The main event of the week is the rapid tournament in Sao Paulo as part of the 450th anniversary of the city. Viswanathan Anand is the clear leader with 4.5/6 a point and a half of the field. Anatoly Karpov is pretty much out of the running after a very slow start. Elsewhere the national championships of Spain, France and the Ukraine are in various stages of completion.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

Sinisa Joksic reports: The 3rd Davos Open which took place July 31st - August 8th 2004 surprised players and everybody with the new Congress Center as the venue. Without doubt, it's one of the most beautiful playing rooms for chess. Davos is well-known tourist place, both winter and summer, popular congress and meeting place, varied profession, for sure open door for the chess event. Davos has particular micro-climate very convenient for chess (and all others!). So, it wouldn't be surprising, if become, with the new playing room, attractive for chess competition. Adam Horvath started very well and finished just defending first place. Cherniaev did not want to risk anything. Matthew Turner made few draw at the beginning and could not recuperate. Anyhow "Bucholz" decided the winner. The best Swiss player was Hugentobler. Best Lady Elena Sedina, best senior Horst Zesinger. In tournament were a lot of interesting and good games and players really enjoy time in Davos. As Arbiter I didn't have to work hard . The Blitz tournament won Matthew Turner, second was Vulevic, third Habibi. Next, 4th Davos Open will be from July 30 to August 7, 2005.

The 91st Smith & Williamson British Championships took place 1st - 14th August in the Spa Complex, Scarborough,Yorkshire. Jonathan Rowson dominated throughout and even though a loss to Peter Wells in round 8 put his victory in doubt allowing the field to catch him he was always likely to have an easier run in than his rivals. Rowson became the first Scottish player to win the British Championship since RF Combe in 1946. All games from the final round now available.

The 30th edition of the Open Dutch Youth Chess Championships, the Stork tournament, was played in the Townhall of Hengelo, the Netherlands 9th-14th August 2004. I gave the games last week.
A couple of extra points from last week. Star player was the World and European Champion U 14, Sergei Zhigalko from Belarus. In both championships he was ahead of players like Magnus Carlsen however it was his elder (by 4 years) brother Andrey Zhigalko who won the event with 7.5/9. Sergei Zhigalko and Koen Leenhouts scored an IM norm, (Sergei's final norm and Koen's first), Bianca Muhren (already a WIM) scored her second WGM norm. Group A went to Daan Brandenbrug, proving his great form from the Dieren Dutch Open Tournament was no coïncidence.

The first Regular Season of the ICCF Champions League will start on 1st November, 2004.
The ICCF Champions League is a continuous Email Team Tournament. It is played in seasons and comprises several divisions with promotion and relegation. All games are ICCF rated. Depending on the final number of teams in each League, each player would normally play 10 games.
A Qualification season started in 2002. Teams in that season have been divided into 4 Leagues with "A" being the highest. Top scoring teams will move up a league in the following season and the lowest scoring teams will move down
This season only, there will be a "Fast Track" open to any returning team or new team (see also FAQ 31) who wishes to enter here. The maximum number of Fast Track teams accepted for the 2004-2006 season is 44. If there are more than 44 team requests, only the teams with the highest average ratings will be included in the Fast Track. The rest of the teams will be included as follows: - returning teams will play in the leagues they qualified for, - new teams will play in League D.
Every 4 player team may consist of players from 1 or more countries. A player can play only for one team in a season. Players should be members of an ICCF national federation member. The team must choose a name and a Captain, preferably one familiar with ICCF email rules.
Entries are due by 15 September 2004. Fee for teams entering via National Federations is CHF 40 or equivalent in the national currency, for those entering via the Direct Entry facility (see FAQ) is USD 50 per team. You must include Team name, Captain name, players' names, their countries and their email address with the entry fee. The Team Captain is responsible for collecting the money and sending in the entry form.
A Prize Fund of approximately $5000US will be divided among the top teams in each league, the best new players, and for the best game.

The 2004 (45th annual) US Armed Forces Open (USAFO) Chess Tournament will be held from Saturday October 9 to Monday (Columbus Day) October 11, 2004 at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.
This year the event has been opened up to any chess players from around the world who are in a military status (active, reserve, retired, national guard, militia, cadet, midshipman, or their national equivalent). The event is also on the World Chess Federation calendar. The organisers would love to see one or more players from the UK show up this year.
Military chess players from all nations of the world are cordially invited. The US Department of State told the organisers that there are no restrictions on whom they may invite. To speed up the visa application process [for those nations who do not have a "reciprocal no visa agreement" with the US], the event is on a special list of approved events at all U. S. consulates and embassies around the world.
The superb venue this year is at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. So far, players from India, Macedonia, Israel, Malaysia and Greece have indicated their intent to participate. There is the hope many other nations will also attend. So far the strongest military player that may compete is GM Efstratios Grivas (ELO 2520) from Greece, who is an instructor at the Hellenic Army Academy in Attica, Greece near Athens.
The entrance fee is free. Registration is via e-mail using the form provided on the website.
