My thanks to David Llada, Laszlo Nagy and Miklos Orso, Andrejic Vladica, Vlado Soos, John Hillery, Walter Bichsel, Leonid Galperin, Herman and Marius van Riemsdijk, Rodolfo Arias, Geurt Gijssen, Alik Gershon, Andy McFarland, Elie Houlichian, John Fernandez, Antonio Rosino, Rainer Polzin, Mig, Rod McShane, Korpics Zsolt and everyone else who helped with the issue.
The European Team Championships, Essent tournament and 1st Samba Cup are all major tournaments which spoil us this week. Ponomariov's loss in round one (on his 20th birthday) of the European Team Championships amused probably almost everyone except the player himself, it should at least act as a striking reminder to others about the new rule. Anatoly Karpov astonishingly allowed a classic double bishop sacrifice by Judit Polgar in a position which surely should have warned him to be careful. The game is one of those "publishable" games that appear everywhere but to allow it was to me at least as bad an error as Kasparov's loss against Huzman last week.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

Plovdiv in Bulgaria hosts the European team championship October 10th-21st 2003. 37 men's and 31 women's teams are competing. Russia are very clear favorites with Bareev, Svidler, Grischuk, Morozevich and Khalifman are in the Russian team. Shirov plays for Spain, Gelfand for Israel, Topalov for Bulgaria, Van Wely for the Netherlands and Ponomariov for the Ukraine. Round 1 saw Ruslan Ponomariov's 20th birthday and a mortifying incident for him. His mobile phone went off in the middle of a game and under new rules It is not allowed to bring any mobile phone into the playing hall. Violations of this rule will be punished according to art.13.4 of the Laws of Chess by loss of their game.". This rule didn't appear on the official site of the event and many teams didn't receive the rules until after the game. Rather fortunately for Ponomariov he didn't lose too much through this as his position was quite terrible at the point he was disqualified. My thanks to David Llada for some of the details of this incident.

Two all-play-all tournaments have been organised in Alushta, Ukraine. The first which took place 15th-25th September 2003 was won by Tigran Nalbandian with 10/13. A small correction to the results and games from the first tournament given last week, Zavgorodniy-Sumets (10) was a win for white not a draw. A second event took place 27 September - 7th October 2003 which saw Vladimir Rogovski and Yuri Drozdovskij finish on 11/15. My thanks to Leonid Galperin.

Correction from last week. The Hungarian Women's Championships actually took place in Budapest June 21st-29th 2003 not September as I had it (I'm not sure why I didn't get the games and results at the time which is what confused me). Yelena Dembo won the event with a 7.5/9 score half a point clear of Nora Medvegy. My thanks to Korpics Zsolt.
