My thanks to Pascal Villalba, Sinisa Joksic, Andy McFarland, Thomas Henrich, Christophe Philippe, Olivier Deville, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr., Thorbjørn Bromann, Adam Raoof, Gilles Garrigues, Steve Laios, Nick Faulks, Pablo Sierra, Vladica Andrejic, Miklos Orso, Jörg-Dieter Meyer, Ayush Das, Laszlo Nagy, Thomas Michos, Frank Berry, Alex Baburin, Nigel Freeman, Yannick Pelletier and everyone else who helped with the issue.
The main news is the incredibly strong Aeroflot Open which is coming to the final rounds. With two rounds to go Andrei Khalov leads alone. Wednesday sees the first round of the Linares tournament. The top three finishers at Wijk aan Zee Leko, Anand and Topalov are joined by Kasparov, Adams, Vallejo Pons and Kasimdzhanov. This looks a genuinely open tournament this year. Leko's form at Wijk aan Zee makes him slight favourite but its going to be close.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

Spanish newspaper Marca is reporting that a category XXI tournament will take place in Sofia, Bulgaria (May 12th-22nd 2005) mainly organized by Veselin Topalov. Viswanathan Anand, Vladimir Kramnik, Ruslan Ponomariov & Judit Polgar have already confirmed their participation, and it looks like the organisers have invited Garry Kasparov with Peter Leko as a possible replacement.
Report: http://www.marca.com/edicion/noticia/0,2458,596499,00.html
January was an interesting month in the ACP Tour standings. The Corus tournaments in Wijk aan Zee and the Bermuda Invitational Tournament caused some important changes in the standings. Thanks to his win in the Netherlands Peter Leko moved into 2nd place of the ACP Tour by gaining 660 points. He is still clearly behind Viswanathan Anand whose second place in Wijk aan Zee helped him consolidate his lead (1406 points). Both Boris Gelfand and Pentala Harikrishna benefited a lot from their joint victory in Bermuda. The Israeli advanced to place three (916) and Harikrishna celebrated his first ACP points by jumping right behind the magic top-8. Into this group entered Alexander Grischuk. His gain of 93 points in Wijk aan Zee may look rather modest, but the Russian now occupies the 7th place of the standings (393). However the players with totals less than 400 points are extremely close to each other, as can be seen in the current standings at http://www.chess-players.org/eng/tour/standings.html
The result of the Third Gibtele.com Chess Festival in Gibraltar hardly changed anything in the ACP Tour as all five winners are not ACP members. The coming month is full of interesting events. Both closed tournaments "XXII Torneo Ciudad de Linares" and "Karpov Tournament" in Poikovsky will be the highlights of this period. There will be another A category event taking place, the Aeroflot Open in Moscow, as well as the strong open in Cappelle la Grande.

The Indian Chess Federation's General Assembly meeting was held in Chennai on 19th Feb 2005. The AICF President Mr.N.Srinivasan has attempted to resolve a number of other issues.

In an interview with Yuri Vassiliev for Sport Express (http://www.sport-express.ru) FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov says he hasn't given up on the idea of reunification and in particular holding a match in Turkey. This follows Kasparov's January 18th declaration that he is withdrawing from the process and other responses around that time from the ACP and Kramnik that they regard the process as dead.
