1) Introduction

My thanks to Leonid Galperin, Matîss Sîlis, Jan Mazuch, Kaspars Migla, Lars Hansen, Vlastimil Bayer, Vladica Andrejic, Thomas Henrich, Zsuzsa Veroci, Leonid Bodankin, Sergey Bystrov, Adolivio Capece, Gary Suffield, Miklos Orso, Vesislava Tancheva, Michael Grøne Andersson, Albert Vasse, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Juan Manuel Gonzalez Jaramillo, arald Keilhack, Dimitri Komarov, Bradley Zang and everyone else who helped with the issue.

A huge week of chess, and chess issues. The Mtel Masters concluded with Vesselin Topalov taking clear first on 6.5/10 a point clear of Viswanathan Anand. On the retirement of Garry Kasparov these two look set to fight out the position of world number one (although Kasparov will take a year to disappear from the FIDE list by which time he may very well be preparing a return!). In joint last was Vladimir Kramnik. He hasn't looked well since his illness during his world title match against Peter Leko and the blunders he's been producing seem to suggest a severe lack of mental stamina and rigour. He's dropping down the rating list and needs to emerge at Dortmund having done a lot of preparation both physical and chess wise to reverse his decline at a time when he ought to be at his very best. Elsewhere the traditional Bonsia, Sarajevo tournament continues. Vassily Ivanchuk picked up a bucket load of rating points in demolishing the 40th Capablanca Memorial tournament potentially overtaking Kramnik in the rating list. The HB Global Chess Challenge was a great success with a surprise winner Zviad Izoria taking first place. Finally on the dark side the story of the Heroes of Chernobyl ficiticious tournament rumbles on. I don't think the Ukrainian's need to beat themselves up about this, it was widely reported because the attempt was so ludicrously inept that the proof of the manipulation was there to see. Its often much harder to prove, even when circumstantial evidence suggests a fix. I think its time it was tackled. I've always been comforted by the fact that thrown or prearranged games are rare at the top level (except in Olympiads when apparently its OK within the rules to agree a draw in a match, its not OK by me) but apparently Short admits in his newspaper column (see ChessBase) that he and Kasparov played one when Short was indisposed in the final round of an event (Novgorod 1997). A fairly astonishing admission to me. A pretty big week all round.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Mtel Masters

The Mtel Masters took place May 11th-22nd, 2005 in Sofia, Bulgaria. The event was a part of the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the biggest Bulgarian mobile operator(http://www.mobiltel.bg) Vesselin Topalov took clear first a point clear of Viswanathan Anand. Vladimir Kramnik finished in joint last place.

One unusual rule was that draw by mutual agreement between the players is forbidden. The players won't be allowed to offer a draw or speak to their opponent. The player can claim the draw only via Arbiter in 3 cases: A) Perpetual check B) Triple repetition C) A theoretically drawn position. Only the Arbiter can confirm the result of the game. The Arbiters will be advised by Zurab Azmaiparashvili on this. Arbiters: Chief Arbiter: Joaquin Espejo (Spain),Deputy arbiters: Boris Postovski (USA),Panaqiotis Nikolopoulos (Greece).

14) Magistral Huila 100 años - Neiva

The Magistral Huila 100 años took place in Neiva 10th-15th May 2005. Sergei Tiviakov took clear first place with 8/9. I've had to make educated guesses on three players as they weren't given FIDE identities in the listings. Alberto Rivera and Julio Espinosa I'm pretty confident on but Carlos Lopez is given as an IM from Cuba but the only player I can find even close is an FM Carlos Manuel Lopez. News: Juan Manuel Gonzalez Jaramillo.

18) More on the "Heroes of Chernobyl" tournament

Little did I know when I put a small announcement in TWIC about the "Heroes of Chernobyl" what controversy it would provoke. This is without doubt the strangest and most incompetent attempt to falsify a tournament I know of. Well before I started TWIC I knew a low ranked IM who told me of GM norms being obtained in this place or another in facticious or easily bought events, or deals agreed in the final round of Swiss system events when a player needed a result for a norm. I think its an open secret amongst professionals that these things happen. Proving these things is very hard (I well remember New in Chess and a now high ranking FIDE official disputing whether a certain event ever took place, games appearing something like a year afterwards), except if you organise an event when players are playing elsewhere at the same time, this particular falsification had no chance of working. I didn't announce it straight away after Michal Krasenkow told me one of the participants wasn't playing in the event (he was about to compete in the Polish Championship) because I was really curious to know if the organisers would continue to update the site with games right through the start of the Polish Championship. It turned out that other players had noticed they weren't playing in the event and so the organisers were tipped off. I doubt this situation will occur again because the fraud was always going to be discovered but finding the culprets may be harder, the first table from the event I received did have the names of the arbiters which I guess would be a good place to start. The Ukrainian Chess Federation asked me to only publish events they've ratified, I don't think that's the right approach, but if I publish events where there are problems or doubts anywhere in the world please let me know.

