Without playing a game Kasparov has extended his lead at the top of the October rating list released this week. He will play an exhibition match against Azmaiparashvili in the next couple of days followed by playing in the European Club Cup, can he show some form? The rating list also shows the continued rise of Evgeny Bareev who is now World Number 4. His career was in the doldrums until the end of 2001 or the start of 2002 mostly because he couldn't get top class invitations, I've always liked him as a player and its nice to see his rise. Its also great to see Shirov's return he is back at number 5 in the list now.
Hope you enjoy this issue.
Mark

Bill Townsend reports: The 125th New York State Championship was held August 29 to September 1, in the town of Kerhonkson, NY near the Catskill Mountains. Nearly 200 players competed in the seven sections, with the Open featuring 4 GMs, 4IMs and 5 FMs. This year's championship section was won by GMs Jaan Ehlvest and Ildar Ibragimov with 5-1.
This was Ehlvest's first appearance at the championship, while Ibragimov previously won the tournament in 2001. Unfortunately since neither of these gentlemen were New York State residents the state champion had to be picked out of the players tied for third at 4.4-1.5. New Yorkers all, they were: GM Joel Benjamin, IM Jay Bonin, IM Justin Sarkar, FM Aaron Pixton, and FM Daniel Shapiro.
A five-way tie for the trophy was judged to be too many so the championship was decided by a blitz playoff game between the two players with the best tiebreaks, GM Benjamin and FM Pixton. Black had draw odds, but white had an extra minute. GM Benjamin chose black but lost the game, giving the state title and an extra $100 to 17-year-old Pixton. The first NYSCA championship was run in 1878, making this the longest running tournament in the United States.

Grandmaster Arthur Bisguier of New York won the Abe Yanofsky Memorial in Winnipeg today with a last round win to give him clear first place at 5-1. The six-round Swiss System ran Aug. 29-Sept. 1. Bisguier's career spans more than five decades, and though he's not not as active in tournament chess as he once was, he wanted to play in Winnipeg in honour of his old-time friend, Abe Yanofsky.
Grandmasters Kevin Spraggett, Helgi Olafsson, John Fedorowicz and Dmitry Tyomkin were next at 4.5, along with Master Jason Drake of Minnesota.
It's fitting that one of Yanofsky's long-time friends and colleagues won the event. The two players were four years apart in age and competed in many events together. They were both in the 1962 Stockholm Interzonal, and Arthur recounted how he celebrated with Abe in Tel Aviv in 1964 following Yanofsky's grandmaster title-winning performance.
While his higher-ranked grandmaster colleagues were busy drawing with each other, Bisguier slipped through the middle to snatch first place - especially impressive when the player is in his 70's and still bold enough to challenge opponents young enough to be his great grand-children.
Yanofsky, the first grandmaster in Canada and the British Commonwealth, died three years ago at the age of 74. He won the Canadian championship eight times.
