My thanks to Andy McFarland, Misha Klenburg, Csaba Bognar, Steve Laios, Gary Suffield, Mikel Larreategi, Miklos Orso, Emmanuel Variniac, Stéphane Laborde, Paul Spiller, Michael Atkins, Thomas Henrich, Mark Watkins, Ching Kim Lye, Doru Ionescu, Hartmut Metz, Stellan Brynell and everyone else who helped with the issue.
Viswanathan Anand started the Amber tournament with 7/7 and although he didn't quite maintain that he only lost one game on the way to winning all the standings in the event. This is the 2nd time he has headed all the standings (the other time was 1997) and he is the only player to do it. The new FIDE rating list for April was released and perhaps this is a significant moment. Sergey Karjakin is the first player born in the 1990s to make the list. He is in Dos Hermanas and has started with 3/4. In addition to these events there has been an almost never ending supply of games this week as the Easter break has taken place world wide.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

Garry Kasparov remained as number one and gained 8 points from his victory at Linares. Anand's second in Wijk aan Zee was balanced by a disappointing Linares which left him losing a point. Vesselin Topalov confirms the feeling that but for the odd weak moment he might actually be the form player in the world rising 21 points. Peter Leko takes over from Vladimir Kramnik at number four gaining 14 points from his win in Wijk. Vladimir Kramnik lost a point at Wijk aan Zee and drops to five. Vassily Ivanchuk rises from eleven to six gaining 28 points from the Torre Memorial and Aeroflot Open. Michael Adams played Wijk and Linares losing just 4 points. Judit Polgar gained 4 points at Wijk and returns to the top ten after a years inactivity. Etienne Bacrot remains at nine but needed to gain the 16 points he did to do so. Peter Svidler lost 7 points and drops from eight to ten.
Alexander Morozevich drops out of the top ten after losing 24 points. Gata Kamsky returned at nineteen from a long period of inactivity losing 17 points in his return at the US Championship. Hikaru Nakamura gained 44 points and rose from ninety-nine to fourty-three in the world mostly from his US Championship performance. Sergey Karjakin finally makes it into the top 100 at sixty-four in the world in what no-doubt will be a long stay. Ivan Chaparinov gained 49 points to enter at 92. Nine players dropped out of the top 100 and 2615 gets you in the list as opposed to 2613.

Rod McShane Reports: Next weekend's final two matches of the 2004/5 Bundesliga season will see the closest finish for several seasons. With the leader board as follows three teams retain hopes of winning:
Table 2004-5 Round 13 Standings 1. OSC Baden-Baden 13 72,5 24:2 2. SG Porz 13 70,5 24:2 3. SV Werder Bremen 13 65,5 24:2
In fact the two favourites throughout the season have been SG Porz, who can field Adams, Lutz, van Wely, Sokolov, Vaganian and Beliavsky on top boards, and OSC Baden-Baden who have Anand, Svidler, Shirov and Vallejo. At top strength both teams can turn out full teams rated above 2600. The two teams face each other in Sunday's final match.
The present champions Porz might have been expected to retain their title, but for their shock defeat last month by SV Werder Bremen. The match went 6-2 in favour of Bremen with not a single win for Porz. In fact, Bremen having developed the knack of winning their matches by small margins, often 4,5-3,5 or 5-3 with few defeats. In recent seasons they have complemented their lineup of experienced gms such as Hracek, Babula, Schandorff, Pelletier and Knaak, with astute recruitment of younger players hungry for wins. Efimenko, McShane and Nyback are now all regulars for the team.
For Bremen, the best hope must be that they can win their last two matches against Wattenscheid and Solingen while Baden-Baden and Porz draw in which case they would win the league. Should two of the leading three teams have equal match points on Sunday evening under Bundesliga rules there will be a play-off for the title.
In recent seasons there has been much debate about the future direction of the league, but this season it has been as strong as ever and it remains the strongest in Europe. Cost remains the biggest obstacle to fielding strong teams, particularly with 15 matches to play in the first division. Shortly before the commencement of the 2003/4 season Lübeck, who had won the three previous seasons in a row, pulled out without any notice, leaving just 15 teams. This was the second occasion this had happened in the last five years, and it adds to teams' expenses as it means there are always two teams having to travel to play just one match on a weekend.
The La Roda Open in Spain took place 23rd-27th March 2005. Oleg Korneev won the event with 7.5/9.

Gunnar Bjornsson reports: Hellir Chess Club is the current Icelandic Team Champion after a convincing victory in the national championship which ended on 4th and 5th of March when final three rounds were played. The championship started in October last year, when the first four rounds were played. At that point Reykjavík Chess Club had a 4 point lead on Hellir Chess Club and seemed to be heading towards an easy victory.
The critical round of the event was the 5th round when Reykjavík Chess Club lost to Vestmannaeyjar Chess Club, 2,5-5,5 while its only real competitor for the first place, Hellir Chess Club, beat Akureyri Chess Club, 6-2. Thereby Reykjavík Chess Club?s lead of 4 points suddenly shrunk to only half a point. The two top teams met in the following round where Hellir scored an overwhelming victory, 6,5-1,5 and in the end won the championship with a comfortable 6 point lead on second placed Reykjavík Chess Club. Vestmanneyjar Chess Club took 3rd place. Crosstables: http://www.skaksamband.com/islfel05.xls

The players on the "Rest of the World" team will vote on each move. The move receiving the most votes will be selected. Should 2 or more moves receive the same number of votes, the "Rest of the World" will be given 2 more voting days to decide between the tied moves. Participation in this event is open to all players who pay an entry fee of 5 EUR or $7.00 US dollars via their National CC Federation or the ICCF Direct Entry (DE) option. All fees collected will be transferred to the ICCF Development Fund. The money will be used primarily for development and system support of the ICCF WebChess Server. It will be possible to join the "Rest of the World" team at any stage of the game.
The games may be seen "live" by all players and other observers at http://www.iccf-webchess.com
Each player who voted for the selected move will receive 1 point per move. The player(s) with the most points at the end of the games will receive an ICCF Gold Book. The list of all entrants will be published on the ICCF webpage.
