The final of the FIDE Chess Championship will be between one of the favourites Michael Adams of England and outsider Rustam Kasimdzhanov of Uzbekistan. Adams has been as high as number four in the World and is currently 6 whereas his opponent in the final is currently 54 with a high of 21 but Kasimdzhanov has beaten Ivanchuk, Almasi, Grischuk and finally Topalov on the way to the final and so clearly can't be underestimated. They have drawn the three games they have played.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The FIDE Championships take place in Tripoli 18th June - 13th July 2004. The time control for the first 40 moves is 90 minutes followed by 15 minutes until the end of the game with a time increment of 30 seconds per move from move one. If playoffs are required then firstly there are a pair of rapid games (25 minutes + 10 secs a move), then if needed a pair of blitz games (5 minutes + 10 seconds per move) followed finally by a sudden death game (White has 6 minutes black Black 5 minutes, black has draw odds.).
The 6 game final of the FIDE Championship is between Michael Adams of England and Rustam Kasimdzhanov of Uzbekistan. Adams has progressed smoothly none of his match extending to playoffs as he beat unrated Hussien Asabri in Round 1, followed by Karen Asrian, Hichem Hamdouchi, Hikaru Nakamura, Vladimir Akopian and Teimour Radjabov. Kasimdzhanov has gone to playoffs in four of his six matches but has had a pretty tough run in of renowned players Alejandro Ramirez and Ehsan Ghaem Maghami warmed him up for Vassily Ivanchuk, Zoltan Almasi, Alexander Grischuk and Vesselin Topalov (who prior to this match had scored 9.5/10).

Only small movements in the top three players but with the Armenia vs the Rest of the World being too late to be rated the list is already out of date. Alexander Morozevich grabs the unstable 4th spot, no-one seems to have been able to consolodate this with Peter Svidler, Peter Leko and Michael Adams all being recent occupiers, Michael Adams gains 7 points to be 6 in the World, Peter Svidler lost another handful of rating points and is down to 9 incidently boosting Judit Polgar (who played no games) to 8 in the World. Alexei Shirov gains 12 points to return to the top 10.
Other big or significant movements include: Etienne Bacrot up from 27 to 14, Sergei Rubevsky up from 30 to 19, Nigel Short drops from 15 to 21, Van Wely back from 46 to 25, Emil Sutovsky up from 38 to 28, Vladimir Malakhov down from 17 to 31, Levon Aronian from 51 to 32, Predrag Nikolic, from 49 to 33, Peter Heine Nielsen up from 67 to 47, 18 year old Andrei Vokokitin enters the rating list for the first time gaining 38 points to be 2638 and World number 56, Vladimir Epishin bounces back from 96 to 58th in the World, Michal Krasenkov similarly from 97 to 63, FIDE quarter-finalist Lenier Dominguez moved from 92nd to 67th in the World, another Cuban Bruzon is back in at 69, Valerij Filippov down from 53 to 72, Kiril Georgiev down from 56 to 73, Robert Huebner is back in at 76, Alexander Goldin up from 94 to 78, Pavel Smirnov back in at 81, Zoltan Gyimesi in at 85 after gaining 56 points, Mikhail Kobalia down from 65 to 86, David Navara back in at 91, Vladislav Tkachiev down from 58 to 94 losing 20 points, Pavel Eljanov, Robert Kempinski, Jan Gustafson and Artyom Timofeev all enter or reenter the top 100.
Leaving the list include World number 61 Zhang Zhong, number 72 Alexander Shabalov, 80 Boris Avrukh, 83 Evgeny Alekseev, 87 Vladimir Baklan, 91 Semen Dvoirys and 99 Vasilios Kotronias. You had to be rated 2611 rather to be in the top 100 rather than 2606 last time. John Nunn, Giorgi Giorgadze and Julian Hodgson all drop out through inactivity.

Jeff Sonas describes his proposals for a double elimination tournament for the FIDE Championships. - Jeff Sonas on the Double Elimination Format
There are no Israeli players competing in the championship. It was thought that Vadim Milov who now represents Switzerland would play but he makes it clear that he believes that as an Israeli passport holder FIDE made sure he could not compete (letter given last week). Read letter: http://www.chess-players.org/eng/news/viewarticle.html?id=169. FIDE put the blame firmly back in Milov's court with their reply: FIDE reply to the statement of Mr. Milov dated June 25, 2004 saying that he did not provide the passport details needed by the proper deadline. Boris Gelfand has given an interview http://www.chess-players.org/eng/news/viewarticle.html?id=170 where he states that it is ridiculous that Tripoli was even chosen as the venue in the first place. Whilst FIDE are trying to say that Israeli players were not banned Gelfand bluntly states " "Israeli players are not welcome, there, okay international body, the international federation mumbled something that all the players are welcome, but it's from statements of Libyan authority, it became very clear that there is no chance." adding "I'm really disappointed that, these let's say, functionaries of international federation are taking away my chance to play for the title and to compete with the best players!"
