The statement of Einstein TV saying that they cannot deliver a Kramnik - Leko will, I believe, put them in breach of their contract with the players. Taken along with the problems FIDE have with the Kasparov - Ponomariov match in Buenos Aires perhaps this is time for a rethink. I see no reason why a 4 player 6 cycle (18 games each) match tournament would not be a perfect way to reunify the title. In addition this may prove to be the most commercially attractive option.
Hope you enjoy this issue.

The 53rd Russian Women's Championships take place 18th-28th May 2003 in Elista. Irina Slavina leads on 6/8. I'm a bit unsure about the name Elena Zaiatz. The official site has Elena Zajas but she was born in 1930 and isn't a WGM, also the PGN section gives the name as Elena Zayac which is the alternate spelling of Zaiatz.

Jürgen Brustkern reports on the oldest traditional Round robin tournament in Hungary. 24 Players from 6 countrys are playing in the GM (Kat 8) and IM (Kat 3 ) Events. This tournament is dedicated to the Chess Problem Composer and former Olympiad team member Gzöszo Elekes, he was also the former leader of the Budapest statistics office. After his death Chess-Club "Statistika" organised this event with support from the goverment. My thanks to GM Emil Anka, who prepares the the tournament schedule.

Stephen Wright reports: The 28th Paul Keres Memorial tournament was held May 16th-19th in Vancouver, Canada. For the third year in a row the Paul Keres Memorial was held at the Plaza 500 hotel. A total of 101 players competed. The Open section was dominated by visitors: three-time Brazilian champion IM Herman C. van Riemsdijk and Oregon junior Morgan Griffiths both scored 5.5/7. This would have been enough to win the event last year, but unfortunately for them they were relegated to sharing second place by a white-hot Georgi Orlov, took first with 7/7. This is the first time in the history of the Keres that anyone has won the Open section with a perfect score; this win also means that Orlov has won the Keres five times, thus tying with fellow IM John Donaldson for the most first prizes.

