis Ath. (2495) and Skembris (2436), IM Vouldis (2524), IM Tzermiadianos (2447), WGMs Dembo (2428), Botsari (2297), Makropoulou (2287) and Kouvatsou (2208)], several top-GMs were also included in the line-up: Azmaiparashvili (GEO, 2672), Volokitin (UKR, 2671), Navara (CZE, 2663), Avrukh (ISR, 2652), Socko (POL, 2615), Gustafsson (GER, 2614), Asrian (ARM, 2611), Izoria (GEO, 2606), An. Sokolov (FRA, 2603), Macieja (POL, 2593), Rozentalis (LTU, 2567), Chuchelov (BEL, 2562), Solak (YUG, 2557), Bojkov (BUL, 2522), Svetushkin (MDA, 2514), WGM Trabert (GER, 2291), WIM Bosboom-Lanchava (NED, 2363) etc. - the ratings are these announced by FIDE on July 1st
It is considered to be one of the most exciting championships in Europe,. There were 16 teams participating (the last three were relegated to B division) and they played in 12 boards: Men in the first 5, a lady on 6th, girls (under 18 and under 14) on the 7th and 8th and boys (U-18, U-16, U-14 & U-12) on the 9th-12th. Two foreigners were allowed to every team. The games were being held on a daily basis, July 4th to July 11th.
During 9 tense rounds, the main favourites (title-holders of Kydon Hania, S.O. Kavalas and E.S. Thessalonica) vied for the top-places. Finally, S.O. Kavalas won the gold medal, with 16 p. (8 wins, one loss to Kydon Hania, in the last round). The strongest players of the team were An. Sokolov, Kotronias, Halkias, Skembris, Markidis and Botsari. The team of E.S. Thessalonica (featuring Avrukh, D. & Ath. Mastrovasilis and Tea Bosboom-Lanchava) was second, also with 16 p. (8 wins, one loss to S.O. Kavalas); the fact that S.O. Kavalas had won the outright match with runners-up E.S. Thessalonica (and by a clear margin: 8.5 3.5!) decided the issue of the champion. Last years winners, Kydon Hania (the team which boasted five consecutive titles, from 2000 to 2004!) was third, with 15 p. (7 wins, one draw and one loss), despite being the only team that won against S.O. Kavalas. Top-rated players for Kydon Hania were: Azmaiparashvili, Papaioannou, Banikas, Nikolaidis and Grivas.

The Internet Chess Club (ICC), hosted a charity event featuring Viswanathan Anand. The Indian Grandmaster is a spokesperson for Vidyasagar, a non-profit organization that strives for inclusion of children with autism and cerebral palsy (http://www.vidyasagar.co.in).
ICC auctioned off ten seats in a simultaneous exhibition with Anand and the proceeds go to a wonderful charity.
The event took place Saturday, July 16th with matches beginning at 19.00 IST (India Standard Time)/9:30a.m. ET (Eastern Time). Ten winning bidders were only available to players under the rating of 2200 and they played with the black pieces. Anand will also be played 54 boards live in the city of Chennai, India at the same time.

The first ACP Tour is over. Congratulations to the winner Viswanathan Anand! The Indian star not only won by a big margin but also dominated the race thanks to an exceptional season. His 5 best results over the season bring him to 1598 points, but if we were to add the other 3 events he took part in, the total would amount to 2045 points! Second place goes to Peter Leko (1196 out of 4 tournaments), while Boris Gelfand ended up third (916 out of only 3 events). It was predicted that the tournaments taking place during the last period would somehow upset the standings. Still in the Top-8 on June 15th, Farukh Amonatov and Etienne Bacrot lost their place in favour of Teimour Radjabov and Ivan Sokolov. Thanks to his silver medal at the European Individual Championship and 432 points earned there, Radjabov jumped to 4th place. Ivan Sokolov's result was more modest, but the 63 points he got in Poland were still enough to reach place 8.
Final Standings of the ACP Tour 2004-2005:
1. Anand 1598 (5) 2. Leko 1196 (4) 3. Gelfand 916 (3) 4. Radjabov 884 (3) 5. Bologan 865 (3) 6. Kramnik 839 (4) 7. Morozevich 709 (3) 8. I.Sokolov 654 (4) 9. Bacrot 612 (4) 10. Amonatov 600 (4)
Five other tournaments were rated during this period, but they did not significantly change the standings. Congratulations to V.Anand for his win in Leon, to Z.Almasi for his victory in Paks, to V.Zakhartsov who won in Voronezh, and to K.Miton and M.Panchanathan who ended up joint winners at the World Open in Philadelphia. A special mention finally goes to Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu who won the European Individual Championship in Warsaw - Zegrze Poludniowe.
Conclusions:
This first major project of the Association has been approved and supported by tournament organizers and generated great interest among chess players. Despite long negotiations with potential partners, a sponsor for the 'Masters', the final tournament of the cycle, has not been found yet. Considering the very complicated current situation in the chess world, finding a company that would be willing to invest into a new large-scale project is no easy task. However, this quest obviously remains our priority, as well as the development of the whole ACP Tour project.
The second ACP Tour started on the 1st of July 2005. The new Regulations are published on the ACP website. We took into consideration some of the suggestions made during the first season.
With best wishes, ACP Board
