1) Introduction

My thanks to Herman Claudius van Riemsdijk, Luiz Roberto Da Costa Jr, Mehrdad Pahlevanzadeh, Miklos Orso, Julio Alberto González, Elie Houlichian, Frank Berry, Manfred Brod, Omar Salama, Harald Grafenhofer, Michael Grone Andersson, Jan Mazuch, Thomas Henrich, Toni Ayza, Jeroen van de Weijer, Thomas Hauge Vestergaard, Otto Buchholz, John Fernandez, John Saunders, Cecil Rosner, Joseph Shea and everyone else who helped with the issue.

We could talk about the aftermath of the Kasparov - Ponomariov match, Kramnik's letter which appears in this issue, the new website for the Association of Chess Professionals or the Category 20 tournament in Mumbai which is possibly in the pipeline but for me this week its all been about the Russian Championships. Great games everywhere lots of exciting play. Its been one of the best tournaments in a long time and we're not even half way through!

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

19) Category 20 in Mumbai?

The Indian Press on Tuesday night reported a press conference (http://www.hinduonnet.com/thehindu/holnus/07022012.htm) and http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/cms.dll/html/uncomp/articleshow?msid=161961 announcing a Category 20 tournament in Mumbai in December 2003. They named the top 20 players in the World as players. It soon became clear they had contacted few if any of the players. In a ChessBase article http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=1171 they give the background. The organisers http://www.venuschessacademy.com/ say that they hope the event will be in December, at the same time as the FIDE Championships. December might be the best time due to the weather for a tournament in India but its hardly the best time in the chess calendar with Wijk aan Zee and Linares to follow, in fact almost any other time in the year would be better. Its good to hear of a new tournament but the organisers haven't made a good impression as to their competence (you really don't announce a tournament without players) and perhaps they'd be better with a Category 16 tournament to start with to iron out any problems as they're really much easier to do badly than well even with money (Wijk aan Zee and Linares took years to get as good as they are). The date December 2003 is really too close in time to now to organise such a major event and get the best field. However if they have the money and take their time then they'll get a good field.

21) Kramnik Letter

Moscow, September 8, 2003

World Chess Champion Vladimir Kramnik official announcement

Keeping in mind the current situation in the chess world I consider it important to state my position.

At the present time I am engaged with the preparation for the Classical World Chess Championship match with the official challenger Peter Leko. We came to an agreement concerning all conditions and regulations for our match. Now we are at the final stage of negotiations with the potential sponsor. An official announcement will follow after signing the agreements.

Based on my rights from the contract with Einstein Group PLC I sent a termination document to the company in the beginning of August 2003. The reason for this was the company’s failure to fulfill the main contract obligation – organization of the Classical World Chess Championship match by June 30, 2003. At the moment I do not have any contractual relations either with the Einstein Group or with FIDE. I also did not authorize these organizations to hold negotiations on my behalf. All the announcements concerning my match with Peter Leko in Buenos Aires are far from reality.

I regret that the match between Ruslan Ponomariov (FIDE World Champion) and Gary Kasparov (FIDE challenger), will not take place. All this leads to a halt of the chess world reunion that was initiated by the Prague unity agreement.

I ask all the people who are in charge of the situation to find a reasonable solution and to put maximum effort in order to resolve the crisis.

Let the players play!

Vladimir Kramnik
