1) Introduction

My thanks to Mogens Nielsen, Toni Ayza, Thomas Henrich, Guenter Schuhmacher, David Cohen, Mikhail Golubev, Hassan Khaled, Biro Sandor, Laszlo Nagy, Elie Houlichian, John Fernandez, Bharat Singh, Carsten Hensel, SS Quah, Roman M. Parparov, Stewart Reuben, Oskun Anar, Andy McFarland, Mehrdad Pahlevanzadeh, Kaspars Migla and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Anand led the Sao Paulo Rapid when I left it last week. He finished the event with 4/4 to take the 10 round event by a full three points. This underlines his great skill at this sort of event. Joel Lautier won the French Championship and Vassily Ivanchuk didn't win the Ukrainian Championship which continues into the semi-finals without him after he was eliminated by Oleg Romanishin. That event saw 14 year old Yuriy Kuzubov beat 14 year old GM Sergey Karjakin in what seems like almost a production line in the Ukraine at the moment, there are also two teenagers (Volokitin and Korobov) in the semi-finals.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Sao Paulo Rapid

The Sao Paulo Rapid took place 20th-24th August, 2004. This event was part of celebrations of the 450th Anniversary of Sao Paulo. Viswanathan Anand confirmed his position as the best rapid player in the world by almost casually demolishing this category 16 field finishing 3 points clear. Anatoly Karpov was not in good form and didn't manage 50%.

ICCF Champions League

The first Regular Season of the ICCF Champions League will start on 1st November, 2004.

The ICCF Champions League is a continuous Email Team Tournament. It is played in seasons and comprises several divisions with promotion and relegation. All games are ICCF rated. Depending on the final number of teams in each League, each player would normally play 10 games.

A Qualification season started in 2002. Teams in that season have been divided into 4 Leagues with "A" being the highest. Top scoring teams will move up a league in the following season and the lowest scoring teams will move down

This season only, there will be a "Fast Track" open to any returning team or new team (see also FAQ 31) who wishes to enter here. The maximum number of Fast Track teams accepted for the 2004-2006 season is 44. If there are more than 44 team requests, only the teams with the highest average ratings will be included in the Fast Track. The rest of the teams will be included as follows: - returning teams will play in the leagues they qualified for, - new teams will play in League D.

Every 4 player team may consist of players from 1 or more countries. A player can play only for one team in a season. Players should be members of an ICCF national federation member. The team must choose a name and a Captain, preferably one familiar with ICCF email rules.

Entries are due by 15 September 2004. Fee for teams entering via National Federations is CHF 40 or equivalent in the national currency, for those entering via the Direct Entry facility (see FAQ) is USD 50 per team. You must include Team name, Captain name, players' names, their countries and their email address with the entry fee. The Team Captain is responsible for collecting the money and sending in the entry form.

A Prize Fund of approximately $5000US will be divided among the top teams in each league, the best new players, and for the best game.

Details in FAQ at: http://tables.iccf.com/email/ChLeague/2004/season1faq.htm Entry from at: http://tables.iccf.com/email/ChLeague/season1form.htm Rules and information about ICCF at http://www.iccf.com

45th US Armed Forces Open

The 2004 (45th annual) US Armed Forces Open (USAFO) Chess Tournament will be held from Saturday October 9 to Monday (Columbus Day) October 11, 2004 at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.

This year the event has been opened up to any chess players from around the world who are in a military status (active, reserve, retired, national guard, militia, cadet, midshipman, or their national equivalent). The event is also on the World Chess Federation calendar. The organisers would love to see one or more players from the UK show up this year.

Military chess players from all nations of the world are cordially invited. The US Department of State told the organisers that there are no restrictions on whom they may invite. To speed up the visa application process [for those nations who do not have a "reciprocal no visa agreement" with the US], the event is on a special list of approved events at all U. S. consulates and embassies around the world.

The superb venue this year is at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. So far, players from India, Macedonia, Israel, Malaysia and Greece have indicated their intent to participate. There is the hope many other nations will also attend. So far the strongest military player that may compete is GM Efstratios Grivas (ELO 2520) from Greece, who is an instructor at the Hellenic Army Academy in Attica, Greece near Athens.

The entrance fee is free. Registration is via e-mail using the form provided on the website.
