My thanks to Irina Yakovich, Vesislava Tancheva, Gaguik Oganessian, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Stefan Loeffler, Ilgar Badjarani, Miklos Orso, Mirjana Medic, Axel Fritz, Frank Berry, Jakub Fuksik, ZF, Olivier Breisacher, Arthur Brameld, Alex Brunetti, Sami Hämäläinen, John Robinson, Thomas Ducret, Nick Barnett, Allan Herbert, Massimo Megale, Thomas Henrich and everyone else who helped with the issue.
The 40th Capablanca Memorial is underway with Vassily Ivanchuk as the leading player. There have been some fantastic editions of this event with many World Champions competing in the 1950s and 1960s. The event isn't quite as important now but they still get interesting fields and this year its up to Category 15. Bremen rather surprisingly took the German League title in spite of being outrated in their playoff match against Porz. This week the Mtel Masters starts. The event takes place 12th-22nd May 2005 in Sofia, Bulgaria. There is a strong field with Anand, Topalov, Kramnik, Ponomariov, Adams and Polgar competing.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

Porz and Werder Bremen played off for the title on Sunday May 8th 2005 after they finished level and Bremen won the title for the first time winning the match 4.5-3.5.
Stefan Loeffler reports: Werder Bremen has crowned a sensational season in Bundesliga with a 4,5:3,5 victory over last year´s champion SG Porz. It was a tie-break match after the regular 15 games had ended in a dead race for first place. The tie-break was played in the VIP lounge of the Werder Bremen football stadion. In spite of lagging by 60 rating points on average on each of the eight boards Werder claimed the match by two wins (Tomy Nyback and Zahar Efimenko) against only one win for Porz (Ivan Sokolov). A factor may have been youth: While Porz sported a team of roughly 40 years on average, Werder´s average age is below 30.

The South African Championships started 7th April 2005. The Men's division was won by FM Nicholas van der Nat (for the second time) ahead of Jacque Ophoff, FM Daniel Cawdery and IM Kenny Solomon. The Women's by WIM Denise Frick from WIM Janine Ellapen. The top two in the original field for the men withdrew at the last moment IM George Michelakis had a business commitment in London while IM Watu Kobese demanded too an appearance fee. WIM Cecile van der Merwe became the first woman to compete in the Men's section.
Note I altered the games section after a couple of days last week. The venue was Cape Town not Johannesberg as I had it last week.

31st Dec 2004 saw the start of the first Grandmaster tournament on the ICCF Webserver. The tournament is the "Harald Malmgren 100 years". The occasion is to commemorate the 100:d birthday of Harald Malmgren, Tierp in Sweden. Malmgren was runner up after Cecil Purdy in ICCF's first World Championship and earned his GM title in the event. Malmgren passed away in 1957. In his career he was also second in IFSB Championship 1939 and won the Swedish CC Championship in 1942. Malmgren was a true chess enthusiast and issued a book in 1953 "Mina bästa partier" (My best games) with only CC games he had played.
There are 13 participants and you will be able to follow the results on http://www.schack.se/SSKK/palview/res/malmgren.htm and as soon as about 10 moves are made in every game, SSKK will open a page for "live" games. That is games according to the ICCF CoC regulations for live games.
