The Linares tournament concluded on Thursday. There was an exciting finish with Vesselin Topalov catching Garry Kasparov's score in the final round (although Kasparov already knew he had won the tournament on tie-break). What followed came as a shock, at least at first. Garry Kasparov announced his retirement from chess. He said he'd planned this for some time and was determined to finish with his performances in the Russian Championship and Linares (although curiously he has since said he didn't prepare that well) proving he was still at the very top. Kasparov cited lack of goals as his reason plus increasing interests away from the board. I'm sure the idea of just playing Linares every year having won there so many times started to look unappealing and he wants to give something else a try. Kasparov's achievements will be well known to anyone who reads this magazine but the quality of his tournament (Karpov has the numbers game wrapped up) victories and the tough matches against Karpov and Anand will make him a legend forever in the game. His loss to Deep Blue made him famous to a wider public, especially in the states. The best ever? Probably, it depends how you measure these things, but by almost every measure, yes.
Kasparov has accused Kramnik of avoiding a rematch, the last target he had. Kasparov couldn't get a stable world title cycle going for the almost 10 years he tried, I don't think its fair to demand an immediate solution from Kramnik who says his aim is for a qualification system that will last. Nothing he's done has departed from that. Kasparov also refused to play in the Dortmund qualifier in 2002, an event he would have been strong favourite to win, even if he didn't like the format, the venue or the fact he had to qualify at all. He had the opportunity to write a rematch clause into the original match contract with Kramnik if he had wanted, he didn't, and to say he did Kramnik a favour by giving him the match is disingenuous, Kasparov needed a credible opponent and given Kramnik's match record at the time, I don't think he expected to lose. Finally if Kasparov's intention had been to retire after regaining the title, I don't think that would have been for the good of the game at all.
Anybody who followed Kasparov was probably going to look pale in comparison, but there is no doubt that the standard of Kramnik's chess is well below Kasparov as champion and indeed well below that which he promised when he first came on the scene. Its not that he's played terribly, just that its all been a bit worthy and cautious. Hopefully he will be able to step out of start to show some of the fire his predecessor had, but not all periods of chess history have been that exciting and we may be going through one of those.
Kasparov plans new books, new projects and most of all he wants to form an effective opposition to Vladimir Putin in Russia. In retrospect, its obvious these things were already taking over his life. Although slightly more active over the board recently, he's been a part time professional for some time. In some ways its been a miracle he's kept his standards and motivation going this long. I expect Kasparov to make headlines and give his political ambitions a real try, but I don't really see him as someone in political power in the long term, and as he himself acknowledges it may not even be possible to oppose Putin in any effective way. So whilst I'm sure he's completely sincere about retirement, I think this is going to end up being a break from chess, a little like Capablanca had between 1930-34, rather than the last we'll see of him. A break would allow him to concentrate on other interests and effectively put a line under his career so far. A return after some time would probably give him the fresh challenge he isn't getting at the moment. Who knows what the chess scene will be like in a few years. We'll have to see, he won't be getting an "I told you so" from me if it happens just relief we haven't seen the last of him because it would be a terrible waste if we don't.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

Garry Kasparov, Viswanathan Anand, Veselin Topalov, Peter Leko, Michael Adams, Francisco Vallejo Pons and Rustam Kasimdzhanov will be the 7 players at this year's event. The event takes place 22nd February - 10th March 2005. Round 1 Wednesday February 23rd 2005. For the first time most if not all the money for the players is in the prizefund instead of in appearance fees. Prizes: 1º 100.000 ; 2º 75.000 ; 3º 50.000 ; 4º 25.000 ; 5º 20.000 ; 6º 15.000 et 7º 12.500 . Rest days March 1st and 7th 2005.
Garry Kasparov, Viswanathan Anand, Veselin Topalov, Peter Leko, Michael Adams, Francisco Vallejo Pons and Rustam Kasimdzhanov were the 7 players at this year's event. The event took place 22nd February - 10th March 2005. Round 1 Wednesday February 23rd 2005. Rest days March 1st and 7th 2005.
