1) Introduction

My thanks to Eirik T. Gullaksen, Andy McFarland, John Fernandez, "Bob", John Henderson, Laszlo Nagy, Gabor Pali, Ian Doyle, Mikhail Golubev, Ching Kim Lye, Miklos Orso, Chris Holmes, Richard Palliser, Thomas Henrich, Ray Keene, Oscar de la Riva, John Langreck, Rod McShane, IA Antonio Bento, Guenther van den Bergh, Stewart Reuben, and everyone else who helped with the issue.

An interesting week. The announcement that the Ukranian President has put his name behind holding the Kasparov - Ponomariov match in the Ukraine is surely a big indication that the match will indeed take place although FIDE have yet to confirm the match so far. The announcement that Kasparov will play Fritz in a match in New York in November suggests the Kasparov thinks that his time-table is being sorted out. Its now time for Kramnik - Leko to be similarly organised. The North Sea Cup saw a three way tie for first between Alexei Dreev and rising stars Luke McShane and Krishnan Sasikiran. McShane has been in great form recently and is clearly improving fast now he has left school and is spending a year playing chess before going to University. The Polgar - Gelfand rapid match seemed to come out of nowhere with no announcement as far as most chess reporters were concerned. Gelfand dominated winning 6-2 and winning 3 of the 4 days of chess. With the summer here there is a huge amount of chess being played in Europe.

Hope you enjoy this issue.

Mark

3) 18th North Sea Cup

The Category XV 18th North Sea Cup took place July 4th-12th 2003. Alexei Dreev, Luke McShane and Krishnan Sasikiran all made 6.5/9.

I've corrected the dates of the games from the first three rounds, I accidently had June instead of July.

4) Ponomariov - Kasparov match set to go ahead

On July 10th the Interfax News Agency reported: "Ukraine's President Leonid Kuchma has signed an order for the organisation of a chess match for the World Title between Ruslan Ponomarev (Ukraine) and Garry Kasparov (Russia) in Yalta in September-October 2003." This story has been around for some time with no official confirmation but clearly the involvement of the Ukranian President makes this very likely to go ahead.

5) Kasparov vs X3D Fritz

According to http://www.chessbase.com Kasparov will take on an X3D version of Fritz in a match in New York in November. Kasparov drew with Deep Junior last year. The site http://www.x3dworld.com will again be promoting the event. Kasparov has played high profile matches against Karpov and Junior for the company before.

6) Swedish Championships

The Swedish Championships took place June 29th - July 12th 2003 in Umea, Sweden. The event was a 13 round Category IX. Rylander and Von Bahr withdrew from the tournament due to illness I have now removed their results from the standings. Evgenij Agrest won with a score on 7.5/11.

7) Norwegian Championships

The Norwegian Championships took place 5th-12th July 2003 in Fredrikstad.

Eirik T. Gullaksen reports: Before the final round of the Norwegian Championships five players had a chance for the gold medal. One of them was 12 year old FM Magnus Carlsen. However, only IM (GM elect) Berge Østenstad managed to win his final game and so took his 6th Norwegian Title. GM Rune Djurhuus was second and Torbjørn Ringdal Hansen third.

Torbjørn Ringdal Hansen, Øystein Dannevig and Flemming Christenson all made IM-norms.

FM Jøran Jansson won the Master class ahead of Lars Breivik while Kjetil Stokke won the juniors. These three qualify for the championship group in 2004.

9) Smith & Williamson Young Masters

The 13th Smith & Williamson Young Masters takes place at Millfield School, Somerset 9th-17th July. GM Evgeny Prokopchuk plays, he faces tough competition from last year's winners Eddie Dearing and IM Karl Mah, as well as from the Hungarian IMs Gergely Antal and Gabor Pinter. England's FM Craig Hanley and the rapidly improving FM Stewart Haslinger may well also challenge for first, whilst FMs Gawain Jones, Thomas Dvorak and Stanislav Jasny along with Lawrence Trent will all be chasing IM norms.

13) 26th Open del Vallès

Herman van Riemsdijk reports: The 26th edition of the Open del Vallès was held in Barberà del Vallès, Catalunya, from July 6th-13th 2003. 42 players from 9 countries played the main group. I had played this nice tournament already 4 times but in this edition I was asked by the organizers to be the arbiter instead. At the end first prize went to GM Moskalenko, after the progressive tie-break system had be counted after the last round. Argentinian Marcelo Panelo made an IM norm.

16) Irish Championships

The Irish Championships took place in Dublin 5th-13th July 2003.

Ian Doyle reports: The 2003 Irish Championships was won by Stephen Brady on an impressive 8/9. This is his fourth Irish title [91-92-01 being the others] and his 2nd in three years. Leading from an early stage he was rarely in trouble and aside from draws with the number one and two seeds he won all his games with a good combination of experience and determination. He was a popular and most deserved winner too as he is one of the most active players in Ireland. He now has an automatic place on the Irish Olympiad team in 2004, but it remains to be seen if he accepts this place. He declined such an offer in 2002 and has preferred to play in other international events instead, narrowly missing an IM norm earlier this year in an open in Italy.

A number of games are available.

29) South African Open and World Amateur

The 2003 FIDE World Amateur Chess Championships took place in Tswane (used to be called Pretoria), South Africa from 2nd-13th July 2003. Alongside is the SA Open Chess Championship 4th-12th July 2003. I only have the penultimate round standings however there is a report from Stewart Reuben. Games unavailable.

Report: The World Amateur Chess Championship took place at The Saint George Hotel, Tswane in South Africa 2-12 July 2003. The big news is that 11 year old DALEEN WIID (of Pretoria in Tswane) won the Women's Wotld Amateur Chess Championship with the score of 4.5/9. She is aged 11 years, 8 months at 5 days. We believe she is the youngest-ever person to win a World Championship open to adult players in any sporting discipline. Stewart Reuben, Chairman of the World Chess Federation Organizers Committee said today, "This is a truly wonderful result and bodes well for the future of South African chess." Daleen is a pupil at Constantia Park Primary School in Pretoria. She won her title in the event which is open to both males and females. The overall winner was Shabier Bhawoodien (Johannesburg) who made the remarkable score of 8/9. 123 players competed in this event which was started in England in 1995. There, the largest entry has been 70 people. This is certainly the first time African players have ever won World Chess Championship titles.

The center of the city is full of music (folk, jazz, rock....), (street)theatre and culture and most events are completely free! Most events take place during the evenings and nights, when the chess games are finished. One warning when you intent to win a prize: Belgian beer is rather strong....
