Garry Kasparov maybe World Number One, Rustam Kasimdzhanov the FIDE World Chess Champion and Vladimir Kramnik the Classical World Chess Champion but Bobby Fischer is still the most famous chess player, however sadly not for playing. Fischer once again demonstrated his iconic status with the worldwide reporting attending his detention in Japan. It seems that after 12 years the US Government are actively seeking his return to the States to face charges surrounding his match against Spassky in Yugoslavia in 1992 - Fischer's arrest followed the US Government recently revoking his passport, a passport he seems to have renewed in the late 1990s when presumably they weren't after him. Quite what they hope to gain this I don't know but it seems to be a week of tough US action against men in their 60s as they also seek the extradition of a man who went AWOL in 1965, also from Japan and it seems the cases have become linked in some way. Its difficult to see a trial of Fischer being anything other than a horrible car-wreck and I honestly wonder if he's mentally fit to stand trial.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The FIDE Championships took place in Tripoli 18th June - 13th July 2004. The time control for the first 40 moves is 90 minutes followed by 15 minutes until the end of the game with a time increment of 30 seconds per move from move one. Playoffs saw firstlya pair of rapid games (25 minutes + 10 secs a move), then if needed a pair of blitz games (5 minutes + 10 seconds per move) followed finally by a sudden death game (White has 6 minutes black Black 5 minutes, black has draw odds.).
The final match between Michael Adams and Rustam Kasimdzhanov went to a playoff as reported last week. Former number one rapid player Michael Adams was favourite going into the match but Kasimdzhanov had shown his nerve in a number of these rapid playoffs. In the first game Adams got a considerable advantage and forced Kasimdzhanov to part with the exchange for insufficient compensation. However it was tricky to realise the advantage and Adams soon went astray and got himself a worse position and ten minutes down on the clock. Kasimdzhanov pressed this advantage to victory. In game two Adams tried hard but couldn't really create anything with the black pieces. Thus the long odds Kasimdzhanov became FIDE Champion. It was a shock result and he certainly rode his luck throughout the event being only a few accurate moves from elimination on a number of occasions. Having said all that this was no great shock than say Todd Hamilton winning the Open Golf Championship this weekend ahead of a stronger field. Because of the withdrawal of number two seed Alexander Morozevich Kasimdzhanov was able to achieve something unique (as it is usually not possible) in these knockout events. He beat the top four seeds on the way to the title. 24 year old Kasimdzhanov will pick up some rating points but probably not a huge number, it remains to be seen if this is an announcement of a new talent or the highpoint of his career. The winner in Tripoli is supposed to play Garry Kasparov later in the year. It remains to be seen whether this match will go ahead, there must be a commercial value for a Kasparov match and he may need to play it to get in the game for reunification whatever the prizefund.

The Dortmund Sparkassen Chess-Meeting takes place in the Dortmund Theatre 22nd July - 1st August 2004. The event consists of Preliminary Group Stages followed by a knockout much as it was for the Candidates event in 2002. The Preliminary double round robin sees each player play 6 games. The two winners from each group will advance to the semifinals. The winners will play the final match, the losers will play the match for the 3rd place. Number 3 and number 4 in each preliminary group will play for the places 5 to 8.
The organisers are trying an experiment of charging for live coverage and have warned rebroadcasters that they will attempt to protect their live broadcasts through the courts if necessary. It remains to be seen if the law backs them up. This has never been checked in court before. Although at one time the view was live coverage was protected this view seemed to change around the time of the Kasparov - Kramnik match and a general view then was that you couldn't stop rebroadcasts. Commentators are the German Grandmasters Dr.Helmut Pfleger and Klaus Bischoff. Day-Ticket: 1 Euro per day Tournament-Ticket: 8 Euro for all 10 rounds.

The 11th World Chess Champion Robert James Fischer has been detained in Japan where he has lived for a number of years. 61 year old Fischer was stopped at Tokyo's Narita International Airport on Tuesday 13th July, he was trying to leave Japan for the Philippines. Officials were reported to be preparing to deport Fischer to the United States.
According to a strongly Fischer connected website (http://home.att.ne.jp/moon/fischer/list/p_52/52_0.htm) Fischer's passport has recently been revoked by the US Government over his 1992 match against Boris Spassky which he was warned at the time broke US sanctions. It appears Fischer is still regarded as a fugitive even though the case against him must be seen as somewhat problematic due to the length of time passed and the question as to whether playing a match can really be called trade. Not to mention Fischer's obvious mental problems. It really hadn't been clear until now that the US was pursuing the case at all.
According to the Washington Post the US has only recently stepped up efforts to track Fischer. "He's in custody in Japan, and we are awaiting a determination whether he'll be deported back to the United States to face charges," said Allan Doody, special agent in charge of the immigration agency's Washington field office.).
Fischer's more serious problem in staying in the US may be the broadcasts he gave on Philippines radio glorying in the September 11th 2001 attacks.

The 68th edition of the Costa Rican National Championship takes place 5th-22nd July 2004. After eight rounds played the IM Sergio Minero is now the leader after defeating IM Bernal González in round eight. The defending Champion IM Leonardo Valdés follows in third place with 5.5 points out of 8. MF William Charpentier and MF Mauricio Arias continue struggling for the fourth and fifth spot of the Costa Rican Olympic National Team. I give the games again as I got the venue wrong, the event is in the capital of Costa Rica San José. My thanks to Diego Redondo.

The Specsavers Opticians Young Masters will take place at Millfield School, Somerset, 19th-25th July 2004. This year's event contains a weekend tournament for young talents to gain some very useful competition, but the main section is a 45-player swiss which will give many young English players key international experience. The ten-round event offers an excellent opportunity for the eleven unrated English players to gain a full or partial FIDE rating and also for international master norms for the more experienced competitors. This year players from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Ireland and Wales compete.
