1) Introduction

My thanks to Stephen Boyd, Harald Grafenhofer, Jovan Petronic, Laszlo Nagy, Sándor Vidéki, Thierry Foissez, Mihajlo Savic, Dario Mione, Jan Mazuch, Maung Maung Lwin, Hans Groffen, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Hugh Brodie, Jürgen Daniel, Douglas Griffin, Jason Luchan, Goran Tomic, John Fernandez, Stewart Reuben, Koos Stolk, Rob Witt, Kerry Stead, Carsten Hansen, Rod McShane, Thierry Paris, Bartlomiej Macieja and everyone else who helped with the issue.

Another busy week of chess. Alexander Morozevich won the Biel Super Tournament and with it confirmed himself as the most exciting chess player around at the moment. Morozevich is World Number Four and hasn't had much success against Kasparov, Anand and Kramnik but against the rest he is extremely powerful. His 7.5/9 will at least lift him closer in ELO terms to the top three. Viswanathan Anand completed yet another tournament win and he is probably the most successful player of the moment. The Dortmund event was a much tighter affair than Biel with many draws amongst the leading players. The fight for the event in the semi-finals and finals were only settled after rapid and even blitz games. Kramnik and Leko will have had one eye on their championship match in October but nevertheless Anand's repeated recent success in my view definitely places him as world number one right now even if not by very much.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Biel SuperGM

The Biel Grandmaster Tournament took place July 19th-29th 2004. The field was extremely impressive with last year's stunning winner Alexander Morozevich being joined by FIDE Champion Ruslan Ponomariov. Alexander Morozevich took first place for the second year running he was 1.5 points clear of Krishnan Sasikrian. Former FIDE Champion Ruslan Ponomariov finished on 4.5/10 in joint 3rd. This was the 37th Biel / Bienne Festival and it has already been confirmed there will be a 38th. There is also a correction to the game McShane - Morozevich (6).

10) Quebec Open Championship

Hugh Brodie reports: The annual Quebec Open was held in Montreal from July 17-24. It was won by the former World Championship contender, GM Viktor Korchnoi, who finished with 7.5/9 in the 67-player Open section. He gave up three draws - to IM Ronald Burnett, and GM's Alexi Barsov and Alexandre Lesiege. GM Gildardo Garcia (Colombia) finshed half a point behind. 279 players took part in all sections.

Korchnoi also took part in the 132-player blitz championship - in which he finished half a point out of first, behind GM Victor Mikhalevski and IM Ronald Burnett. A video camera trained on Korchnoi's games throughout the blitz allowed the moves of his games to be preserved.

Sunday, July 25 featured an "outdoor simul" by Korchnoi, in which he won 25 and drew 5 during four hours of play - without taking a break for food, drink, or toilet in the 25 C temperatures. Photos at: http://fqechecs.qc.ca/index.php?typ=actu&categorie=129&id=528.