Obituary of Milan Vukcevich by David Presser and John Donaldson. The games section includes 22 unpulished Vukcevich games from the National Chess League (phone league).
MILAN VUKCEVICH 1937-2003
Milan Vukcevich passed away on May 10, 2003 in Cleveland, Ohio (USA).
Milan was born in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, on March 11, 1937. He was Yugoslav Junior Champion in 1955 and drew a match with Bent Larsen 3--3 that year. He played on the Yugoslav Olympic team (he always loved relating that he was thrown off the team after losing to Petrosian.) in 1960. That same year he had the second best overall result in the Student Olympiad in Leningrad, leading Yugoslavia to the bronze medal. He also won special prizes in this event for best game (Tringov) and best endgame (Drimer) .
Milan chose science over chess as a career and in 1963 enrolled at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Boston, USA), one of the most prestigious universities in the world. After earning a doctorate in metallurgy he taught at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland for six years. When the university pressured him to engage in research not congenial to his nature, Milan refused and left to work in industry, primarily at the General Electric Company in Cleveland.
Milan was equal first with Benko and R. Byrne at the 1969 US Open. In the 1975 US closed championship he defeated Reshevsky and finished clear third. In the US National Telephone League he performed exceptionally well. In 1976 he led Cleveland to a third place finish, tying with GM Kavalek for best result on board one.
GM Kavalek in a 1973 interview opined that Vukcevich, had he chosen to pursue chess professionally, possessed all the qualities to eventually become one of the worldâ??s top thirty. His chess style was characterized by extensive and original opening knowledge, the ability to calculate deeply and accurately, and a penchant for problem-like solutions (exemplified by his stunning â?¦ Ng3!! against Shamkovich).
Milan hardly played during the last twenty years, preferring to compose chess problems, and held the rare title of FIDE International Grandmaster of Chess Composition. In his book "Milan on Chess" he mentions having come to prefer the noncompetitive world of composition to that of tournament chess. He has written another book containing all of his chess problems, and has also authored two books on science.
Dear Mr. YAZICI,
I was glad to read your very substantial answer.
First of all I expected from Turkish Chess Federation an explanation of some technical and organizing problems. But I am sure, your information, Mr. President, and your point of view on the questions of great interest are very useful for my colleagues and me personally. Really, at the moment Turkish Chess Federation is the most active chess organization in Europe. Sure, chess players appreciate at its true value a valuable contribution to development of Chess that TCF has made under your leadership.
Nevertheless I would like to touch on some questions.
Marine Princess Hotel as to description is really a luxury hotel. And your wish, Mr. President, to carry out so a responsible event with an appropriate comfort deserves only compliments. If participants have an opportunity to choose themselves a hotel, majority of them, for sure, would prefer hotel, you offered.
But in this case the others players, for whom staying in the luxury hotel is unsuitable, could also take part in the event. Thus the number of participants would be highly more.
I understand, that to organise and realise so a great event is not simply. I wish all your team the best of luck!
There are more then 210 Grandmasters among participants, but only 12-20 winners of Men Championship and 6-10 of Women will get prizes adequate their efforts. This is the main problem.
You are absolutely right, Mr. President, that the most questions of principle related to modus, schedule and World Championship are in competent authority of ECU and FIDE.
I have also received answer from General Secretary of ECU. Mr. Metzing informed, that modus and schedule of European Championship (incl. rights of organisers to demand staying in the certain hotel) are adopted unanimously by all European National Federations.
My deep belief, Mr. President, that only close co-operation of organisers, FIDE, continental and national Federations from on side and chess professionals from other side could help to solve actual problems for the good of development and prosperity of Chess. Best wishes, GM Igor Glek 20th May 2003
Statement on World Classical Chess Championship 26th May 2003
We have been unable to secure full sponsorship to cover all the prize fund for the World Classical Chess Championship. A significant number of potential title sponsors have expressed considerable interest, but despite positive negotiations, the amounts to be raised in the time scale have proved impossible.
Our team had discussed this match with various locations, most recently with the Government of Hungary, which generously offered to pay for the organisation of the match. Clearly, the original venues with which we had been linked in the Middle East were not viable because of the impending conflict in Iraq.
Combined with underlying international economic anxieties, the Iraqi war effectively undermined global commercial confidence to the point that no potential sponsor was willing to commit sufficient funds towards this match for us to feel secure in proceeding. Such sponsorship as was committed was not sufficient to cover the agreed prize fund. We think it is important to note that all organisations are having major problems securing external sponsorship for a world championship match and sports sponsorship in general is going through a difficult phase.
While this is obviously very disappointing, we remain determined to deliver high quality world championship chess events and are now in discussion with a group of parties who are all interested in participating in a significant new chess development that would lead to the playing of the World Classical Chess Championship match later this year as well as other new events and matches in our cycle.
Given the current global economic climate and its associated uncertainties, we believe that everyone involved in the world of chess should work together towards a common goal of establishing firm and lasting foundations for a commercially viable series of world championship chess events.
This must involve commercial partners, chess organisations and most importantly, the players and their representatives.
We remain committed to the future of World Classical Championship Chess and look forward to helping establish a more secure base for everyone involved.

Sergei Karjakin, the youngest Grandmaster in chess history, will fly to London from the Ukraine to play an Exhibition Tournament with 12 year old David Howell from Eastbourne, on Saturday 28 June 2003 to celebrate the opening of The Art of Chess at the Gilbert Collection. This exhibition match, using giant chess pieces, will take place at 11am in the Edmond J Safra Courtyard of Somerset House, Strand, London WC2.
The Art of Chess will feature nineteen chess sets designed by artists in the last hundred years that demonstrate the interaction between chess and modern art. Each set illustrates a move in the apocryphal last game played by Napoleon with General Bertrand on St Helena in 1820. In the starting position is the world's only known set designed by Carl Fabergé, specially made circa 1905 for Tsar Nicolas II's Commander in Chief of the Russo-Japanese War, General Alexei Kouropatkin. Visitors can then follow the game through the porcelain designs of the Lomonosov State Porcelain Factory in Russia in the 1920s - the 'Propaganda' chess set with Capitalists versus Communists - to Marcel Duchamp's Buenos Aires chess set of 1919, and the geometric designs of the Bauhaus set by Josef Hartwig. There is also a set created by leading Fluxist artist Yoko Ono, as well as five especially commissioned new designs by Damien Hirst, Yayoi Kusama, Jake and Dinos Chapman, Paul McCarthy and Maurizio Cattelan, the latter being laid out as the final move - checkmate.
