Vladimir Kramnik took clear first in the Linares tournament with a score of 2 wins and 10 draws. It marks somewhat of a recovery from his 50% score in Wijk aan Zee and afterwards Kramnik expressed his delight. The event Kramnik only played 5 games over 23 moves and said that his preparation with white wasn't very good. In second place was Peter Leko who looked for some time to be heading for first place but he switched places with Kramnik after losing to him in round 11 in what proved to be the decisive game of the entire event. In third, on the same score as Leko was Garry Kasparov. Its difficult to assess his form, he played only a couple of short draws and missed chances in three or four games. In his best form he would have won the event clearly but it remains to be seen if he can ever recapture that. Certainly he will have to play more chess, this was his first tournament since Linares last year and he seemed to lack the sharpness required. Kasparov has scored +3 -1 =20 in the last two Linares.
I would hope for a bit more boldness in the event next year and perhaps the organisers will have to look at the field and look for some known fighting players such as Morozevich, Ponomariov or Polgar.
Hope you enjoy this issue.
Mark
The 21st Linares tournament took place February 19th - March 5th 2004. The event was a 7 player double round robin category 20 event (ave 2731). Garry Kasparov (No. 1 2830) Vladimir Kramnik (No. 2 2777) Alexei Shirov (No. 5 2736) Veselin Topalov (No.6 2735). Peter Leko (No. 10 2722), Paco Vallejo (No. 33 2663) and Teimour Radjabov (No. 35 2656).
Vladimir Kramnik finished clear first with two wins and 10 draws ahead of Kasparov one win 11 draws and Peter Leko two wins one loss nine draws. There were just eight decisive games. Kasparov missed converting three winning positions including chances in both his games against Radjabov.
Ties in the event were broken by 1st most wins 2nd most wins with black 3rd results between tied players 4th elimination of results of lower players 5th blitz. All of which meant Kramnik only needed a draw in the final round which he took. It also meant Leko officially finished 2nd above Kasparov.

The Championships of the Czech Republic took place in Karlovy Vary 17th-27th February 2004. David Navara won the mens' championships with 8/11 undefeated 1.5 points clear of the field. Olga Sikorova won the women's event and Stanislav Cifka the juniors. [note the official site gives Petr imek as rated at 2254 whereas I think it has to be the younger player of the same name rated 2155]

Rod McShane reports Reykjavik, 8 March 2004.
Reykjavik´s Hrokurinn Chess Club has won the top division of the Icelandic League for the third successive season. The team finished with a massive score of 46.5/56, a full 7.5 points ahead of its nearest rival Hellir.
But the Club´s triumph in the 2003/4 season was much more comprehensive. Fielding a total of seven teams in the league's four divisions, Hrokurinn also won the second and fourth divisions by impressive margins. The Club has now acqired a total of 13 league trophies in six years.
Four of its teams in the fourth division were children´s teams. The youngest player was 5 year old Alfred B Valencia. Alfred made the headlines and, probably, the Guinness Book of Records, a week ago with his match against 103 year old Gudmundur Kristjánsson.
This season was dogged by controversy with Hrokurinn forced to mount a legal challenge to a ruling by the league´s governing body which stripped it of three of its game points from the first four matches.
Faruk Tairi who had a perfect score of 4/4 after the first weekend of the league in October was stripped of three of his points on the pretext that Hrokurinn had played with too many foreigners in its team. This left Hellir leading by just half a point after four maches. On Thursday afternoon a court announced its decision that the league´s ruling was improper under European laws. The tribunal´s decision came little more than 24 hours before the start of White´s clocks in the fifth round of the League on Friday evening.
There has been some resentment of Hrokurinn´s recent dominance of Icelandic chess. But oddly enough, it was not the Hellir team which proved the sore losers, the reason being that the two clubs, prior to the court decision, had agreed that whatever the outcome of the court case they would accept the decision with no further quarrels or media war. The silver medal winners proved gracious losers in Friday evening´s critical match. But at the prizegiving the chairman of the Reykjavik Club read out a very sour speech accusing Hrokurinn of demeaning the game by dragging it through the courts. Reykjavik had won the top trophy 15 times in a row before Hrokurinn´s first win in 2002. He announced that his players refused to accept their bronze medals. Unfortunately, the chairman of the Reykjavik Chess Club had not bothered to obtain the consent of the leading players in the Reykjavik A team before his speech. GMs Margeir Petursson and Thorstur Thorhallsson, IM Jon Viktor Gunnarson have all told personal friends at Hrokurinn that they want their medals and do not want to be seen as bad losers.
What the speech neglected to say was that Hrokurinn´s programme of strong international tournaments and chess in the schools has quadrupled the amount of chess activity in Iceland in the last three years.
This season the Iceland No. 1 Johann Hjartarson, who had been Akureyri´s top board for many years, defected to Hrokurinn. To rub salt into the wound Hjartarson, who is a leading lawyer in Reyjkjavik, successively guided Hrokurinn´s legal case through the court.
Hrokurinn now hopes that the Tairi Ruling will be accepted by the other clubs. It is certainly determined to continue with its policy of importing strong grandmasters for all kinds of activity. Whatever Reykjavik may feel, the strategy has undoubtedly had a beneficial effect on the League as a whole. Other clubs have strengthened their teams, finding the finance to bring in foreign players of their own.
Only three games available.
Division 1 Final Standings 1. Hrókurinn-A 46½ 2. Hellir-A 39 3. Reykjavik-A 38½ 4. Vestmann Islands 25½ 5. Akureyri-A 21½ 6. Hellir-B 21½ 7. Reykjavik-B 20 8. Akureyri-B 11½

The Worlds of Chess Champions exhibition contains items including Egyptian chess pieces, commemorative stamps, autographed material, rare books and original manuscripts.
The event is in Cleveland OH. The Cleveland Public Librarys John G. White Chess and Checkers Collection is currently exhibiting an installation titled, Worlds of Chess Champions. This temporary exhibition is located in the third floor exhibition hall of the Main Building, 325 Superior Ave., N.E. The Library exhibition is free and open to the public. Paid parking is available on Rockwell, one block north of Superior Ave.
Worlds of Chess Champions puts chess into context through the lives of chess experts, authors, and champions. This exhibition sets the historical stage of chess champions from the 19th Century to the present. To illustrate the context of chess in the world, the earliest items displayed feature chess pieces from Egypt dating back to 1300 B.C. Other early items on display from the John G. White Chess and Checkers Collection include original manuscripts from the 16th, 17th, and 18th Centuries. Other rare and interesting items include a death mask photograph of an early 19th-century player, commemorative chess stamps, hand-written letters by and about world-famous chess champions, autographed material, and published books by chess champions.
Some of the materials in Worlds of Chess Champions have never before been exhibited. The John G. White Chess and Checkers Collection is the worlds largest and most comprehensive chess collection. The collection contains chess sets and pieces as well as material related to chess. Many stamps commemorating chess champions are in the exhibition. Newspaper and magazine clippings, chess championship programs, score sheets from games, and other rare items will be on display through June 12, 2004.
