Another good week of chess. The Amber tournament is hotting up. Alexander Morozevich is leading the blindfold tournament with some tremendous stuff half a point clear of Ivanchuk and Kramnik. Anand and Kramnik are neck and neck in the rapid tournament half a point clear of Leko. Kramnik is a point clear of Morozevich and Leko in the combined standings. Anand would have been up there too but for a 2-0 whitewash by Morozevich in round 7. Alexander Grischuk took first on tie-break from Sergei Rublevsky in the 5th Karpov tournament. The organisers hope this category 18 event will be even stronger next year.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

13th Amber Blindfold and Rapid Chess Tournament takes place in the Monte Carlo Grand Hotel in Monaco March 20th - April 1st 2004. It is sponsored by creator of the event Mr. J.J. van Oosterom. Prize-fund is Euro 193,250.
Every day the grandmasters play one Rapid game and one Blindfold game, of around one hour per game. The Blindfold games they play on a computer. For the players only an empty chess board is visible on the screen. With the mouse or the keyboard they can make a move, which will then appear on the screens of both players. After they have confirmed their move, the players see the move disappear and the clock of the opponent starts running. Various monitors in the playing room show the course of the game, which is perfectly visible for the arbiter and the audience, but not for the grandmasters. Free days: 24 March and 29 March. Play takes place 1.30-8.00 pm.

The 5th Karpov Tournament took place in Poikovsky 17th-26th of March 2004. Poikovsky is a village Poikovsky in the Nefteyugansky region, the west of Siberia. This year the average rating of the participants was 2676 (category XVIII), and the organisers promise that next year the event will be stronger.
Alexander Grischuk took first on tie-break from Sergei Rublevsky after beating Zhang Zhong. Grischuk started fast with three wins in the first four rounds. He then drew the next four including what looked like a missed chance against Joel Lautier in round 7. Games from round 9 played on the final day are missing. News Eugeny Atarov.

The Peruvian Championships took place in Lima 5th-15th March 2004. The event used, for certainly the first time I've seen it,, the double elimination method cooked up by a number of GMs as the way they want the World Chess Championships settled. A player has to lose two mini-matches to be eliminated. The winner was Carlomagno Oblitas who actually lost as early as the third round before completing the rest of the event undefeated. Karen Zapata won the women's event.
My thanks to Rafael Llanos and Alcides Diaz for information about this event

The Windesheim Open Weekender took place March 19th-21th 2003 reports Henri Spijkerman.
The 13th edition of the weekender in Zwolle, the Netherlands, was won by Dutch grandmaster Friso Nijboer. He scored five points from six rounds, sharing first prize with fellow GMs Murtas Kazhgaleyev, Vladimir Georgiev, Harmen Jonkman and American FM Emory Tate. Because of his superior WP tie-break score Nijboer was declared the winner of the tournament.
The tournament was entertaining from start till end. In the second round Arjan Smit surprisingly beat IGM Georgiev. It was generally thought that after this defeat Georgiev was down and out for a good result. Kazhgaleyev led the field with a convincing 5/5, one whole point more than his main competitors. In the final round after a long and exciting battle Vladimir Georgiev was able to beat Kazhgaleyev, thus gaining co-leadership. This outcome allowed Nijboer to win the tournament.

The annual Varsity match between Oxford and Cambridge University took place at the Royal Automobile Club in Pall Mall on Saturday 13th March 2004. The event was sponsored by Barry Martin and Henry Mutkin. Oxford were favorites this year with GM Luke McShane, IM Richard Palliser and IM Eddie Dearing on the top boards and duly won 6-2.
They also played a match a month earlier between Oxford University and Wales on Sunday the 15th of February at Keble College, Oxford. This was the second match between the teams, and there is the hope the match will become an annual tradition. Oxford had luck on their side and managed to defend the trophy by winning 6-2.
My thanks to Daniel Gunlycke for the news.

The Worlds of Chess Champions exhibition contains items including Egyptian chess pieces, commemorative stamps, autographed material, rare books and original manuscripts.
The event is in Cleveland OH. The Cleveland Public Librarys John G. White Chess and Checkers Collection is currently exhibiting an installation titled, Worlds of Chess Champions. This temporary exhibition is located in the third floor exhibition hall of the Main Building, 325 Superior Ave., N.E. The Library exhibition is free and open to the public. Paid parking is available on Rockwell, one block north of Superior Ave.
Worlds of Chess Champions puts chess into context through the lives of chess experts, authors, and champions. This exhibition sets the historical stage of chess champions from the 19th Century to the present. To illustrate the context of chess in the world, the earliest items displayed feature chess pieces from Egypt dating back to 1300 B.C. Other early items on display from the John G. White Chess and Checkers Collection include original manuscripts from the 16th, 17th, and 18th Centuries. Other rare and interesting items include a death mask photograph of an early 19th-century player, commemorative chess stamps, hand-written letters by and about world-famous chess champions, autographed material, and published books by chess champions.
Some of the materials in Worlds of Chess Champions have never before been exhibited. The John G. White Chess and Checkers Collection is the worlds largest and most comprehensive chess collection. The collection contains chess sets and pieces as well as material related to chess. Many stamps commemorating chess champions are in the exhibition. Newspaper and magazine clippings, chess championship programs, score sheets from games, and other rare items will be on display through June 12, 2004.
