1st Alushta Autumn 2004 tournament took place 28th August - 7th September 2004. Mark Paragua won the event with 11.5/15 a point clear of Roman Ovetchkin and Yuriy Kuzubov. News: Leonid Galperin.
Yuriy Kuzubov (born 26.01.1990) made a final GM norm at the age of 14 years 7 months, 12 days the 8th youngest in history. Kuzubov played in the Ukrainian Championship and defeated the record holder Sergey Karjakin. He went on to the first Autumn Alushta Tournament where he finished 2nd= to earn his final norm.
Bobby Fischer held the record for youngest Grandmaster at 15 years, 6 months, 1 day for 34 years until his record was broken by Judit Polgar. Fischer's record is still perhaps the most impressive as his GM title came when he became a World Championship Candidate and entered the elite of World Chess, the standards for the GM title have been watered down so much that it is now probably equivalent to the old IM title (not least because of rating inflation). Nevertheless almost every one of the young players to get the title has gone on to be successful at the top of the game.
However it should also be observed that the top three for many years earned their GM titles later. Garry Kasparov was aged 17, Viswanthan Anand aged 18 and Vladimir Kramnik aged 17. The old Soviet system that Kasparov and to a certain extent Kramnik were trained under didn't make the early title a priority. In fact they made a policy of holding their best players back from top competition until they were really ready (Karpov was 19 before becoming a GM and then almost immediately a top player, the same with Boris Spassky who was also 18).

Kevin Spraggett dominated the field at the 2nd annual Abe Yanofsky Memorial Tournament in Winnipeg, Canada, winning first place and $1,500 with a score of 5.5 out of 6. Canada's top-rated grandmaster never budged from top board as he methodically worked his way to the win. Even in positions which seemed fairly level, he found ways to create winning chances. His only draw was against fellow grandmaster Dimitri Tyomkin. Tyomkin took second place with 5 points. He might have tied for first, but was forced to concede a draw to 14-year-old Trevor Vincent in the second round. Trevor also drew a grandmaster in last year's Yanofsky Memorial (Helgi Olafsson). Sharing third place were Micah Hughey of Alberta and Fletcher Baragar, Jeff Babb and Jay Khedkar of Winnipeg, all with 4.5 points. Tyomkin and Spraggett both travel to Europe this month to prepare for the Olympiad, where they will play on the Canadian team. News: Cecil Rosner.

The America's Foundation for Chess (AF4C) has announced the 2005 US championship wild card selections. The event takes place November 25th - December 5th 2004 but is the 2005 Championship in order to get the US Chess Federation out of a jam over women's Olympiad selection which meant they have already organised a special women's championship with the sole idea of deselecting Anna Hahn from the Olympiad team.
As last year to promote US chess juniors one wild card spot has been offered to 14 year old Salvijus Bercys who is the #1 US rated player under the age of 16. With so many other top juniors having earned qualifying places the AF4C was in a position to recognise the return of Gata Kamsky to active tournament chess, and offer him the second wild card spot. Gata Kamsky is America's highest rated USCF chess player, and one of the top rated players in the world. With the completion of his formal education, Kamsky has returned to chess, is a regular player at the New York Masters and is anxious to participate in the US Championship. As the only American to become the official challenger for the World Championship since Bobby Fischer, Gata is a most deserving contender for the US Championship. His omission at a time that he is actively playing chess would have been a serious oversight.
The chairman of the selection committee was AF4C co-founder and board member, Dr. Jim Roberts, and committee members were GM Yasser Seirawan, AF4C president Erik Anderson and chess journalist John Henderson.
This will be the fourth year that AF4C has hosted the annual tournament and its first year doing so in conjunction with the NTC Foundation. The title sponsors will be Chessmaster.

The first Regular Season of the ICCF Champions League will start on 1st November, 2004.
The ICCF Champions League is a continuous Email Team Tournament. It is played in seasons and comprises several divisions with promotion and relegation. All games are ICCF rated. Depending on the final number of teams in each League, each player would normally play 10 games.
A Qualification season started in 2002. Teams in that season have been divided into 4 Leagues with "A" being the highest. Top scoring teams will move up a league in the following season and the lowest scoring teams will move down
This season only, there will be a "Fast Track" open to any returning team or new team (see also FAQ 31) who wishes to enter here. The maximum number of Fast Track teams accepted for the 2004-2006 season is 44. If there are more than 44 team requests, only the teams with the highest average ratings will be included in the Fast Track. The rest of the teams will be included as follows: - returning teams will play in the leagues they qualified for, - new teams will play in League D.
Every 4 player team may consist of players from 1 or more countries. A player can play only for one team in a season. Players should be members of an ICCF national federation member. The team must choose a name and a Captain, preferably one familiar with ICCF email rules.
Entries are due by 15 September 2004. Fee for teams entering via National Federations is CHF 40 or equivalent in the national currency, for those entering via the Direct Entry facility (see FAQ) is USD 50 per team. You must include Team name, Captain name, players' names, their countries and their email address with the entry fee. The Team Captain is responsible for collecting the money and sending in the entry form.
A Prize Fund of approximately $5000US will be divided among the top teams in each league, the best new players, and for the best game.

The 2004 (45th annual) US Armed Forces Open (USAFO) Chess Tournament will be held from Saturday October 9 to Monday (Columbus Day) October 11, 2004 at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.
This year the event has been opened up to any chess players from around the world who are in a military status (active, reserve, retired, national guard, militia, cadet, midshipman, or their national equivalent). The event is also on the World Chess Federation calendar. The organisers would love to see one or more players from the UK show up this year.
Military chess players from all nations of the world are cordially invited. The US Department of State told the organisers that there are no restrictions on whom they may invite. To speed up the visa application process [for those nations who do not have a "reciprocal no visa agreement" with the US], the event is on a special list of approved events at all U. S. consulates and embassies around the world.
The superb venue this year is at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. So far, players from India, Macedonia, Israel, Malaysia and Greece have indicated their intent to participate. There is the hope many other nations will also attend. So far the strongest military player that may compete is GM Efstratios Grivas (ELO 2520) from Greece, who is an instructor at the Hellenic Army Academy in Attica, Greece near Athens.
The entrance fee is free. Registration is via e-mail using the form provided on the website.
