1) Introduction

My thanks to David Llada, Hassan Khaled, Ralph Frisch, Dominique Primel, Nathan Resika, Bo Sjögren, Laszlo Nagy, John Fernandez, P. Kokalj, Robert Sporri, Harald Grafenhofer, Thomas Henrich, Gabor Pali, Miklos Orso, Hartmut Metz, Vladimir Talla, Hans Groffen, Emmanuel Variniac, David Cohen, Thierry Foissez, Gerard van Otten, Frederic Friedel, Alexander Martynkov, Jens Scheel, Andreas Brenke, Sandra Thaller, Hugh Brodie, Shivaji Apte, Brian Stephenson, Roberto Alvarez, Alik Gershon, Juan Manuel González, George Mirijanian, Sinisa Joksic and everyone else who helped with the issue.

The result of the week was Viktor Bologan's 2800+ performance to win Dortmund by a clear point. Bologan earned the right to play by winning the Aeroflot open earlier in the year and he was clearly motivated as were Teimour Radjabov and even last placed Arkadij Naiditsch all of whom gained rating points. The stars Vladimir Kramnik, Viswanathan Anand and Peter Leko all lost rating points, the latter a huge number. Notable was the lack of an announcement of a date and venue for the Kramnik - Leko match especially in a week where FIDE and Kasparov's manager Owen Williams seemed to confirm that the Kasparov - Ponomariov match will go ahead. The longer it takes to get sponsorship for Kramnik and Leko the less chance there is for it to go ahead at all especially with both players in form that can be described as lukewarm at best.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

14) Davos Open

The "Swiss Chess Tour 2003" continued in Davos in the 2nd "Sunstar Park Hotel Open", which took place August 2nd- 10th 2003. 9 round Swiss - timerate 40 moves for 2 hours and 60 minutes till the end.

Internet coverage: http://www.beochess.ch/

Sinisa Joksic reports: Unfortunately nice things are short. 2nd Davos Open 2003 lasting from August 2-10. with relatively few players, only 38, but from 12 different nations, had the pleasure to play in excellent conditions, in such beautiful place with wonderful weather (21-26 centigrade), when all Europe had desert temperatures of around 40. Davos is a town with 16,000 inhabitants (without tourists, in the winter season the population grows to four times the size) about 1600 meters above sea level, with fresh, not so humid air. During the summer it is particularly attractive for mountain climbing, walking, jogging and other recreation sports (normally chess players don’t do this so much).

The tournament was nice, and the results was extremely uncertain until the last round. Bjorn Tiller (NOR) was leader until round 8, when he lost with Rafal Antoniewski from Poland. In the last round Severin Papa from Switzerland and Petra Schuurma from Netherland had to win their games to make IM-norms. Both games finished drawn, Petra got the satisfaction of making WGM-norm. (According to new rules IM-norm was 6.5 and WGM-norm 6.0 points.)

Gavin Wall already made results for IM, waiting next FIDE meeting. It is the first time in six years of the Swiss Chess Tour that a winner is from Poland. Also, it’s a first time that GMs were not in the first three. (best GM Lothar Vogt was 4th) There were 8 money prizes, many special, best lady Petra Schuurman (NED), best senior GM Ivan Nemet (SUI), best Swiss and junior Severin Papa, best schoolboy Yasseen Chaudhary (BEL). Sinisa Joksic as arbiter had easy pleasant work. Information and dates for 3rd Davos open will be available soon.

17) Slovenian Championships

The Slovenian Championships took place in Bled 3rd-10th August 2003.

The Surprise winner of the 13th National Chess Championship of Slovenia was 17-year old FM Jure Borisek. The young member of the Slovenian national team produced a win over IM Janez Barle in the last round and had the same number of points as IM Leon Mazi and GM Dusko Pavasovic. However he had better a Bucholz points score and won the Championship. Second was GM Dusko Pavasovic and third was IM Leon Mazi, who had an opportunity to become a champion if he had won in the last round. FM Blaz Bratovic made an IM norm. The Women's Championship was decided already by the 8th round. WIM Jana Krivec confirmed her title win with the draw in the last round. Jana Krivec is a member of the same club as Jure Borisek (SK Nova Gorica). This is her 4th title. Second was WFM Ana Srebrnic and third was WIM Darja Kaps. All three were members of the national team in the last Olympiad and will probably participate in the forthcoming European Team Championships. (Based on a report by P. Kokalj)
