My thanks to Horacio Arevalo, Csaba Jergler, Emil Sutovsky, Martin Mrva, Oliver Kniest, Emil Anka, Mauro Amaral, Vladimir Dvorkovich, Miklos Orso, Leonid Galperin, Eugeny Atarov, Olivier Breisacher, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Dominique Primel, Ching Kim Lye, John Hillery, John Fernandez, George Mirijanian, Sergei Soloviov, Martin Mrva and everyone else who helped with the issue and indeed over the nearly 10 years I have been compiling TWIC.
So finally here I am at issue 500. Compiling this week's issue doesn't really feel that much different to any other week, as the only way you get to landmark numbers such as this, is one at a time. In 10 years we have seen web coverage of all top events and many lesser events become standard, if you wish to follow chess as a sport then the internet is the place to do it. I love many sports and whilst there is clearly an artistic side to chess, I like to see good games, I also like to see good tough competition. The last 10 years has seen a fractured World Championship structure. We will see the FIDE Championships in Tripoli start next week and the Kramnik - Leko match start in September. One way or another there needs to be a single unified structure which I hope won't take another 500 issues to achieve.
I thank everyone who has contributed in even a small way to the magazine. Also to Malcolm Pein and the London Chess Centre without whose sponsorship I wouldn't be lucky enough to be doing this. Here's to another 500 issues.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The second edition of the "Solingen chess weeks" was held May 28th and June 5th and consisted of the Open Solingen championship in classical, blitz and rapid chess. The "normal" open saw last years winner and top favourite IM Karl-Heinz Podzielny blundering in a drawn rook ending against the winner of German Senior Grand Prix, Boris Khanukov in the final round. Therefore the 66 years old Khanukov got the title with 6/7 ahead of Fabian Müller and FM Oliver Kniest (5,5). The Blitz championship saw GM Ulf Andersson compete. He finished with +6=9 which was only sufficient to finish 4th with 10,5/15. GM Lev Gutman got the title with 11,5, followed by the Russian Blitz specialists, Michail Saitsev and Andrei Orlov (11). Andrei Orlov won also the rapid tournament (20-minutes-games) due to his better Buchholz ahead of GM Lev Gutman. Both of them scored 6,5/9. The local players IM Bernd Schneider and IM Markus Schäfer showed impressive performances with 6 points and finished on 3rd and 4th place while other top players like GM Arkadij Rotstein, IM Gerlef Meins or IM Karl-Heinz Podzielny did not achieve the top rankings. News: Oliver Kniest.

The event is in Cleveland OH. The Cleveland Public Librarys John G. White Chess and Checkers Collection is currently exhibiting an installation titled, Worlds of Chess Champions. This temporary exhibition is located in the third floor exhibition hall of the Main Building, 325 Superior Ave., N.E. The Library exhibition is free and open to the public. Worlds of Chess Champions puts chess into context through the lives of chess experts, authors, and champions. This exhibition sets the historical stage of chess champions from the 19th Century to the present. White Chess and Checkers Collection include original manuscripts from the 16th, 17th, and 18th Centuries. Other rare and interesting items include a death mask photograph of an early 19th-century player, commemorative chess stamps, hand-written letters by and about world-famous chess champions, autographed material, and published books by chess champions.
Some of the materials in Worlds of Chess Champions have never before been exhibited. The John G. White Chess and Checkers Collection is the worlds largest and most comprehensive chess collection. The collection contains chess sets and pieces as well as material related to chess. Many stamps commemorating chess champions are in the exhibition. Newspaper and magazine clippings, chess championship programs, score sheets from games, and other rare items will be on display through June 12, 2004.
