My thanks to Andy McFarland, Rod McShane, John Fernandez, Rodolfo Arias, Misha Savinov, Dmitry Borisenkov, Laszlo Nagy, Gabor Pali, Vladimir Dvorkovich, Zeljko Kartal, Robero Parodi, Mikhail Golubev, Mihajlo Savic, Mig Greengard, Diego Redondo, Jon Speelman, Sead Bicevic and everyone else who helped with the issue.
Youth dominates matters this week. The World Juniors heads towards its final lap. Not perhaps as strong as in some years it nevertheless is the premier event for young players. 19 year old Luke McShane has started with 6/6 in Greenland's first major tournament. 16 year old Daniel Stellwagen has started with a perfect 4/4 in the Dutch Championships although he still has to meet the favourites for the event. 12 year olds David Howell and Sergey Karjakin played a high profile exhibition match in London. Finally news in the UK of a 7 year old studying at home so he can find the time to play more chess. Whether there will be a future in professional chess for a new generation is open to question as many are facing the financial squeeze. A solution to the unification of the World Titles is clearly an absolute necessity. Yalta in September has been suggested as a venue for the Ponomariov vs. Kasparov match. However there are problems such as Ponomariov saying he wants FIDE to pay $150.000 USD because of expenses incurred in preparing for the cancelled match in Argentina. The talk of Yalta has been around for some time now and surely confirmation will follow soon or it won't happen.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The World Junior Championships (under 20) take place June 21st - July 3rd 2003 in Nakhichevan, Azerbaijan. Participants from 29 countries. In the 13 round boys section there are 50 participants: 7- GM, 13 - IM. In the 11 round girl's section 28 participants: 2 - WGM, 2 - WIM. Info Vladimir Dvorkovich.
I'm in a little confusion about Alexander Zubov. I believe it to be the Ukranian IM but there is a chance it could be a similarly aged and rated Oleksander (given name on the official site in the games section, they give the IM in the standings).

The game which was played on a giant chess set ended in a draw. This was the second good result in a couple of days for Howell. He beat Jon Speelman on the 26th June in the British Land Match also on a giant board.

7 year old Peter Williams of Alton in Hampshire has been taken out of school and will be educated at home by his parents after a row about having time off school to pursue his chess. Williams has had some good results in Minors already and is regarded as being one of the best juniors of his age to emerge. I always feel uncomfortable about highlighting or heaping expectation on players at this age but it is normal in other sports such as golf and tennis to start specialising at this age incorporating it into their education although perhaps not in the UK.

Harry Cattoir KGSRL (Koninklijke Gentse Schaakkring Ruy Lopez) writes: This successful tournament with around 8.000 prize money is unique because of the combination with the yearly "Fiesta" in the City of Ghent . The center of the city is full of music (folk, jazz, rock....), (street)theatre and culture and most events are completely free! Most events take place during the evenings and nights, when the chess games are finished. One warning when you intent to win a prize: Belgian beer is rather strong....

Sergei Karjakin, the youngest Grandmaster in chess history, will fly to London from the Ukraine to play an Exhibition Tournament with 12 year old David Howell from Eastbourne, on Saturday 28 June 2003 to celebrate the opening of The Art of Chess at the Gilbert Collection. This exhibition match, using giant chess pieces, will take place at 11am in the Edmond J Safra Courtyard of Somerset House, Strand, London WC2.
The Art of Chess will feature nineteen chess sets designed by artists in the last hundred years that demonstrate the interaction between chess and modern art. Each set illustrates a move in the apocryphal last game played by Napoleon with General Bertrand on St Helena in 1820. In the starting position is the world's only known set designed by Carl Fabergé, specially made circa 1905 for Tsar Nicolas II's Commander in Chief of the Russo-Japanese War, General Alexei Kouropatkin. Visitors can then follow the game through the porcelain designs of the Lomonosov State Porcelain Factory in Russia in the 1920s - the 'Propaganda' chess set with Capitalists versus Communists - to Marcel Duchamp's Buenos Aires chess set of 1919, and the geometric designs of the Bauhaus set by Josef Hartwig. There is also a set created by leading Fluxist artist Yoko Ono, as well as five especially commissioned new designs by Damien Hirst, Yayoi Kusama, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Paul McCarthy and Maurizio Cattelan, the latter being laid out as the final move - checkmate.
