The European Championships were won by Zurab Azmaiparashvili in one of the best results of his career. Whether this event will be remembered as the founding of a long term chess union or not remains to be seen. The Enghien-les-Bains tournament has got off to a lively start a reward for the organisers for choosing a very intriguing field.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The European Championships took place May 30th - June 14th 2003 in Silivri, Turkey. Zurab Azmaiparashvili won the men's event alone on 9.5/13. 207 players competed in this huge event. There were playoffs for Bronze-Silver won by Vladimir Malakhov 1.5-0.5 against Alexander Graf (timerate 15m + 10s). WC Qualification playoffs were not played, they were supposed to be Alexei Fedorov vs. Ernesto Inarkiev and Sergei Tiviakov vs. Andrei Istratescu but the players felt that all 32 players tied on 8 points should be involved. With the uncertainty over the World Championships this probably wasn't a priority, with most there for a piece of the $192,000 prize money. There was a women's Championship playoff won by Pia Cramling who won 1.5-0.5 against Viktorija Cmilyte. There was a series of playoffs for the Bronze Medal. Rd1 Marie Sebag (to progress to rd2) 2-0 Monika Socko. Rd2 Tatiana Kosintseva 1.5-0.5 Marie Sebag.
Qualification places: Natalija Pogonina 2.5-1.5 Regina Pokorna. Natalija Pogonina 2-0 Inna Gaponenko. Joanna Dworakowska 3-1 Maria Velcheva. Sopio Tkeshelashvili 1.5-0.5 Alina Motoc. Svetlana Petrenko 1.5-0.5 Olga Alexandrova
I'm still unsure about the result round 5 women WIM Andreea Sasu-Ducsoara vs. Serap Keskin it was given as a draw in the games section but a win for Sasu-Ducsoara in the results.
My thanks to Lubomir Ftacnik who corrected a significant number of games from the scoresheets from rounds 1-8 which is why they appear in the games section again. There was only one substantial correction from the women's event which is presented.
A number of letters have been exchanged between the players and the organisers over expenses and prize money, this has led to the formations of a nascent players union. Links to the letters on the TWIC site. Reply to open letter by Ali Nihat Yazici President of Turkish Chess Federation, Formation of Chess Union and Open Letter on Conditions for the European Championships and Igor Glek on a Chess Union: On the anniversary of the Prague agreements.

John Donaldson reports GM Jaan Ehlvest of Estonia took clear first place in the CCA International with an unbeaten 7.5 points out of 10. Ehlvest has placed first in all three of the CCA Internationals at Stratton Mountain, tying with GM Victor Bologan in 1999 and with GM Pavel Blatny in 2000.
IM John Donaldson earned his second GM norm, beating IM Nikolay Andrianov in the final round. FM Emory Tate defeated Viktors Pupols in the last round to earn his second IM norm. Tate had an odd tournament, starting out with 3-1 vs. two GMs and two IMs but scoring only one point out of his next five games. FM Robby Adamson had already achieved his first IM norm in round 9 and chose not to play the last round, even though under FIDE rules his norm would not have been in jeopardy.
The tournament was directed by Bill Goichberg and Dana Belcher. Next year's CCA International is planned for Stratton Mountain at about the same time, beginning June 3 or June 4, 2004. (This comes from the CCA website)

Sergei Karjakin, the youngest Grandmaster in chess history, will fly to London from the Ukraine to play an Exhibition Tournament with 12 year old David Howell from Eastbourne, on Saturday 28 June 2003 to celebrate the opening of The Art of Chess at the Gilbert Collection. This exhibition match, using giant chess pieces, will take place at 11am in the Edmond J Safra Courtyard of Somerset House, Strand, London WC2.
The Art of Chess will feature nineteen chess sets designed by artists in the last hundred years that demonstrate the interaction between chess and modern art. Each set illustrates a move in the apocryphal last game played by Napoleon with General Bertrand on St Helena in 1820. In the starting position is the world's only known set designed by Carl Fabergé, specially made circa 1905 for Tsar Nicolas II's Commander in Chief of the Russo-Japanese War, General Alexei Kouropatkin. Visitors can then follow the game through the porcelain designs of the Lomonosov State Porcelain Factory in Russia in the 1920s - the 'Propaganda' chess set with Capitalists versus Communists - to Marcel Duchamp's Buenos Aires chess set of 1919, and the geometric designs of the Bauhaus set by Josef Hartwig. There is also a set created by leading Fluxist artist Yoko Ono, as well as five especially commissioned new designs by Damien Hirst, Yayoi Kusama, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Paul McCarthy and Maurizio Cattelan, the latter being laid out as the final move - checkmate.
