Viswanathan Anand has made an amazing 6/6 start to the Amber tournament. Anand has done pretty well at Amber in the past but if his red hot form continues he could set all kinds of records in Monaco this time. The train-wreck which is Bobby Fischer's life after winning the World Title in 1972 continues this week. He is set to be granted full Icelandic citizenship in order to give him a serious chance of escaping deportation to the US. I kind of hope he makes it to Iceland as a trial in the US would be excruciating to watch for me but its hard to escape the thought that he has brought most of the problems on himself. He takes no responsibility for his own actions, surrounds himself with people who agree with him (and then ruthlessly disguards them when they don't) and says the most appalling things. His post-1972 life it can be summed up as "what a waste".
Hope you enjoy this issue.

Bobby Fischer's fight to leave Japan (where he had lived for a while) and not be deported to the US saw him granted Icelandic Citizenship on Friday 18th March 2005.
Fischer's passport was cancelled by the US Government and he was arrested at Tokyo's Narita International Airport on Tuesday 13th July 2004, he was trying to leave Japan for the Philippines. Since then he has been detained by the Japanese and they have attempted to deport him to the US. Fischer's supporters in Iceland where he won his world title have tried to help him. Initially given a visa to travel to Iceland and then a temporary passport neither of which proved enough for him to be released. The Icelandic Parliament committee, which deals with citizenships, decided unanimously to recommend that RJF will be granted an Icelandic citizenship. It is expected that a special bill concerning that will be passed by Althingi on Monday. Fischer's supporters hope this will lead to his release and allow him to leave Japan and travel to Iceland. However this remains to be seen, the Japanese authorities want to deport thim back to the US. If Fischer gets a legal full passport his case will certainly be strengthened.
Fischer will be Iceland's 10th GM. However Fischer has said on many occasions he will never play real chess again although he might play his own variant of shuffle chess.

Bill Townsend reports: The US Amateur Team East 2005 took place February 19th-21st 2005 in Parsippany, at Parsippany, in central New Jersey. There were three other Amateur Team events run the same weekend in different parts of the U.S.A. (West, Midwest and South) but the East is where the Amateur Teams started thirty-five years ago, and traditionally it is much larger than the other three put together. In keeping with the trend of recent years Team East broke its own attendance record yet again with 1,205 players competing in 286 teams. This has to be the largest team tournament ever held in North America, and perhaps even the Western Hemisphere.
Just like the last two years, the tournament ended in a four-way tie at 5.5-0.5 with the final places determined by tiebreaks. In first place was "My 60 Memorable Anti-Semitic Rants," originally seeded eighth with an average team rating of 2193. The team members were: Eli Vovsha, Samson Benen, Evan Rosenberg, and Joshua Bromberg.
Second through fourth were: "UTD Orange" from the University of Texas at Dallas, "Fock Lenderman," and "Cambridge Ringers."
I should explain that the term "Amateur" is something of a misnomer: players of any rating can compete so long as the average team rating is below 2,200 USCF. There were a number of world-class grandmasters playing such as former U.S. Champions Larry Christiansen and Arthur Bisguier and even a former world champion, GM Susan Polgar. One team even featured both reigning U.S. Champions: GM Hikaru Nanmura and WGM Rusudan Goletiani played boards one and two for "San Diego Two-Step" which finished a half point out of first place with 5-1.

Yannick Pelletier reports: Linares, Poikovsky, Aeroflot Open ... the chess comunity has been spoilt recently!
All these wonderful events were also taken into account for the ACP Tour. Strangely enough their outcome did not really affect the head of the classification. As can be seen in the standings, changes rather occurred in the battle for the critical qualifying places.

The top-4 remain the same as last month. Only Vishy Anand managed to gain some points to increase his overall lead. Surpising number 5 is now Etienne Bacrot, whose Russian tour proved very fruitful. His victory in Siberia earned him 480 points and puts him 2 points ahead of Alexander Morozevich. Poikovsky's co- winner Viorel Bologan also made a big step forward as he's now spurring on 8th ranked Alexander Grischuk. As a matter of fact, Nigel Short and Sergey Karjakin are not in the top-8 any more. Indeed, Farrukh Amonatov also made a surprising jump forward thanks to his great result in the Moscow Open which was held just after the Aeroflot Open. Speaking of the Aeroflot Open, which was extremely strong, Alexander Motylev and Andrei Kharlov were the only ACP member to share 1st place there and receive 279 points. Coincidentally, Linares has also been dominated by two outstanding players who decided to stay away from the ACP, Veselin Topalov and Garry Kasparov.
The coming period will be much quieter as only three opens will be computed: the Acropolis in Athens, the Foxwoods Open, and the Neckar Open in Deizisau.
