The first major tournament of the year is underway. The Corus tournament in Wijk aan Zee has seen its first two rounds. It started with a shock with Kramnik losing the first round but a victory in the second leaves him only half a point from the lead. The Dutch always get an interesting field with a variety of players and this event should be no different, although Morozevich always adds something to an event whether he is in form or not.
Hope you enjoy this issue.
Mark
The Corus Chess Tournament in Wijk aan Zee takes place 9th-25th January 2004. There is yet again a tremendous field for the Category 19 A Group. The main news was the last minute replacement of Alexander Morozevich who has severe flu with Veselin Topalov. The first round saw just one decisive result, Kramnik's surprise loss to Akopian. Kramnik won in round 2 against Van Wely and Leko and Anand lead on 1.5/2.

Sinisa Joksic reports: It was unexpectedly easy for GM Stefan Djuric (48) from Serbia and Montenegro to win the 3rd Interlaken Open. Djuric won first five games and with comfortable two draws in last two rounds, took the first prize.
Decisive was the series from rounds 3-5 when he outplayed Pinter, Rukavina and Ikonnikov.
The great favorite, Vlastimil Hort, from Germany, who reaches 60 on January 12th, suddenly lost in the 2nd round with Rukavina and the 4th with Nelly Vidonyak and his ambitions were ended. In the end he was out of the money prizes.
The top ten got money prizes and all other players got natural prizes. This year Open took place December 26th-30th in the Hotel "Chalet Oberland" with 39 players 6 GMs, 8 IMs.
The organisation was very good, without any problems for players or arbiter Sinisa Joksic. Next year will be the 4th Interlaken Open from December 26th to 30th, 2004.

Support of the Congress was in part through the friends of Hastings International Chess Congress. Here is a press release from them passed on by Stewart Reuben.
We are sure that we can all agree that this years Hastings International Chess Congress justified its status as part of the rich heritage of Britain. It is by far the longest-running international chess congress in the world. People are clamouring to be invited to the Premier, which provided a rich contrast between players from several countries and different backgrounds. The Challengers is another event of which we can be extremely proud and there are a substantial number of events for players of all abilities and ages. Including the one-day junior event, many local people play.
Chess plays an important role in the local community. The congress provides extremely welcome post-Christmas business income for many local companies, particularly those in the leisure industry.
Hastings Council remains the only one in the country that provides substantial support for a chess event. We are deeply grateful for this. Financial aid for 2003-4 was £26,000 and we are well aware there are many calls on their resources. This included £5000 that matched funds raised by the Committee, principally from Eurotunnel sponsorship and the Friends of Hastings International Chess Congress.
This coming year they have announced we will receive £15,000 plus a further £5,000 provided the same amount of new money is found. This might be in the form of: membership of The Friends, donations, philanthropy, provision of necessary skills or equipment, or sponsorship. The latter is the best route. The congress attracts worldwide publicity and it would unquestionably be of commercial benefit to a suitable sponsor to have their name associated with such a prestigious event.
Obviously we are going to find it very difficult to maintain the event at the same level as this year. The Hastings Chess Congress Committee remains committed to the Congress continuing, so that it will be able to celebrate its Second Century in 2095.
There is pressing urgency. We need to know by June what level of income we can expect to receive apart from that from entry fees. Without this knowledge, it will be impossible to plan properly for the 2004-5 Congress, which will commence as usual on 28 December. Please do support this worthy cause.
The tiers of membership of The Friends Scheme are: Friend £25 Supporter £50 Benefactor £100 Vice-President £1000
Chairman Paul Smith Flat 2, 35 Cambridge Road Hastings TN34 1DJ. Cheques should be made payable to Hastings International Chess Congress

Further details on the event http://www.gibraltarchesscongress.com or Tel 00350 76501
Stewart Reuben has sent a current list of invitees to the GibTelecom Masters. He comments: 15 of these are females, including some of the best players in the world. Of course tournaments solely for women, such as the Olympiad, European Women's Championship, Women's World Championship have attracted a much larger and stronger group. My question: In an open event, is this the highest percentage and strongest group of female contestants ever to take part in such an event? The Lloyds Bank Masters used to be very good from this viewpoint, but female chess was weaker 10 years ago and the players there were less strong at the top.

Calle Erlandsson reports: The Ken Whyld Association has been founded in Brunswick, Germany. The British chess historian Ken Whyld was one of the promotors of the chess historical association which was eventually founded after being in the planning for 20 years was founded in Amsterdam in 2002. Whyld died 77 years old on July 11, 2003, and regretfully he never saw the realisation of the society that come to wear his name. KWA was founded on November 21st in Brunswick (Braunschweig), Germany, and has so far 78 members from 22 nations. Jurgen Stigter, Amsterdam, was elected as KWA's first president and Peter Holmgren of Tyresö, Sweden, as deputy chairman. Hans Engberts of Utrecht, The Netherlands, Michael Negele of Wuppertal, Germany and Roger Klittich of Brunswick also were elected as members of the board. Correpondence chess GM Juan Morgado had travelled all the long way from Buenos Aires to participate. He will be the KWA contact person in Latin America.
The excursion to Bibliotheca Augusta - the Duke August library - in the adjacent town Wolfenbüttel gave possibility to watch the first German chess book as well as the manuscript, Gustavus Selenus: Das Schach- oder Köningspiel, printed in 1616. Germany's so-called Golden Book could also be seen with its illuminations from the 12th century. It can be seen at Wolfenbüttel six weeks a year and is the most valuable book in the country. It was bought some years ago for 37 million DM or about 14 million British Pounds.
On the KWAs homepage there are already a lot of information about the association, for example reports from the events in Brunswich and Wolfenbüttel. The annual membership fee for the KWA is EUR 50 and shall be paid from January 2004. If you are interested in joining the KWA you can do this through the homepage.
