The Final of the FIDE Championship in Tripoli will be settled by playoff games tomorrow after a pretty amazing match between 32 year old Michael Adams and 24 year old Rustam Kasimdzhanov. The immediate prize is $100,000 to the winner and $70,000 to the loser. The rather more nebulous prize is a potential match against Garry Kasparov an "opportunity" that has already derailed at least a couple of careers. It sounds great but Shirov, Anand and Ponomariov have at various times found the reality somewhat less than advertised. Kasparov himself is already reported to have said that he prefers Adams as the winner as he doubts there will be money for a match against Kasimdzhanov.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The FIDE Championships take place in Tripoli 18th June - 13th July 2004. The time control for the first 40 moves is 90 minutes followed by 15 minutes until the end of the game with a time increment of 30 seconds per move from move one. If playoffs are required then firstly there are a pair of rapid games (25 minutes + 10 secs a move), then if needed a pair of blitz games (5 minutes + 10 seconds per move) followed finally by a sudden death game (White has 6 minutes black Black 5 minutes, black has draw odds.).
The final match between Michael Adams and Rustam Kasimdzhanov turned into an amazing roller-coaster ride. After a quiet draw in game one white then proceeded to win the next four games with Kasimdzhanov taking the lead and then Adams equalising twice in a row. The final game saw Adams in big trouble a pawn down albeit with bishops of opposite colour giving some extra drawing possibilities. Then Adams found an easy draw by sacrificing his bishop for perpetual check, no doubt to his great relief. However it seems that he underestimated the well known attacking possiblities of bishops of opposite colours and in fact could have won with 42...Qe4 43.Qxh7+ Kf8 44.Qh6+ Bg7 45.Qh4 Be5+ 46.f4 Qe1+ 47.Kg4 Qe2+ 48.Kg3 Bc3.

The Dutch Championships took place June 28th - July 10th 2004. Loek van Wely and Peng Zhaoqin retained their titles.
Sadly the women's championship was somewhat wrecked by the withdrawal of Desiree Hamelink due to personal circumstances and Tea Lanchava due to illness around half way through.

The Norwegian Championship took place in Molde, Norway July 3rd - 10th 2004. 9 round swiss. GM Magnus Carlsen and GM Berge Østenstad shared 1st place and will have a playoff match in the end of August to determine the winner who takes the title. Since Østenstad has better tie break points Magnus needs to win the two-game match to become the champion. Carlsen also was officially awarded the GM title on Sunday by FIDE. Note the correction to the game Agdestein - Carlsen last week which was a win for Agdestein. Carlsen will hope to become the youngest champion beating Agdestein's record of 15.
