My thanks to Nigel Short, John Fernandez, Vladica Andrejic, Thomas Henrich, Korpics Zsolt, Karel Novak, Hadi Karimi, Muntean Ciprian, Yin Hao, John Littlewood, David Llada, Jeroen van den Berg, Geurt Gijssen and everyone else who helped with the issue.
We've been spoiled in the few weeks firstly with the Russian Championships and now with the European Club Cup. The undoubted star of the event was Kasparov who started with 4/4 in tremendous style. Kasparov seems only to lose bad games and in round 6 he blundered away his position in a puzzling manner in only 22 moves. However it should be remembered that even with this mistake his result in the event increased his already high rating, moving further away from potential challengers in the rating list. Next week we will see the Essent tournament in the Netherlands and the European Team Championships in Plovdiv start.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

Top seeds NAO Chess Club eventually emerged as the winners (Grischuk, Svidler, Adams, Lautier, Vallejo, Bacrot and Fressinet) ahead of 7th seeds Polonia Plus GSM Warszawa (Ivanchuk, Gelfand etc) and Kiseljak (Azmaiparashvili, Almasi etc). In 5th was Ladya-Kazan-1000 whose fortunes were tied to Kasparov who started in tremendous form with 4/4 before losing to a banal tactic in only 22 moves in round 6. 2nd seeds Bosna Sarajevo (Bareev, Shirov and Sokolov) finished a disappointing 16th with only Shirov gaining rating points. Kasparov gained rating points and was the top Elo performer with 2839 a point clear of Vasily Yemelin who scored 5/5 for a 2838 performance, Akopian, Svidler, Ivanchuk, Macieja, Lautier and Morozevich all performed above 2800. Internet CG Podgorica won the women's event.
The games Volkov-Morozevich rd5 and Morozevich-Berndt (2) don't look right and I am looking for the correct gamescores.

The 12th Monarch Assurance Isle of Man International took place at the Ocean Castle Hotel, Port Erin, Isle of Man, from 27 September - 5 October 2003.
Simen Agdestein took first on tie-break from Smbat Lputian.
Thestrong field was weakened by the withdrawal of Nigel Short who objected to being re-paired in round 1 after his opponent didn't turn up and withdrew.
Short issued a joint press release with Patrick Taylor of Monarch Assurance on 1st October explaining his withdrawal.
It is common ground that:
1. The invitation to Nigel Short to play (which did not involve him completing the Tournament entry form) had not specified that the event was to be played under the British Accelerated Swiss Rules. Most International Swisses are played under FIDE Swiss Rules, which do not permit re-pairing if an opponent fails to appear within an hour of the commencement of the first round;
2. The British Accelerated Swiss Rules which have applied for many years in British Tournaments and do permit such re-pairing were not specifically referred to in the Tournament Entry Form nor were they drawn to his attention before he had handed in his scoresheet recording his win by default in the first round. An extract of the relevant rule was however displayed in the Tournament Hall but this was not observed by Nigel.
The dispute has been resolved by payment to Nigel of his appearance fee and expenses.
An invitation has been extended to him to play in the 2004 event which, in principle, he would wish to accept.
Monarch Assurance will be reviewing the procedures for next years event to ensure there is no there is no recurrence of these problems.

David Llada reports: The Spanish Chess Federation has announced that the Chess Olympiad 2004 will take place October 14th to 1st November in the small city of Calviá, on Mallorca Island, instead of Cala Galdana (Menorca Island), as it was previously announced.
There was even an "official presentation act" in Bled, with the attendance of many autorities from Menorca. However, the same politicians didn't pay the neccesary support to the project, trying to decrease the amount of the promised subsidy, so the Olympiad was even in risk of being canceled. Fortunately, a group of businesmen from Mallorca took their chance and made a proposal to take charge of the Olympiad. "Calviá has saved the Chess Olympiad for the Balear Islands", said Santi Andreu, President of the Balear Chess Federation. "His Major (Carlos Delgado) has made more for this event in two months than Menorca in two years", he added. This change was officially approved yesterday (october 4th) by the FIDE inspector M. Gelfer, who visited Calviá in order to evaluate the new "candidature". The playing hall will be the Casino of Mallorca.
Geurt Gijssen is in Salekhard (Far North) and reports. Salekhard is the only city in the world located on the Arctic Circle (66 degrees 33 minutes latitude). The government of the region has organised a team competiton (4 players: 3 boys and 1 girl). The players must be born after 31st December 1985. 16 teams participate in this tournament: 14 teams from different regions and republics of Russia plus Germany and The Netherlands.
The opening ceremony was attended by a lot of regional and local authorities and the World Champions Karpov and Spassky. There is a chess school in Shalekhard called the Anatoly Karpov Polar Chess School. Salekhard is a very modern city with a lot of excellent facilities, it has 34,000 inhabitants. The main sponsor of the event is the Construction Company "21st Century"
He adds that Salekhard is a very interesting place with a chess school. I was really surprised when I visited this school. I think you will be surprised as well when I tell you that 15 persons have a full time job in this school. It is a school with 9 branches in West Siberia. The school in Salekhard is a two floors building with 6 class rooms, a computer room and a small restaurant. It is really unbelievable. I hope you are able to publish something, because the people in Salekhard are very enthusiastic, but completely unknown in the chess world. The director of the school is IM Alexander Potapov, probably next year GM Potapov, because he has already made two GM norms.