Garry Kasparov took first place on tie-break (most wins with black) from Vesselin Topalov. Both finished on 8/12. Kasparov had a fantastic tournament, recognisably back to his best but the final round loss to Topalov certainly took some of the shine off the victory. Topalov would have won the event using normal tie-breaks like Sonnen-berger as he won their mini-match of two games. Both were ruthless against the struggling Adams, Kasimdzhanov and Vallejo. Viswanathan Anand fell away at the end getting into a lost position against Vallejo and then losing in the final round to Adams. The only undefeated player was Peter Leko but he didn't win any games either and after his win in Wijk aan Zee this was a disappointing result, he almost passed unnoticed like a ghost through the event playing very few games of any interest. He saved a lost position against Topalov in round 4. Michael Adams seemed well prepared for the event but sadly out of form for the most part. He created but didn't exploit a number of chances and would probably have been glad to get out of the event on -1 after a final round win against Anand. Francisco Vallejo Pons has made rating points on the previous occasions he's played in Linares, this year he struggled. Rustam Kasimdzhanov started the event with six straight draws showing the resourcefulness and solidity that took him to the FIDE crown but the stress of being in trouble almost every round caught up with him and he made only two further draws.
The event again showed up the difficulty of getting wins amongst the elite. There were only two decisive results amongst the top four players and one of those, Kasparov's loss in the final round, looked drawn for a long time. Kasparov and Topalov showed how it is possible for stronger players to beat the weaker and struggling players. Kasparov scored 5.5/6 and Topalov 5/6 against the bottom end. Anand and especially Leko didn't create anything like the same level of problems for these same players.

Michiel Abeln reported for TWIC on the spot in Linares. After the final round he had a final thing to report, the announcement of Kasparov's retirement.
The big news today was the start of Kasparovs press conference where he made this announcement.
Linares 2005 was his last professional tournament and today was his last professional game. He might still play some rapid chess, but just for fun. There is nothing more to achieve, he does not see any reunification coming and there no goals left.
Kasparov had planned to make this statement tomorrow at the closing ceremony but after his loss today he wanted the big words out right away.
He wanted to leave in style and not the way he was playing 6 months ago. He wanted to leave in style and prove to himself he plays better than the others. That he has proven here in Linares, today had little to do with level of the other games, he just collapsed under pressure that it was his last game.
Besides that there is nothing left to prove in the chess world, the mess of the last two years also added bit by bit to his decision. Everyone was happy when he was denied a chance to be in the world championship again. He did not hear a voice of support for him, while he still hears support for Ponomariov. After the Prague agreement there were regular disappointments for him and people were putting their own agenda first for their own good and at the expense of him. He does not want to press anyone, just live his own life now. It was a difficult process to come to this decision. He needs reasons to be so determined in his game and he is missing that now. He has not lost his passion for the game, so he will still play some chess for fun and a lot of writing. Besides Predecessors, there will be a new book at the end of the year, "How life imitates chess". This book explains how decision-making in chess can help in daily life decision-making. The book is very important to him and for a broader audience.
He will be back in Linares as a guest of honour. He feels he has been part of a growing community here. The first time here 15 years ago the city ended at the back of the hotel and now it is so much bigger.
He will spend some time on Russian politics as he believes every decent person has to oppose to the dictator Putin.
The chess world is in big crisis and he does not see any player that can make an impact like Fischer or himself. There are players like Karjakin or Carlsen but it is still too early to say anything for sure about them. The chess world needs some outstanding measures to be taken to get better again. He hopes that his departure will help in this aspect. He has taken his responsibility for his mistakes, unlike others that make up excuses and shift responsibility. He recognizes his failures and maybe because he plays such great games he is not so good at the organization part.
The first time he thought about leaving was after Dubai got cancelled, he felt he did not belong to this chess world anymore. He wanted to leave earlier, but he had accepted Linares already so for example when he wrote the letter during Corus he could not quit yet.
He felt the tournament was over after the nice win over Adams. He had no energy to fight Anand, and with that draw he realized that because of the tie-break he had clinched the trophy already. This may have been the reason for his bad play today. It was very tough to play here anyway, as every game in the second half was the last one. It was like a rocket launch, with a count down to zero. Everyday he was afraid to make a big blunder. Only today did he not think about it, and so it happened today.
He feels his best games ever are against Karpov in 1985, game 20 and in 1987 game 24 and probably the best of all his games, the one against Topalov in Corus. In Linares he thinks he has played 168 games and lost 7 and won a lot more. He enjoys watching the pictures of the previous tournaments in the hotel lobby, seeing himself and Vishy with long black hair back in the old days.