Elsewhere I've been told that there are widespread problems in Brazil with ficticious tournaments and even players. Its very hard to know the truth of this but I would be interested to know if anyone has ever played ( 2101220 Hiderick, Paulo Neek BRA 2245 0 23.06.1964 i 2104610 Sonza, Othon BRA 2120 0 . . i ) who its alleged have never been seen at the board. It may be something I return to. I wouldn't imagine Brazil and Ukraine are even close to being the countries with the biggest problem in this regard. The major problem is that FIDE (and I sympathise with them in this) don't know how to prove or punish these cases. I'm frequently told by one of my major contributers of an arbiter who was caught fixing a tournament yet wasn't banned for life and indeed is still an important chess official. Perhaps banning people who are caught would be the starting point. In the end arbiters are the major safe guard against fraud. Another measure they could introduce is a specific FIDE official whose proberty is universally recognised who could be contacted by people whose names appear in events they didn't play in. My feeling is that in many Federations there is no such place to do so.

Below are a couple of letters about the Heroes of Chernobyl event one from the Ukainian Chess Federation president and the other from Dimitri Komarov who is attacked in the letter.

Nigel Short wrote a chess column on the subject given at: http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=2406

The Ukrainian Chess Federation President V. Petrov "On falsifiers and their accomplice"

Ukrainian Chess Federation in English: http://mirror01.iptelecom.net.ua/~chessfed/index_e.html

Can you imagine leader of Ukrainian chess Vasiliy Ivanchuk losing an "agreed game"? Of course, no! While his devotion to chess leaves no place for doubt. And though people like Vasiliy constitute the majority, there are still "masters" of another kind - masters of cheating and falsification. In the last decades, when FIDE made requirements to the high titles’ owners more liberal and it turned out it was not always justified, a number of machinators increased. Now, FIDE attempts to stop the "cloudy tide" and extremes also happen from time to time when honest players come under suspicion.

However, it would not be right to pretend that nothing like this could happen in Ukraine and that is why in the years 2002 and 2003 CFU Executive Committee adopted decisions aiming to introduce order in this sphere. But the recent scandalous case brought our attention to the problem of obtaining dubious results and titles again. An attempt to falsify not only separate games but the whole international tournament had been suppressed.

It started at the UCF Executive Committee session (April 14th,, 2005) where we learned about TWIC announcement of the "The International Chess GM Tournament Memorial Heroes of Chernobyl" opening on April 15th in Slavutich city. The fact that this tournament had not been registered and some other details were suspicious. Right from the session a telephone call to one of the participants, residing in another city, was made and he honestly replied he was at home. Which made us submit an official inquiry and get an official reply stating there were no chess tournaments in Slavutich at the time at all! On April 19th, a real international tournament was opened in Kiev, among participants we could see Chohonelidze, who was mentioned as a "Memorial" participant. In the meantime, a pseudo-tournament table in Internet was regularly updated with new pseudo-results. Of course, we informed TWIC about it and learned from its editor, that he had been already warned by M.Krasenkov, that one of Slavutich "heroes" was playing in the Polish tournament at that time.

Obviously, we came across an open and shameless falsification. The investigation is being held with the purpose to find out what participants and judges conceived and realized the idea and whose names where just used by machinators. And now I would like to draw your attention to the following. Could it happen if UCF Qualification Commission - Chairman M.Seleznev was really standing guard over lawfulness and morals? What they needed, in fact, was only to observe the above-mentioned Executive Committee decisions. Moreover, M.Seleznev withdrew from this incident investigation. It looks like honesty of Ukrainian tournaments is more important for polish grand master M.Krasenkov than for UCF Qualification Commission Chairman. Which makes us think M.Seleznev must report on Commission activity at the nearest session of the Executive Committee.

My basic question to the direct organizers is: Did not you understand what a sin you were committing thus humiliating memory of the numerous victims and real heroes of that terrible catastrophe? How cynical was your thirst for ratings and titles? Some have already denied their involvement, said they knew nothing. It could also be, so, I repeat: we continue investigation. Many of us are eager to learn how will grand master D.Komarov explain his name appearance in the pseudo-tournament table, while his remarks that he was ignorant could hardly be serious: A person who publishes as a chess observer of a serious newspaper simply must analyze all news on a daily basis. It is not likely, he could be unaware of anything like this… Or was he "aware"? Knowing Mr.Komarov as an author of articles passionately calling to morality in chess, we request him to make clear his role in this unseemly story.

I would like to warn all chess schemers: do not play with fire - UCF Management will suppress all attempts of falsifications.

Dimitri Komarov replies

I didn't know anything about this tournament. In the same time I bought new appartment and spent a lot of time to prepare all necessary documents. Also I must prepare to my wedding on 15 of June (with Ruslan Ponomariov as friend and guest). But I don't want explain for everybody my familial situation. My photo on the site http://chess-ukr.narod.ru/ taken from site of tournament in Reggio Emilia 2003/2004. Also where are many photo's of the chesslayers who didn't play in this tournament (GM's Baklan, Kruppa, Zontah, Vysochin, Malakhatko, Gofshtein...). I don't want explain this situation to Mr. Petrov. Mr. Petrov continues strongly attack his World Champion Ruslan Ponomariov. Mr.Petrov clearly supported FIDE's position in his conflict with Ruslan. I don't recognise Mr. Petrov as the president of the Ukrainian Chess Federation. But if any chess journalists and members of the Chess Player Union ask me I will answer to all of them. Sincerely Yours, GM Dimitri Komarov from Sofia Chess Tournament
