1) Introduction

My thanks to Thomas Henrich, Leslie Leow, Dennis van Aken, Miklos Orso, Laszlo Nagy, John Hillery, Emil Anka, Sinsa Drazic, Eugeny Atarov, P.T. Ummer Koya, Santiago Garcia Ramos, Vladimir Dvorkovich, Jonas Eriksson, John Fernandez, Vladica Andrejic, George Mirijanian, Jonathan Rowson, Ivan Sokolov, Calle Erlandsson, Marko Siil, Michael Atkins and everyone else who helped with the issue.

This week's main events are the Santo Domingo International which was won by Vadim Milov and the Indian Championships. The Indian Championships are currently being led by Humpy Koneru who already holds the women's title. Its only an early stage but 16 year old is clearly going to battle out for the title, probably with Surya Shekhar Ganguly (they've already met and drawn) and Pentala Harikrishna (off to a slow start with 2 losses) the other two hopes of Indian chess. The event makes me very nostalgic for the real tournaments of the past. A 23 round all-play-all; that's real chess.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

2) Santo Domingo International

The Santo Domingo International Chess Open (Great Nazir Atallah Cup) took place 27th November - 5th December 2003. 9 players finished on 7.5/10. GM Vadim Milov won the event after making the highest progressive score.

Marjorie Alvarez reports: IM Alejandro Ramírez from Costa Rica. Ramirez, who is 15 years old, completed his third and final GM Norm and obtained the necessary rating points to exceed 2500. This way, Ramirez has become the first Grand Master ever in Central America, the youngest now in America and the second youngest now in the world (just after GM Karjakin). In Dominican Republic Ramirez beated GM Igor Khenkin from Germany, GM Evgeny Alekseev from Russia and drew with GM Alexander Moiseenko from Ukraine, GM Thomas Luther from Germany and GM Hanes Stefansson from Island. Ramirez, who also qualified for the World Championship during the last Zonal 2.3 Tournament, also beated GM Alexander Shabalov during the last Continental Tournament and drew with GM Alexander Morozevich during the last Olympiad in Bled.

Ken Whyld Association Founded

Calle Erlandsson reports: The Ken Whyld Association has been founded in Brunswick, Germany. The British chess historian Ken Whyld was one of the promotors of the chess historical association which was eventually founded after being in the planning for 20 years was founded in Amsterdam in 2002. Whyld died 77 years old on July 11, 2003, and regretfully he never saw the realisation of the society that come to wear his name. KWA was founded on November 21st in Brunswick (Braunschweig), Germany, and has so far 78 members from 22 nations. Jurgen Stigter, Amsterdam, was elected as KWA's first president and Peter Holmgren of Tyresö, Sweden, as deputy chairman. Hans Engberts of Utrecht, The Netherlands, Michael Negele of Wuppertal, Germany and Roger Klittich of Brunswick also were elected as members of the board. Correpondence chess GM Juan Morgado had travelled all the long way from Buenos Aires to participate. He will be the KWA contact person in Latin America.

The excursion to Bibliotheca Augusta - the Duke August library - in the adjacent town Wolfenbüttel gave possibility to watch the first German chess book as well as the manuscript, Gustavus Selenus: Das Schach- oder Köningspiel, printed in 1616. Germany's so-called Golden Book could also be seen with its illuminations from the 12th century. It can be seen at Wolfenbüttel six weeks a year and is the most valuable book in the country. It was bought some years ago for 37 million DM or about 14 million British Pounds.

On the KWAs homepage there are already a lot of information about the association, for example reports from the events in Brunswich and Wolfenbüttel. The annual membership fee for the KWA is EUR 50 and shall be paid from January 2004. If you are interested in joining the KWA you can do this through the homepage.
