Garry Kasparov says he "completed his collection" by winning the Russian Championship in Moscow. He also put an end to a lean period without a tournament win and will keep his number one FIDE rating in January and in fact probably some time longer with this performance. This could be the start of a new phase in Kasparov's career. Kasparov hasn't been able to overpower players he was hitherto expected to beat with opening preparation and precision (his preferred method recently) for some time probably indicating better standards by his opponents in the former and a decline in his own abilities for the latter. However he does have a tremendous understanding of the game and he played a lot messier and unclear positions in Moscow for the first time in a long time and this proved to be very successful. He isn't the only one with these problems, I'd almost forgotten what a sharp player Kramnik could be until he had to throw the kitchen sink at Leko in the final games of his match in Brissago. The pressure is now on Kramnik to show something in Wijk aan Zee and safety first draw in hand play won't do it if he wants to win that event. There is a political battle on, about World Championship titles, legitimacy and who will get to run the event in the future, where achievements over the board are currency and Kasparov has banked quite a bit. If Kasparov gets to be FIDE Champion by beating Kasimdzhanov this will intensify. Kramnik needs to understand that his withdrawal from the Russian event, nomatter how legitimate they were, went down extremely badly with almost every chess fan I've talked to. They're listening to Kasparov's accusations that Kramnik is afraid of Kasparov and doing everything to avoid playing him. In addition they're looking at his tournament record and rating and not being that impressed. Kramnik needs assert his authority over the board, and Wijk is the place he has to do it. Mind you, isn't delivering when you have to what sport is about?
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The Russian Championship took place November 14th - 27th 2004 in the hotel Russia. The prize fund was $125,000 with $50,000 to the winner (paid in rouble equivalent). The all-play-all event saw Garry Kasparov, Alexander Morozevich, Alexander Grischuk, Peter Svidler, Evgeny Bareev, Alexey Dreev, Vitaly Tseshkovsky, Alexander Motylev, Vladimir Epishin, Artem Timofeev and Alexey Korotylev compete. After a slow start Garry Kasparov dominated the event winning 5 and drawing 5 which will increase his rating. This is his first tournament victory for a couple of years and it was a fine one leaving him 1.5 point clear of Alexander Grischuk. This was obviously a major mission for Kasparov who had never won the Russian title (his own words although he had a couple of shared firsts in the Soviet Championship and hadn't previously played in a Russian only event).

The 2005 Chessmaster US Championships takes place November 23rd - December 5th 2004 in San Diego, California. Gata Kamsky finally returns to rated chess and is the top seed but still seems pretty rusty after a number of New York Masters rapid play appearances and so far has three draws and a win. Alexander Stripunsky, Hikaru Nakamura and Sergey Kudrin lead the event.

The Hastings Premier and Challengers are combined into one knockout tournament. Let us imagine 120 players enter for the event which finishes 6 January. Then 60 players go forward from the first round, with 4 lucky losers. These 64 players play a second round of knockout. The 56 losers play in the Challengers Swiss. The 64 players continue in one game knockouts until there are 8 players left. These 8 play in the Premier of 2 game knockouts. All players knocked out will be contracted to play in the Swiss Challengers, except for the losing finalist. Players when knocked out will carry forward their score in the standard play games. Of course White would have been a big advantage. There was an error earlier. The games will be played with White having 70 minutes and Black 90 in which to make the first 40 moves. Then each player will receive an extra 20 minutes for all the moves. There will be an addition of one minute per move cumulatively from the first. Where games are drawn, ties will be resolved first by blitz games, failing that an Armageddon play-off. Players will be able to gain title results from either event. The event will be part of the Association of Chess Professionals GP and the BCF GP. The weekend tournament takes place 7-9 January. Miroslav ("Miro") Radojcic who died in 2000 was one of Yugoslavia's most renowned political journalists for their paper Politika. During the 1960s he worked out of the UN in New York as Politika's foreign correspondent to the US, and later in the 1970s he was assigned the same post for London. But he was also a popular figure in the chess arena, both as a player (he was a Yugoslav National Master) and writer on chess, including a long- running column in the American magazine Chess Review titled,
Bruce Monson bamonson@pcisys.net is writing a book with Yugoslav author Dimitry Bjelica on a book commemorating Radojcic's life and hopes that people who knew Miro will read about this effort on TWIC and contact him with information they may have about him, particularly unusual or funny stories, witty quotes, or other interesting anecdotes.
All those who have something to offer will receive mention in the credits, and those who have substantive material to offer (e.g., extended or multiple narrative accounts, scans of photos and other Radojcic-related memorabilia, etc.) will receive a free copy of the book.
