13th Amber Blindfold and Rapid Chess Tournament takes place in the Monte Carlo Grand Hotel in Monaco March 20th - April 1st 2004. It is sponsored by creator of the event Mr. J.J. van Oosterom. Prize-fund is Euro 193,250.
Every day the grandmasters play one Rapid game and one Blindfold game, of around one hour per game. The Blindfold games they play on a computer. For the players only an empty chess board is visible on the screen. With the mouse or the keyboard they can make a move, which will then appear on the screens of both players. After they have confirmed their move, the players see the move disappear and the clock of the opponent starts running. Various monitors in the playing room show the course of the game, which is perfectly visible for the arbiter and the audience, but not for the grandmasters. Free days: 24 March and 29 March. Play takes place 1.30-8.00 pm.
Players: Viswanathan Anand (India) Evgeny Bareev (Russia) Boris Gelfand (Israel) Vasily Ivanchuk (Ukraine) Vladimir Kramnik (Russia) Peter Leko (Hungary) Alexander Morozevich (Russia) Alexey Shirov (Spain) Peter Svidler (Russia) Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria) Francisco Vallejo (Spain) Loek Van Wely (The Netherlands)

Tigran Petrosian Memorial Tournament 2004 takes place in Stepanakert, Karabakh March 8th-18th 2004. Total prize fund is US$12,100, with a first prize $4000. The event celebrates what would have been Petrosian 75th birthday.
The event is very diplomatically controversial. Karabakh's status is under dispute between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The Armenian Chess Federation has isolated itself from the event but did send a congratulatory letter to the players according to reports. The Georgian Federation don't wish their flag to be hung at the event: The had briefly a message on the official FIDE site which now seems to have gone. FIDE now have stated it will have no international status according to a Report from Azertag the Azerbaijan State Telegraph Agency. - according to the Armenian site http://www.armenpress.am/eng/news/sports.htm "a welcoming letter from the FIDE president, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, was read out in which he said he was convinced that the holding of the international tournament in Stepanakert will contribute to the development of the unique Armenian chess culture."
I've gone with Azerbaijan as the country in the PGN section simply as this seems to be the official FIDE line.

Bill Townsend reports:
The U.S. Amateur Team East 2004 took place from February 14th-16th at Parsippany, in northern New Jersey. There were three other Amateur Team events run the same weekend in different parts of the U.S.A. (West, Midwest and South) but the East is where the Amateur Teams started in 1970, and traditionally it is much larger than the other three put together. This year Team East broke yet another attendance record with over 1,150 players competing on 276 teams.
In spite of the large number of teams there were no perfect scores: just like last year four teams tied for first place with team scores of 5 1/2 out of six, so the top places had to be decided by number of individual games won. In fourth place with 16 games was "The Contenders" consisting of Adnan Kobas, Mitchell Goldberg, John Riddell, Shirley Ben-Dak and James Santorelli. In third, also with 16 games, was the "U.S. Amateur Training Team" led by former U.S. Champion GM Joel Benjamin on board one and current U.S. Women's champion WGM Anna Hahn on board two. John MacArthur and Deborah Quinn rounded out the rest of the team.
In second place with 18 was Collins Kids Hispanola, featuring Alexander Beltre, James Lewis, Greg Hernandez and Fritz Gaspard. The overall winner with 19 1/2 games out of 24 was "Dean Ippolito, LLC" with FM Stan Krivnetsov, IM Dean Ippolito, Mike Bernshteyn and Scott Lalli.
It may seem odd to see all these titled players listed as the winners of an "Amateur" tournament, but that just refers to the fact that the average team rating has to be below 2200 USCF. In spite of the name, these tournaments really are the U.S. team championships. Among the other titled players competing were: GM Michael Rohde, GM Arthur Bisguier, GM Ildar Ibragimov, GM Alexander Stripunsky, IM Jay Bonin and IM Larry Kaufman.
2nd Parsvnath takes place in new Delhi that has 271 participants including 10 GMs. Prominent names are Pavel Kotsur, Saidali Iuldachev, Georgy Timoshenko, Dibyendu Barua, S S Ganguly, R B Ramesh, Sandipan Chanda and Koenru Humpy.

Pavel Kotsur and Saidali Iuldachev lead going into the 9th round on 7 points.

The Worlds of Chess Champions exhibition contains items including Egyptian chess pieces, commemorative stamps, autographed material, rare books and original manuscripts.
The event is in Cleveland OH. The Cleveland Public Librarys John G. White Chess and Checkers Collection is currently exhibiting an installation titled, Worlds of Chess Champions. This temporary exhibition is located in the third floor exhibition hall of the Main Building, 325 Superior Ave., N.E. The Library exhibition is free and open to the public. Paid parking is available on Rockwell, one block north of Superior Ave.
Worlds of Chess Champions puts chess into context through the lives of chess experts, authors, and champions. This exhibition sets the historical stage of chess champions from the 19th Century to the present. To illustrate the context of chess in the world, the earliest items displayed feature chess pieces from Egypt dating back to 1300 B.C. Other early items on display from the John G. White Chess and Checkers Collection include original manuscripts from the 16th, 17th, and 18th Centuries. Other rare and interesting items include a death mask photograph of an early 19th-century player, commemorative chess stamps, hand-written letters by and about world-famous chess champions, autographed material, and published books by chess champions.
Some of the materials in Worlds of Chess Champions have never before been exhibited. The John G. White Chess and Checkers Collection is the worlds largest and most comprehensive chess collection. The collection contains chess sets and pieces as well as material related to chess. Many stamps commemorating chess champions are in the exhibition. Newspaper and magazine clippings, chess championship programs, score sheets from games, and other rare items will be on display through June 12, 2004.
