The Cap D'Agde tournament has proved an extremely competitive affair in the opening stages with tight groups stages producing a very strong quarter final lineup. Kasparov's visit to the London Chess Centre produced a big crowd and sales of his new book. The World Junior Championships are underway and the FIDE Congress will take place along side it.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

6th National and International Chess Encounters World Rapid Chess Championship organised by CCAS in Cap d'agde 23rd-30th October 2003. CCAS is Caisse Centrale d'Activités Sociales des Electriciens et Gaziers de France (EDF-GDF), the national company for Gas and Electricity.
16 World Class GMs among them 11 of the 12 top rated players will fight for the world crown. Each player will have 25 minutes + 10 seconds per played move. This means games that will last at most between 50 minutes to 1 hour.
After the group stages the top four from each group qualified for the quarter finals of the knockout. Today saw Kramnik - Polgar (Kramnik won 2-0) and Ponomariov - Anand (is taking place as I write - game 1 was drawn). Tuesday sees Bacrot - Grischuk and Topalov - Svidler.
The average rating will be 2726 ELO points, which makes this world rapid chess championship the strongest of all time.

The 4NCL started over the weekend of 18th-19th October 2003.
Part of report from the official site: Division 1 is headed by title-holders Wood Green 1 and Betsson.com, both with 2 wins from the weekend. Betsson.com will be particularly pleased with their round 2 victory over strongly fancied Guildford-ADC 1. A remarkable match saw 8 decisive games, with the top 4 boards won by the black pieces, and a final result of 5-3 in favour of Betsson.com. It was a difficult weekend for some of the Division 1 teams who had players away competing in the European Team Championship in Bulgaria. Slough 1 particularly suffered and are currently at the foot of the table.
My thanks to Richard Furness, Peter Sowray and Arthur Brameld (for the games).

The Worlds of Chess Champions exhibition contains items including Egyptian chess pieces, commemorative stamps, autographed material, rare books and original manuscripts.
The event is in Cleveland OH. The Cleveland Public Librarys John G. White Chess and Checkers Collection is currently exhibiting an installation titled, Worlds of Chess Champions. This temporary exhibition is located in the third floor exhibition hall of the Main Building, 325 Superior Ave., N.E. The Library exhibition is free and open to the public. Paid parking is available on Rockwell, one block north of Superior Ave.
Worlds of Chess Champions puts chess into context through the lives of chess experts, authors, and champions. This exhibition sets the historical stage of chess champions from the 19th Century to the present. To illustrate the context of chess in the world, the earliest items displayed feature chess pieces from Egypt dating back to 1300 B.C. Other early items on display from the John G. White Chess and Checkers Collection include original manuscripts from the 16th, 17th, and 18th Centuries. Other rare and interesting items include a death mask photograph of an early 19th-century player, commemorative chess stamps, hand-written letters by and about world-famous chess champions, autographed material, and published books by chess champions.
Some of the materials in Worlds of Chess Champions have never before been exhibited. The John G. White Chess and Checkers Collection is the worlds largest and most comprehensive chess collection. The collection contains chess sets and pieces as well as material related to chess. Many stamps commemorating chess champions are in the exhibition. Newspaper and magazine clippings, chess championship programs, score sheets from games, and other rare items will be on display through June 12, 2004.
